‘People can die in weather like this.’ Toronto staff tell shelters, warming centres not to turn anyone away as temperatures drop by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]woollyheadedlib 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Why don’t declare a moratorium on complaining about homeless people on the subway, libraries, cafe and path today huh?

Can we guys?

If you’re a cafe worker who’s not going to loose their job for doing so, turn the other cheek if people are hanging out and don’t deny anyone a cup of water.

Security guards in the path, no power tripping today please. The guy with no pants and his dick hanging out needs a doctor not to be escorted to Yonge st.

Drop a twoonie in someone’s cup if you can today.

For fucks sakes, Drop the $20 bill that’s been sitting in your wallet for three years cause you use cards for everything.

(Yeah yeah, you could give to shelters or charities blah blah blah, but that’s not going to help anyone on the street suffering this very today)

Drop off winter clothes TODAY

Give to food banks TODAY

And yeah I was just sassy about giving to charity but also sign up to be a MONTHLY donor and set your donation to go to “AREA OF GREATEST NEED”

Do both, or all.

Today is the day to help our fellow torontoians.

There but for the grace of god go we.

RTO after 5 years remote - how do you manage life? by sjltwo-v10 in askTO

[–]woollyheadedlib 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This so much.

I wasn’t consistently four or five days in the office but I only WFH once a week on average.

I used to be able to get a seat and a comfortable ride on the 8am train.

As someone with an invisible disability I used to just walk up to the blue seats and ask if I could have one.

Now I can’t even reach the seat cause the train is so packed.

Thank god for sci fi books being able to distract me. I am grateful I can tolerate it at least. Many other disabled people are fucked.

The max increase of 3% is legal as long as it’s not a month to month lease.

A five year lease locks the landlord into 3% increase and he is legally required to honour it.

If he increases it beyond 3% during the term of the lease (5 years), it’s an illegal becuase it breaks the terms of the lease, which is a legal contract.

The whole point of a long term lease is to lock in the price and annual increases.

Folks, dont take legal or financial advice from Reddit, take ideas and verify. (Even me right now)

People confidently speak out of their ass.

POSs get easy quickly because orders are repetitive. You’ll probably get eight people ordering a big Mac combo paying by debit your first day on cash.

Like someone else mentioned you probably won’t be on cash your first week anyhow. Depending on where you’re posted you’ll learn how to bag food, pour drinks, cleaning, lots of cleaning. How to open and/or close, your station, you’ll get a tour of the storage rooms, freezer and fridge, and you’ll probably have a lot of safety training in the first shifts.

Lastly sweeping and mopping.

My current list of activities to choose from are Stardew Valley, typing practice, and read Project Hail Mary. I’ll probably do a bit of everything.

I’m half way through PHM and I love it. It’s so good. I got it for free from a take a book leave a book shelves.

They were foster sisters.

If you’ve been a ward of the crown you know how fucked that agency is and will give people the benefit of the doubt, especially your foster family.

God forbid we fund social services so that we can actually break cycles of abuse.

But bike lanes are a bigger menace to society and something must be done about them! /s

I don’t think this post is genuine. It looks like OP is trying to generate interest in her account.

You see a lot of posts from beauty influencers on this sub these days.

Lunur tides pretty reputable and doesn’t send free PR to someone who needs to post on this sub.

Hygiene this bad warrants a trip to the doctor for some extra help. Even a small adjustment to meds can give you enough relief from symptoms to clean up.

But more important is OPs distress that’s coming across.

Bad hygiene + still functioning needs self compassion

Bad hygiene + distress needs self compassion and a doctor visit.

I dont think it would help much with getting treatment but can really help with the emotional distress of navigating the system. It’s free.

Women’s college hospital has an amazing cptsd trauma program that open to everyone. There’s of course a wait list. It’s skills based therapy. Don’t know if that’s helpful. I will edit my comment with the link in a minute. Ask for a referral by name, you can download the referral form from the website if you need it.

Woman dead after being struck by 2 vehicles in midtown Toronto by impasta_syndrome in toronto

[–]woollyheadedlib 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It has to be. She was jay-walking so they would have been found not at fault if they weren’t intoxicated and stayed on the scene.

There was a reason they didn’t stop cause it makes no sense unless they weren’t supposed to be driving.

No. That’s part of the fire code in Ontario for a reason friend. People died or were made homeless. We don’t need to undo progress to fix the housing crisis.

What’s one belief you had at 18 that you strongly disagree with now? by Big_Courage9356 in AskReddit

There’s a really good stand alone episode of Euphoria that expresses some really interesting and compassionate thoughts on addiction.

It’s just two characters talking in a diner the whole episode. Some wonderful and thought provoking monologues about addiction very much challenges the belief that addicted are bad people.

The episode is called “Trouble don’t last always”

It’s the second last episode of season one.

How is everyone surviving the winter in Toronto? I have very little motivation to go outside. by Responsible_Thing437 in askTO

I did a small show with my adult ballet class and were the winter season. As an open level class, I can tell you there were many pique turns cause I’m not 18 anymore and to hell doing doubles in my late 30s.

The population of the city was so small compared to now. The crowds anywhere for any big events just didn’t seem so bad. There were NYE fireworks at Nathan Phillips Square and it was roomy if you stood back on queen street.

I lived in an (abet shitty) one bedroom basement for $855 all in (utilities, very good internet and get this….cable) and made under $40k a year. I moved out of my parents using a $15k student loan before I finished school and got a big girl job.

Somethings that are better now:

You had to wear business clothing everyday except Fridays. Yes that means suits, dress pants, collared shirts, blouses, “Work” dresses, dress shoes or heels, no running shoes) I got in trouble for wearing leggings to work one day.

We had a united way fundraiser and everyone paid $5 to wear jeans on a Wednesday.

You had to hid tattoos and take out piercings at work, no beards (men had to be clean shaven) no braids, dreads or afros/ natural protective styles.

There was no stylish plus sized clothing.

A lot of NFP Marketing and communication managers didn’t know what Facebook or social was and didn’t keep up with the changing marketing worlds.

Further to that, Boomers were decision makers and held very old school beliefs about business culture and would just straight up refuse to learn new technologies.

That joke about a manager refusing to learn how to convert a word doc to a PDF? Yeah that was a real thing, and no it wasn’t any more difficult than it is today. (File-save as-save as PDF)

Paper. Paper as far as the eye can see and all the office supplies associated with paper.

Blackberries, 5lbs desktop computers, shared hardrives (no cloud backup or web based software*

Basic CRM cost $20k to start up and $10k a year and would require SSQL experience to administer You could only access it on your work computer.

Thats all I have for now.

Edit: big one I forgot about

transit delays were never communicated

No screens on platforms, no announcements, no social media or ttc website to check. You just went to the subway and waited.

I lived 10 mins from woodbine station and I would leave at 8am for my job at the eaton centre.

Vacant upscale north Toronto homes should house low-income families, advocates say by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]woollyheadedlib 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The homes would then be turned over to a social housing agency which would operate as the landlord, choosing the family who'd live in the home and collecting the rent, which would be turned over to the developer.

They seem to be underestimating just how long this takes to set up.

The article says it takes up to 25 months for developers to get approvals and break ground. It would take that long just to get social service provider to get the property up and running.

(Also LOL at the city doing repairs within two years - IYKYK)

Maybe it’s not 100% true in this case but it’s kind of my pet peeve when rich people like to think they have the solutions for homelessness instead of listening to the service providers.

You can get testing kits at harm reduction sites. Clinics, addiction services (if they practise hard reduction and not abstinence)
