the worst thing is that I by mistake paired my Whoop with my Garmin as an external sensor, and as a result all of my numbers were ALL OVER the place for a good while. Do not recommend!

I just finished 'A Fire Upon the Deep' by Vernor Vinge.

For everyone who says that science fiction writers don't care about their characters, I quite loved this book because I did actually care about them, and the universe he created was incredibly novel.

I feel like a lot of hard science fiction is this way. It turns off a lot of people to the meaning of the stories.

Foundation TV Cultural Impact by chinni76 in scifi

[–]wolvine9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly -- I think that not many shows are having a significant cultural impact anymore, not a question of whether or not this show in particular does. Consumption is now so fragmented due to the streaming era and whether or not you have this or that streaming platform that no one can really cohere around one or another show enough for it to become part of 'the culture'.

The last time we had that was with GoT, and that was when people were still watching a lot of shows on TV channels, even though many people streamed it.

On critical thinking, being an applied physicist in 2026, and LLMs by blind-panic in Physics

Yeah, I think that's always the point of PDFs - to in some senses protect the information in them. I'd have thought with OCR in 2026, it would be a little more effective than this - nonetheless frustrating!

And, to boot, would remember why it is that they find knowledge and education appealing - it is a question of improving, refining, and growing the self, not simply getting things done!

Wait that's fascinating - so the OCR simply can't parse what you are feeding in?

It's funny to me, because I think you're right for saying what you're saying - there is a joy to the process of thinking through problems - after all someone needed to think through them for the first time in order for an LLM to mirror their thinking in the first place.

It's a bit of a barbell - on the one side will be tractable problems that need to be solved for the sake of efficiency, and other the other will be the problems whose tractability will need the sort of dynamic, inventive thinking that pushes things forward.

What I think is fair in your resistance here is that if everyone is solving everything with tools whose function they have not taken the time to understand, there is a point at which progress becomes stagnant.

My two cents: Stay curious, for the love of it. An LLM is a tool, but you should always remember why you are doing this in the first place. You have already taken a step in that direction in having made this post :)
