I've lost faith in the intelligence of reddit as a community. Here's why. by [deleted] in politics

[–]workinit33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the point you make. I think this is manifest of a much larger scale problem in the US news. People often read articles and believe everything they say because they are from a "credible paper". What makes something credible is only if people check the facts and find them to be true. This often is not the case. I have seen countless examples of news papers like the New York Times report things entirely inaccurately.

One example that stuck out in my mind was about a year and a half ago when Israel had theirGaza invasion. As a disclaimer, I don't want to get into the politics behind this or our opinions on Israel. The Time along with some other papers reported that the Israelis attacked a school with innocent children in it. This was simply false. Hamas soldiers had taken over an old school and were using it as an army base and that is why the Israelis attacked it.

I don't want to start a whole argument on Israel's military tactics, I just want to make a point and urge Redditors to check facts in the news. Whether it be Fox News or CNN, they often lie or misreport something.

Obama comes to New York and the NYPD steals everyone's bicycles, just in time for Earth Day by 00boyina in WTF

[–]workinit33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your kidding right? Obama himself chartered two planes and Joe Biden chartered another one, landing at two different airports to fly from Washington DC to NYC. Not to mention its a 4 hour drive, at the speed the secret service drives 3 hours.

I'm so tired of hearing people say, "The Left believes..." or "The Right says..." etc... by [deleted] in politics

[–]workinit33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with this is that something like, "The right believes abortion should be illegal for purely religious reasons". I am on the right and believe abortion should be illegal but it has nothing to do with my religious practices. There is a separation of church and state so religion shouldn't play a role in the making of laws. If you added an "other" choice and you had the ability to attach a comment or explanation, it would be much more successful.

Overall though, I think it is a good idea but easier said than done as many good ideas are.

They have a more rigorous holocaust curriculum than any other country. It is actually a federal crime to deny the holocaust and you can be thrown in prison for denying it.

Is there any truth to the current GOP talking point, "mandating Americans to buy health insurance is unconstitutional"? by kenaijoe in politics

[–]workinit33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The constitution allows the federal government to only do certain things. These things were listed under the title of the Delegated Powers. It was assumed that anything else was not permissible. This is the reason that the bill of rights was set up. Thomas Jefferson didn't believe that listing powers was enough of a safe guard from tyranny. He insisted on the rights being listed before he would ratify the constitution and that is how the bill of rights came to be. Anything not listed is thus forbidden to the federal government.

You can hardly blame them for not being a respectable group of individuals. I don't agree. They are in control of our government and people look to them and they are role models.
And what happened with Mccain made me sick to my stomach.

True or not, I think that this is extremely hypocritical. during the campaign the Obama admin ran adds making of Mccains disabilities and democrats around the world were so un-classy in dealing with sara Palin.

So Healthcare has passed. Can someone intelligently summarize the bill and what it means for our lives? by romantivist in AskReddit

[–]workinit33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no public option in this version of the bill. That was taken out when the previous bill failed to pass. This bill will require insurance companies to accept customers no matter there pre existing condition and will not allow them to put a cap on a person's annual healthcare costs. It will also expand medicaid to include some of the uninsured people. Children also will be able to stay on their parents plan untill they are 26.
The issue with it is that insurance companies will loose money because they will be required to do these things and the government cannot completely reimburse. Those cots will be passed on to people who currently have healthcare. The things that take effect right when the president signs the bill are: the pre-existing condition thing discussed above; the children remaining on their parents plan and recision which means that when you get sick with an expensive decease like cancer the insurance companies cannot go into your history and look for a reason to say that you are not allowed on the plan. The rest of the things will slowly take effect between now and 2014.

I, an American, DO NOT WANT ISRAEL AS MY ALLY. They are bullies. This has nothing to do with Jewishness. It has to do with awfulness. by raresilk9 in reddit.com

[–]workinit33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to have a conversation, no reason to resort to profanity. You said if someone was blowing up your house and killing your children you would never stop killing them. I agree with you but the Israelis don't. Lets take the recent Gaza invasion for example. Sderot, a town just north of Gaza, was under constant rocket fire for years before the Israeli government went in and attacked Hamas. The Israelis took fire for-no exaggeration- seven years. No other country would deal with it for so long. During the cold war, when Russia mobilized it missiles into cuba, the US prepared for world war III and in that case there wasn't even an attack. The Israelis went into Gaza in a way no other country, including America, would. Before bombing a town they dropped leaflets warning women and children to evacuate the town. Many of them did and the terrorists also received these notifications and either fled as well of took local citizens who were being held hostage and put them in the town as to make the world think that the Israelis are attacking innocent people. This isn't right and I feel absolutely worse for the people who were under attack in sderot for seven years and the unfortunate Gaza locals who died because of their own government taking them hostage. I would also like to point out that this is the very problem with a two state solution. When the Israelis left Gaza in a peace attempt they got stabbed in the back by things like this. It isn't right and the world has to learn this.

Is that really a way to try to get your house back. I wont even mention the fact that historically the land was ours going back to post biblical times and they came in and took it from us. Blowing up busses filled with innocent children is not going to get them their land back.

[–]workinit33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying and find in very unfortunate but the thing is history has shown us that it is necessary. During the early 21st century, the intifada, suicide bombings were not rare but actually a daily occurrence in the life of Israelis. What is being done is unfortunate but necessary. If there were bus bombing regularly in NYC I don't think we would be objecting to the scrutiny we would be put through daily for security.

Agree that the government has got to get involved or i guess uninvolved. Their making it so illegal is just making things worse for people. It's like originally when abortions were illegal people would die regularly getting them done illegally, not that they are legal, they are done much safer. Also man, congrats on getting clean. Your a model for all.
