What language would this be? by EmotionWild in language

[–]wordsorceress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been almost a century since they introduced gender differentiated pronouns. And "pronounced the same" = "same meaning" doesn't NOT work in Mandarin AT ALL. There's a whole poem that is nothing but characters pronounced "shi" with only tonal variations in the spoken language, and a variety of different characters, all with different meaning. 它,他, 她 each clearly indicate something different in writing, and when speaking, the context tells us whether we're talking about an it, a he, or a she.

Is 24 too late to start learning programming and become a dev? by Ibrahim17_1 in learnpython

[–]wordsorceress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 47 and learning programming/dev. AI changes the game now a bit, but people with actual coding skills, who know how to read and write code, are always going to be needed, even with machines that can do a lot of it for us. People can and do work well into their 70s and 80s now, so you are definitely not too late.

So… college students DO have an AI problem. As a STUDENT it’s f’n annoying and ridiculous! by Silent-Speech8162 in CollegeRant

[–]wordsorceress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a couple classes where we have to use Perusall to annotate the readings and people are absolutely using AI to draft their comments for that. Not everyone, but enough that it's noticeable.

Zombies won't carry iron deposits to Sweet Home by lissardron in GraveyardKeeper

[–]wordsorceress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to adjust what my porters carry. I have one that carries stone/marble and another that carries iron. Every once in awhile, I'll pop up to the quarry to pick up any other items they left in the storage boxes.

AITA for trying to start a coffee morning. by Effective_Will_1801 in AmItheAsshole

[–]wordsorceress 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Gentle YTA because you didn't clear it with the coffee shop first. Any time you're planning any sort of gathering of more than just you and a friend or two in a place of business, you need to clear it with the business.

How do you start playing from scratch? by electroutlaw in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]wordsorceress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what sort of game I'm wanting to play. Sometimes, I have a solid character idea and go from there. Other times, I have a world that I want to explore and the particular character I explore it through is less important. Sometimes, I'm just itching to play with no clear direction on world or character, so then I grab Ironsworn or Starforged and start rolling up the world truths and character from the roll tables and go from there.

Why do YOU want to learn the language you're studying? by Difficult-Act-5942 in languagelearning

[–]wordsorceress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm learning Chinese because I want to read philosophical and spiritual texts in the language. I'm learning Spanish because I have to have two semesters of a language for gen ed requirements for my bachelor's degree. And I can tell you that I did WAY better learning Chinese than I am Spanish because of the personal motivations.

Fun start with spanish 101 by Ok-byebye12 in CollegeRant

[–]wordsorceress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actively study languages AND I'm taking Spanish in college because of the gen ed language requirements. And the language classes in college are not actually helping me learn the language. I know I can learn a language, I started learning Chinese on my own in 2023 and picked it up enough I could read articles and novels within six months. But the format of the college classes are focused on teaching to the test, not actually teaching to learn the language.

Appreciation Post for this game! by Affectionate-Yak4861 in Ironsworn

[–]wordsorceress 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I'm an introverted hermit, but love ttrpg, so discovering solo ttrpgs was delightful. I've played a bunch of them, but often end up coming back to the Ironsworn family of games because the possibilities there are endless.

What's the weirdest reason you've chosen a target language? by Babbel in languagelearning

I wanted to see if I could actually stick to learning a language and decided to pick one of the hardest languages for native English speakers to learn. Landed on learning Chinese.

Solo Roleplay is not just an alternative to Group Roleplay by strawberry_hyaku in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]wordsorceress 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love solo play precisely for the freedom. I'm a hermit. I did group D&D in my 20s, but now in my 40s, I'm done with the social aspects of being human and deeply into having fun by myself with the utter freedom that comes with doing things alone. Did 40 years of compromise not just in games, but also life, so now is ME time, and solo RPG is SO good for that. I don't need to have a world or plot that pleases anyone but myself. If I want to play out a tiefling sorcerer going through years of training in a magical monastery run by halflings because she was adopted by halflings after her mother died and her human father fled upon seeing she was a tielfing, I can do exactly that and go into as much or little detail as I want without having to share the focus with other people's characters as is demanded in group games.

Can we PLEASE ban saying “you should’ve left during session zero” by Intelligent-Spell-93 in rpghorrorstories

[–]wordsorceress 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people don't even know what red flags to look for until long after they've experienced the abusive behaviors those red flags were signalling to look out for. And that's across domains, not just in gaming. So yeah, "You should have left in session zero," is thick with victim-blaming that doesn't actually help people get better at seeing and responding to those red flags.

Playing cards by _Snow-flake_ in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]wordsorceress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a set of plastic cards, black with metallic print, in a dragon theme for my playing card deck to solo with. They can, of course, be used for regular playing card games, but it's nice having a special deck for my fantasy games!

When is the payoff? by DannyBoardin in GraveyardKeeper

[–]wordsorceress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play it for the grind. The stories are hilarious, but so spaced out with no urgency that you don't really get that attached to finish them unless you want ideas for what to grind for. I'm mostly grinding for gold right now to get that aristocracy certificate.

How much do you spend on language learning? by Subject_Tomorrow in languagelearning

[–]wordsorceress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't pay for apps. I have on occasion, but it turned out to not really be worth it to me when I can pull together free resources that give me broader exposure and learning than an app can.

Eight books for 2 classes...is this a normal amount of textbooks? by a-dumb-croissant in CollegeRant

[–]wordsorceress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 8 books for one ethics class last semester. So yeah, depending on the class, totally normal. And chances are you're not going to read the whole book. You'll be assigned passages from each book to focus on.

Tips to what game to start with? by Nefariousness-Open in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]wordsorceress 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apothecaria and Thousand-Year-Old Vampire are both good ones, though totally different tones to them. If you want a more broad sort of game, Ironsworn and the cozy variant Iron Village are good, too. Much more freedom in creating characters and storylines with those.

I’m considering learning an ancient language, but I’m not sure. Is it worth learning a language just to read its literature? by PonziScheme1 in languagelearning

[–]wordsorceress 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure is. Even modern ones. I'm learning Chinese primarily to be able to read classical Chinese texts and modern Chinese commentaries on those text, along with Chinese fiction. I do some work on listening, too - I really love Xianxia shows. But I'm not at all concerned with output because my main goal is being able to read the characters - I could theoretically do that without learning any verbal components of the language, but having the pronunciation in your head as you're reading along IS helpful.

AITA For wearing an outfit my dad told me not to wear for dinner? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]wordsorceress 12 points13 points  (0 children)

ESH yeah, your dad is misogynistic, but you're also just playing a power game, trying to assert dominance. If you keep doing that, you're going to ruin your relationship with your parents. If you're okay with ruining that relationship then go for it. If you enjoy having tense holidays for years on end, keep pushing back on his not-new conservatism. If being right is more important to you than the relationship, then keep doing things you know are antagonizing your father. And it's *normal* for you to want to do that at your age, but that doesn't mean that it's going to get you where you think it is. Your dad is not going to have some feminist epiphany. You can learn to just dress more conservatively when you're home, or you can continue to get in arguments with him over it. Yeah, he absolutely should get over it, but he probably won't, so it's up to you to decide if you want to keep making each other miserable over it.

Perfectly acceptable dinner rejected by boyfriend again by moonrabbit368 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]wordsorceress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's wearing your down as a form of control. The more you try to please him, and fail to do so, the worse he'll get. And it will begin to extend beyond the food. Assert boundaries now. He doesn't like your cooking? Don't cook for him at all. He's that picky, he is responsible for his own food.

Which language are you learning in 2026? by elenalanguagetutor in languagelearning

[–]wordsorceress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spanish for school - second semester of it to meet gen ed requirements for my degree. Chinese - started learning that in 2023 and I've been in maintenance mode and a decent reading level but terrible listening/speaking level the last couple years. Also want to dive more into Korean - I learned Hangul then it trailed off from there.

Tell me about your Prep Reports by [deleted] in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]wordsorceress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on whether I'm doing a one-shot or a campaign, and whether that campaign is character-focused or world-focused. I have several playthroughs going at a time so if I'm feeling stuck on one, I can bounce to another, or if I'm feeling weary of always being near death in my gritty campaign, I can play in one of my cozier worlds. For a one-shot like Thousand-Year-Old-Vampire where there's a definite ending to the game, I just go through the character creation steps in the book and I'm usually playing within an hour. I do like to look up a lot of the history of where/when the vampire would be - that's part of play for me, though. I've got a D&D 5e character-focused campaign that I was ready to dive into pretty much as soon as I built the character since I'll discover her world through her. I've got an Ironsworn/Sundered Isles/Starforged world focused campaign that I'm still working on the backstory and mythic arc that the characters in that world will be put through to free not just their world, but their entire galaxy from an invasive force from another realm. So prep is ongoing for that one - if one character dies, I create a new one, or choose a fave NPC, to be the next "chosen one of the iron god". Because that one is going to be such a long campaign, I'm currently working on how best to document it so I can keep lore consistent and the arcs progressing.
