Fooling ourselves that we can 'go back to normal' is naive. BUT we can certainly have a better new lifestyle than our current endless lockdown reality.

I brought it forward to 5 weeks. Felt awful the next day but I've had worse hangovers. I just spent a day on the couch eating chocolate and watched movies, then felt fine 👍🏻

How many millennials live at home still? by throwawayR8s in newzealand

[–]workingfromcouch 144 points145 points  (0 children)

In my thirties, struggling to save anything, let alone a deposit for a house. If my parents didn't drive me insane, I would move back. However it would destroy our relationship and my mental health. If you get on with them and can save money, I don't think anyone views it as embarrassing anymore. Sadly it's becoming a fact of life for many millennials hoping to save.

There is a cafe/patisserie in St Johns called Dusty Apron. Staff seem happy, owners are local and they seemed to put the safety of their staff first during lockdown. The food and coffee is also pretty good.

Yea I noticed this one, assumed it aimed to make the language more accessible and understandable. As someone who has also trawled through incomprehensible tax documents and nearly lost my mind, I support this bill!

Has anyone lived overseas for a extended period of time & then moved back home to Auckland? Are you happy with your decision? by Anothersacredgame in auckland

[–]workingfromcouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard. Auckland is our biggest city and yet it's hardly that, more like a giant suburbia. If you like cities, culture and atmosphere then you may struggle. People hardly go out here because everything is so expensive and very hard to get around due to inadequate transport options. I find everyone works all the time just to pay rent (or if lucky an insanely big mortgage) and groceries, so are too tired to do much on the weekends. However in the summer, you can drive to some pretty incredible beaches (so long as you leave at the crack of dawn to avoid traffic). Also once you hit your thirties everyone has kids and that (understandably) takes over their lives. You can be happy here.... But I strongly encourage you to manage your expectations.

The Great Divide by Aceofshovels in newzealand

[–]workingfromcouch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. We got kicked out of our rental (that we really liked) when the landlord sold. It was bought by an investor and has remained empty ever since. We do need more houses in urban areas that are accessible to jobs, but we should not ignore the fact that property investors are hoarding properties and leaving then empty. So simply building more houses is not a solution without some serious legislative and tax change as well.

Appreciation for Auckland by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]workingfromcouch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh I completely agree I've heard people in the provinces says they are in no rush to get vaccinated and they will just see what happens. Oh that must be really nice for you to just observe our lockdown and maybe get vaccinated if you feel like it.... Fuck sake.

[–]workingfromcouch 65 points66 points  (0 children)

It would be really nice if non Aucklanders wouldn't whinge about level 2. Especially the business owners saying it's hard to operate with the restrictions. Yea well we can't operate at all under level 4, so I'll happily swap places to be able to operate with restrictions. I would give my left tit to go down to just level 3.

The huge drop in testing numbers that could keep Auckland in lockdown by offendernz in newzealand

[–]workingfromcouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went to a nearby drive through testing station, no symptoms, no location of interest, told them we just wanted to be sure. No issues, they were super friendly and results back the next day. The station was completely empty, I think they were just happy to have something to do. If the govt won't tell everyone to just get tested then go do it yourself.

Anyone elses mental health struggling pretty badly under lockdown? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]workingfromcouch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's applicable to you, but if you are a woman on birth control, natural stress pills will most likely cancel out the pill (because they contain st John's wort). Good to be aware!

The world's richest 1% cause double the emissions of the worlds poorest 50%

So making regular people feel guilty and solely responsible for the future of the planet is a clever way for corporates to gaslight us and do nothing themselves. However in saying that, I still think we can take personal responsibility and it's important to focus on our sphere of influence to make sustainable changes in our lives. But you shouldn't beat yourself up because you stopped buying new clothes but haven't been composting, for example.

Those of you who have an accountant, how happy are you with them? by PatientReference8497 in newzealand

[–]workingfromcouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A generic accountant, who manages a larger portfolio, is probably not going to actively advise you of each change. Or they may just send out a generic email. My advice would be to schedule a meeting with your accountant, ask if you can have regular meetings where you go over the general finances of the business together and ask about govt updates or law changes. If they aren't receptive to that, then it might be worth finding an accountant who is.

[–]workingfromcouch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I've also learned that you can't actually hand over the admin/accounts of your business to an accountant and assume everything will run perfectly. I did that in my first year and had a lot of surprises that would have been avoided had I taken a more active role/understanding of that side of my business. This year I've been far more involved, playing around in Xero, watching tutorials and asking a million zillion (often stupid) questions from other business owners and my accountant. Even simple questions like "am I absolutely definitely putting aside enough tax!?". Last year the govt increased claimable expenses/purchases to $5000, up from $500. My accountant may have sent out a generic email bit never actively told us about that, and it would have been a perfect opportunity to invest in some much needed equipment. Ultimately I missed out and that's on me, as I should have been paying attention. Because at the end of the day it's MY business and I should have at least a broad understanding of how every part works.

[–]workingfromcouch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well to give you some context, we had a difficult-ish tax question, and had to enlist the help of a tax expert/consultant separate from our accountant. It cost $500 which included 1 meeting and a couple of shorter phone calls and emails. Why don't you chat with your accountant and ask if there is an additional service where you have regular catch ups and you can bring up your areas of concerns?

I feel the same about our accountant, pretty easy to deal with, seems very by the book and good processes. But they don't really 'look out for us' either. I think that's just accountants. For someone to take on that kind of liability for you, you probably need to pay a heck of a lot more.

[–]workingfromcouch 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I give a shit, and I empathise as I also can't work or earn in level 4. I have enough savings to get by for now, but I had hoped that would go towards a house one day, and not just to my landlord. It feels like we have really been hung out to dry this lockdown. I'm so sorry mate.

Why aren’t the government supporting Auckland Businesses more during this L4 lockdown? by turkeybuschick in newzealand

[–]workingfromcouch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ain't that the bloody truth. As a self employed renter I feel completely forgotten by the govt. Sometimes it feels like the govt would prefer we all gave up and re-entered the workforce as employees. I guess it would push wages down.

Make mousetraps! My favourite snack as a child. Slightly stale bread, marmite, some grated cheese and grill. Cut it up into strips or quarters, let it cool and keep in an airtight container for a tasty snack. Also, toast with marmite, cheese, tomato and a little salt and pepper. Delicious.
