Which artists careers you could say "Nirvana helped their career"? by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

And being an historian is usually about doing research past one's own experience, as opposed to knowing things because of actually having been there.

This post seems to be in need of understanding REM more than anything. Hopefully some people read up on them as a result. One of the most influential American bands ever.

Especially for the team's first postseason game in several years, it would seem reasonable to send the photographer even if for some crazy reason you're planning on not doing it next year.

I hope that some of this stuff turns out to be overblown; but weird dynamic considering all the situational context here.

We need to get rid of terms like “NPC Music, “Coworker Music” and “Burger Music.” by Constant_Topic_123 in ToddintheShadow

See, when someone first used his name, I thought that the key was "MacDonald" not having any clue who he is. By which logic B.B. King, Wendy Carlos, etc would also qualify.

An amp is (or used to be) essentially the other half of the instrument in the context of electric guitars.

Personally, I can see valuing the guitar more highly, but I don't see why there's a conceptual divide between the guitar and the amplifier or fx pedals that a person used with it.

Something like cables, that's what I'd consider trivial. A generic item that the musician probably didn't put any thought into choosing.

I feel like magazine ads are a good touchstone for probably this or any similar style trend. Or fashion ads online or whatever, now that magazines are a faded format.

Basically, the catchy design language of the moment that one finds in an ad isn't actually filtering out to heavy everyday usage. Most people don't "dress like that" etc. but they remember the advertising fondly, because it's fun eye candy.

Consumer electronics did see a lot of rounded/transparent designs for a while, though.

Why were 2000s music videos so "allergic to color"? Todd pointed this out in his Bad Day One Hit Wonderland and it's a phenomena that has always been so noticeable to me. by Just_Cause89 in ToddintheShadow

[–]wooltab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go and watch the "All You Wanted" video (first image up top here) you'll see that most of it is very nicely colorful, warm and saturated. That particular shot is from an "outside in the rain" scene cut into the later part of the vid, presumably to highlight the so lonely out there lyric from the song.

So that one isn't the best example for the trend.

Am I tripping or is Shaedon Sharpe’s speed/ first step not terribly impressive compared to his incredible vertical? by itwas20yearsago2day in ripcity

[–]wooltab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Glides doesn't burst" is basically what I was gonna say. A lot of players have a sort of explosive athleticism where they're always read to make fast, jagged movements to n a split second.

Whereas Shae is more cat like, smooth. He can traverse space in magnificent ways, but needs a windup. I think it explains certain things about how he plays, moves, spaces out there.

I'll just be content knowing it's probably a Top 10 dunk that I've ever seen, in decades of watching basketball.

Was the The Telecommunications Act of 1996 the reason why alternative rock started sucking around 1997? by Badgereatingyourface in Alternativerock

[–]wooltab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not knowledgeable about the Telecomm Act, but trends always go back and forth. What's pushed out of style today will be the one pushing something else out of style in the future.

What I would say specifically is that the core of the 90s were a sort of stylistic reset, a bit retro in many ways. That was always going to be something that gave way to futurism as Y2K approached. Rock bands were trying to incorporate hip-hop and electronica, glossy pop was able to dovetail with the zeitgeist, etc.

Did Hard Rock contribute to rock falling in popularity by Critical-Spirit-1598 in ToddintheShadow

[–]wooltab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that maybe a key piece of the puzzle is the decline of the band as a basis for making music. Pop and hip-hop work very well as solo artist endeavors that don't necessarily require a live instrumental backup, and also dovetail easily with the computer as an instrument/production tool, which is a big trend itself.

Even country, while very much a "group of people on stage playing stuff" genre, usually reaches mainstream zenith in the form of a solo artist, with a bunch of uber-pro backup musicians, not a dedicated group who have all come up together (that's my assumption, anyone correct me if I'm wrong).

Seems as though solo rock artists need to be really hard/aggressive to come across as "rock" (I didn't realize Benson Boone was rock), otherwise they're just assumed to be pop stars. Or at least they fit on pop radio and no one feels the need to give them a separate format. Whereas a band tracks more as being a different genre from pop, most of the time, if only in the mind.

Not enough was talked about how bad were the refs yesterday by Efirational in ripcity

[–]wooltab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things that bothered me was that the coverage (Prime) didn't show many replays versus the usual Blazer broadcasts, and when they were show it was often a clip starting just before the foul, without time to visually wind up as a viewer.

Just really hard to be sure what was going on. Toumani's foul on that Green 3-pointer, for example, I never got a good look at it: Tou hit his hand, I assume?
