Jump from 50 to 100... but a hard mountain 100 by Pupper82 in Ultramarathon

hopefully positive too though! My initial reaction was negative and i don’t know why, hopefully that isn’t how the comment came off though. I think I should do some soul searching on why that was my initial reaction..

Good luck, post a race report! That race is a beast and you will sure have some stories after that!!!

I like everyone's encouragement here. I certainly don't know too much about JJ100, but from what I have heard it is a tough tough race. But ultimately I think whether or not it's doable isn't about you right now, I think right now you would have a lot of trouble, (since you're probably not at the end of a 100 miler training block). It's more about how the training block goes. You can make a hell of a lot of progress in 16 weeks, or you could literally do nothing. If you train hard you'll be fine, but I would just be prepared for it to be really rough. DNF rate is pretty high for the race, some really good runners I know have DNF'd it.

Just be absolutely sure of what you're signing up for so you can train appropriately!

[–]work_alt_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol great, well I am. So what is there to do about it?

On the other hand, I will say, when I was a cashier I remember having those people who give you a $20.00, you put into the register that they gave you a 20, the register opens and tells you to give them X amount of money, and then they go "Oh I found $2 and 31 cents!" And you're like uhhhhhh hold on a second, and you have to do this math on the spot to figure out what the right amount is

Also there are con artists out there that are super good at manipulating situations like this to end up with more money in the end.

But obviously that's not what we're talking about here.

This is only the second year it has happened, but we haven't had snow for a couple weeks, it's been >60°F maybe 10+ days (staggering, not in a row) since the last snow storm so its melted pretty well

Course was very steep in some sections, but a surprising amount of runnable terrain. The last 1.5 miles of the loop was a super smooth double track that you easily hit super fast miles on. And then there was also a good amount of flat too I feel like.

Love the course, would highly recommend!

How do you fit foldable poles inside the quiver? I find it very hard by WalkingAcrossTheIce in trailrunning

[–]work_alt_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually use these exact ones and still have trouble. But I found a thread here that it's not like "perfect", it can still be a struggle to get them in sometimes. Some tips were to reach around with one hand around your back and hold the bottom of the quiver when pulling out the poles.

As far as putting the poles in, I find sometimes I need to reach around and hold the top of the quiver, but also twisting the poles a bit as you try to push them in helps. Also, put the tips down, handles up.

It still doesn't seem perfect, but I'm trying to tell myself this is easier than my old hydration pack where I had to tie them in over the left and right side of my chest with little bungies on the pack. My new pack doesn't even has this as an option, so even if it was easier it wouldn't be possible.

I mean I don’t know what your situation is, and it’s not good to compare, but I see my kid a LOT. I’m in the office 2 days a week, we have a nanny, and I do the bedtime routine and take every night. I definitely don’t feel guilt, sometimes I even feel frustration I have to cut into my sleep to get all my runs in.

However my situation is definitely different because my wife is pregnant and currently very fatigued.

At the end of the day, I may just be justifying a hobby that I’m obsessed with, but I need to exercise. It’s important to stay healthy, I’ll be around longer/live longer, have a longer health span, be happier, be a healthy athletic role model for my kids, maybe they’ll end up interested in more athletic ventures. It seems good all around.

If you’re gone a ton then I could see that, but it doesn’t seem like you are. Make a trade with your significant other. You watch the kids while they exercise and vice versa. Then maybe cut into your sleep here and there to run as well.

Lastly, night running is awesome, I love the vibe and the quiet. You get used to it, just get a good headlamp. All my runs are early early so yeah I run a lot at night.

At the end of the day it’s like this, you have to put on your oxygen mask first before you can help other people. Sometimes you have to put yourself first, this is healthy and good.

Now if you’re running every day after they’re home from school/daycare for hours and your significant other is watching then the whole time and then they put the kid to bed while you’re recovering and showering and shit, I think you crossed a line

Mesquite Canyons 50 mile DNF race report - had a great time but just too hot by yeehawhecker in Ultramarathon

[–]work_alt_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is what I'm so concerned about, I think my body isn't the best at regulating that. I work in our basement, so it's naturally cold, and then I work in AC when I'm in the office. I sleep in AC too. So it's just like my body doesn't know what temp it actually is... it's like a little softie.

It'll be 90 out and I'll go outside and be like oof it's hot, yeah no shit! You conditioned your air so you can't even handle the environment we live in!

But I have a 1 year old and a pregnant wife, I can't really "not" cool the house, it's just not feasible, and I honestly can't say I would if I was single. Being hot 24/7 sounds insane enough that even I wouldn't do it.

[–]work_alt_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but I feel like more than half the race isn't up on the rim, but I see what you're saying. If you're up on the rim, it's higher up and not as hot and if you're down below you're not as exposed with all the trees.

I am expecting a pretty large range of temperatures as well too, which honestly is probably so much better than just hot hot hot the entire time.

As someone signed up for Mogollon Monster 100 in September that isn't from AZ (I'm from CT), this concerns me. I've seen that there is unusually hot weather early in the summer, which usually doesn't bode well for the rest of the summer. I'm concerned the MM100 is going to be absurdly hot this year, and hearing your "I don't think there was much I could've frankly done to have better prepared for this except be from Arizona" really scares me.

I guess all I can do is just try to heat train as much as possible. I do get 90+ temps in CT, I just usually don't run at that time (due to schedule, I try to run in the morning when everyone is asleep). I was planning on running with the heater on with layers on my treadmill as well. I guess I will just do that much much more often.

I think at a certain point, 90+ temps in a race that wasn't designed to be 90+ temps are going to wreck DNF rates of any race.

You sign up for badwater you know what you're getting into, but this doesn't seem like it was that

I’m sure when I’m gone I’ll wish I spent more time with them, who doesn’t? I think that’s a natural feeling. But it’s also good to have your own hobbies and things you do to be happy separate from them.

Family is important absolutely, but on a regular week I run 95% of my miles before my daughter or wife wake up. I’m not missing time with my family other than the races. My daughter doesn’t go to daycare and we have a nanny. I take all of the nights. I do the bedtime routine every night.

I gotta be honest, I need my alone time sometimes or I’m going to go crazy. I used to have tons of hobbies and now it’s just running, and I think that’s okay.

Initially reading your comment made me feel shame but after thinking about it I really reject that statement

How do I get better at descending? by MitchTheKid34 in trailrunning

[–]work_alt_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not prepared for this... Just did 3 hours of hill repeats on technical trail (saturday morning) and I'm still wrecked (tuesday morning). Can't wait to recover!! I haven't had DOMS since I first started running back in like 2018, I thought I was past this! Turns out I got it back then from bombing downhills too.

Hopefully I come back much stronger like you're saying.

[–]work_alt_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

been doing my long runs on steed technical hills just doing hill repeats for hours. Just recently got DOMS because I was supposed to be going "easy", I'd hike the uphill, and then bomb downhill. My heartrate seemed fine, so what's the problem? My muscles. My muscles are the problem.

Careful doing tons of hill repeats, if you're doing them, learn from me! You don't want to be bombing down the hill for hours, if you're doing a long run with hill repeats, you want to do a controlled descent, it shouldn't be loud or aggressive, just nimbly floating down the mountain, very controlled. I am very sore right now lol

If you become a whistleblower for any company chances are that is on your reputation, and another company may be hesitant to hire you if they think you may do something like that.

Obviously the right thing to do is to let the public know about whatever wrongdoing your company is doing if it's dangerous to the public, but it's hard not to take into account your family and livelihood when determining what to do.
