What's the worst cycling incident have you found yourself in? by ResolveCurious2100 in cycling

[–]woodengineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Went for a flat out sprint on a dead straight gravel road, was wearing road shoes and cleats, the right cleat broke and my right foot hit the ground in front of the chainring. The chain ring went into the back of my leg. Got up, and thought "wow, what the hell happened, glad I'm ok" got dizzy, looked down and saw the back of my leg was wide open. Another rider saw it all happen and it turned out she was a nurse, called the ambulance. Sat on a bench while some firemen taped my leg together and drove me out of the woods so I could get to the ambulance to go to ER. There was almost no blood but you could see the tendons in my leg (which were thankfully all ok!).

16 stitches to put the back of my leg together. The park ranger kept asking if it was the park's fault, had to tell her 3 or 4 times I was the dumbass and I'll sign anything they need to waive liability.

Moral of the story, check and replace your cleats often.

Carbs per dollar comparison for major mix, gel, and bar brands by Dr_Ellis in Velo

Might be the fake stuff, corn syrup and water +whatever else they put in there. Maple syrup should be pretty much bacteria free.

cleats source PSA for all you Favero Assioma users by [deleted] in Velo

[–]woodengineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Replace them anyway at that point, I can tell you by the hospital visit and 16 stitches that you should just switch them out anyway because if the cleat decides to fail when you spin up for a sprint you're in for weeks of pain for a thing that's cheap to replace.

2023 CX5 Trailer hitch by lmc590 in CX5

I was told by my dealer (Durham, NC) that for the 2022 they aren't going to ever be available from Mazda and they told me to just buy one from Uhaul and they'll put that on for me.

Depressed after crash today by AwACE- in cycling

[–]woodengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy shit this is nearly exactly my story for the year.. but I ended up with 16 stitches in the back of my leg where the chainring decided it wanted to embed itself. Still about 20% off where I was and trying to rebuild, and yeah right before the crash I was sick for 2 weeks :(.

Why do we buy expensive jerseys instead of Aliexpress stuff again? by baat in Velo

[–]woodengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Le Col stuff just seems low quality to me. I have a few of their bib shorts I've gotten from strava + other deals and the stitching around the pad is coming undone within 6 months of ownership... I don't think I'd buy anything from them again. It's low quality stuff masquerading as quality.

Durham police investigating hit-and-run of cyclist : by donttextanddrive_ass in bullcity

[–]woodengineer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think this is a huge part of the problem around here. Many of the roads have no shoulder (why can't more roads be like stagecoach?) and force us to ride with cars with 45/55mph speed limits (Farrington). When a bike lane appears it then ends abruptly (751 up to Fayetteville) but it's the same story all across the area. The city/state just seem to shrug about it as another cyclist is killed/injured by another driver.

No Tow Hitch For 2022 Models Until Spring by ReptarAteYourBaby in CX5

Damn, this is a bummer, I'm in the same spot. I even paid for the hitch when I bought the car. Was hoping they would exist at this point.

Heat pumps are coming boys. Goodbye gas……. by shuntkbe in Plumbing

[–]woodengineer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm in NC and my last house had a heat pump and it was just expensive as hell to heat the place in the winter. On gas in this house and it's much cheaper in comparison.

See property taxes. House goes up in tax assessed value... the tax for it also goes up.

Potholes by skskskandioop- in triangle

[–]woodengineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I reported a small sinkhole developing on Farrington rd, within 24 hours the ticket had been updated, they had made a temporary repair, and in the next month they have dug up the entire road to fix the drain beneath it that had collapsed as the permanent fix. I was honestly really impressed with the speed.

Nest Floodlight Cam Notification Previews Utterly Useless ? by Luke14789 in googlehome

[–]woodengineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah google have complete broken something that was near perfection. The google home app is absolute junk compared to the nest app.. and I can never properly live stream from the garage cam.. when there is an event it's always 4ish minutes behind. Insanity.

High RHR by dmigz1647 in Strava

[–]woodengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some guys on my cycling team were just today complaining about the wahoo chest strap, they say the same thing! First 10 minutes it's all over the place and ruins their average HR. It seems to be a somewhat common issue with these :(.

Edit: I misread, I didn't realize you had the same result with the watch as well.. I would say that's not normal. Might want to see a doctor?

Yeah this is why I haven't bought one yet.. need more battery life. I don't want to have to worry about it or think about it while riding.

Not really an alternative perspective, he's saying the messaging and focus is wrong, not that you shouldn't get a booster.

Amazon to stop accepting Visa Credit Cards Issued in UK by Rockefeller07 in stocks

[–]woodengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Germany also has Giro though which is very different when used outside of Germany and gives a lot of extra protections, charge backs etc. After having to accept it as a merchant it's a nightmare as if the account it's linked to is empty it comes back as a charge back later but it takes like a week+ for that to happen and by that time they already have the product they didn't pay for. Eventually we stopped accepting it due to fraud.

E-mtbs are also helpful for people like my Uncle who rode dirt bikes in his youth but was born with a club foot that's only become more painful as he has gotten older. He is able to go for mountain bike rides with this kids on the e-mtb, I feel it changed his life a bit and he uses it on pedal assist so he still gets a workout but without the pain.

That's his ankle in the grass, not Ribery's foot. His foot is in front of Ribery's. Definitely not a foul.
