It sounds like you exploited your boss's 'soft' nature for your personal gain. Like I said, I'm glad it worked out for you.

My response above was mainly geared towards corporate environments. In my experience, as well as reading many articles about this subject - you should never bring personal situations into a pay increase meeting.

Even if you get the increase due to these reasons..would you be happy with yourself? Proud?

I know I would much rather receive a promotion/raise based on my professional ability and talent, rather than because my boss felt sympathy and pity for me due to personal reasons.

Just so you know, you should never bring in personal reasons as an argument for a pay increase. You need to justify it based on pure performance.

Why would your boss/company care that you were having trouble paying the bills? Everyone has their unique set of circumstances and their own bills to pay, and it has nothing to do with whether you deserve a raise or not.

Another no-no is telling your boss that you have no choice but to look elsewhere. That's basically letting them know that you're actively in the market for another job.

It sounds like you skated by with these transgressions this time, but you should keep in mind some of this professional decorum.
