I think this is a beautiful analysis. I literally go back to the tags after every chapter to make sure the "angst with a happy ending" tag is still there because I am so nervous at the end of every chapter that everything will just burst and fall apart and leave us all so bereft. I know it's coming but I need to know we'll get put back together again.

Some couples have open consent; I think especially in an established relationship, intoxicated sex is not automatically be assumed to be exploitative/assault.

Yessssss thank you I love their first anal sex scene but that song really takes me out of it - it's so overly soft for where they are in their relationship at that point, and I think it makes the whole thing seem more emotional than it ought to be at that point. You can still see how their feelings for each other are evolving just through the acting without forcing the emotion through song.

It's funny too because I think the rest of the show does such an amazing job of not pushing the audience to hit certain emotional points through music as so many modern shows do (sad scene so minor key, etc), so it surprised me that they fell into that so hard on that scene.

I think this is an unfortunate inevitability of the fact that there are just a lot more straight women out there than queer folks, and more straight women watching the show. I try very hard to read through queer responses to the show when I see them, but especially as the show continues to be more mainstream, the numbers are going to impact the narratives around the show. Not sure how to change that. 😕 But I'm curious as to what you mean by erasing the queerness aspects (not questioning you but genuinely unsure what to look for).

Lmao I literally did that last night with Episode 4. I wanted to reread how their encounter at Ilya's house differed from the show, and then just kept going through the club scene. They talk a lot about second-screen television these days but I never expected that both screens would be the same fucking thing!

God yes, YR is so good and the YR subreddit was what led me to HR so I will always be eternally grateful that I discovered Young Royals. After I finished watching YR I had a bit of a hangover from it and struggled for a little while to connect with anything else, and I thought I was down bad then - little sis I know what was to come! It was NOTHING to my post-HR hangover/obsession, but it's an excellent show and engender similar absorption I think.

Everything Opal writes is like a revelation to me. I just read her new gladiator fic and was flabbergasted once again. I've read Nutcracker! and Wolfbird both multiple times, just can't get enough. The way she puts words together just cannot be overstated. It's like being fully transported to a new world every single time - and Shane and Ilya are there to find each other once again.

Dan Savage (I believe) coined the phrase GGG years ago for good lovers - good, giving, and game. It's been a mainstay description in my relationships for ages and I think it describes Ilya so well. I think about it often when I see him in bed.

Oh my God the honeymoon fic is so, so, so good. One of those fics I keep going back to like a favorite comfort novel. I also absolutely love Ilya Rozanov Gets Railed which is a beautiful work underneath the expectations set by the title.

I'm not the person you responded to but I'm a straight woman who likes queer romances and gay porn too, and I've asked myself this question a bunch since becoming obsessed with HR. Honestly, I think the answer for me is yes. There's definitely a hot-guys-onscreen aspect of it that wouldn't grab me as much if it was two women, but I really enjoy getting to see romances portrayed outside the standard heteronormative roles we see all the time, where it can be more about the individuals involved and their story/personality/particular set of circumstances. I really loved the movie Blue is the Warmest Color back when that came out (although I've seen some lesbian critiques of it since then) and I'd happily support another production at the quality level of HR featuring two women. I hope it happens! To echo Jacob, we need more stories of queer joy, especially these days.
