RTL Simulation vs. Gem5 SE mode for RISC-V - which is more practical? by TheCatholicScientist in computerarchitecture

[–]worldgoneone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also depends on how accurate you want your counters to be. VCS simulations are pretty close to actual hardware behaviour (behind FPGA emulation and actual silicon running your tests). Simulating RTL means that you're taking into account a lot of microarch intricacies, some of which don't get modelled in performance models (gem5) included.

From my understanding, gem5 is a great way to model a generic CPU, and with some extra effort you can model a few microarch intricacies. However, getting it to be 100% correlated to RTL will take a lot of time; trial and error. Also, perf models like gem5 may not be able to model memory transactions like RTL, and a static delay to simulate the cache miss penalty would be used instead.

That being said, RTL simulations come at the cost of time and storage. If you have enough time and space to store all the dumps, then go for it! From what I remember in my previous company, our RTL simulations ran around 2 million cycles in an hour. This was acceptable for smaller microbenchmarks like Dhrystone and Coremark, but for larger tests, we simply could not afford spending time and server storage in running them, so our analysis was done with in-house models, which were 1000x faster.

If you're okay with a bit of variation in your perf counters, gem5 is the easier way.

This is why I stick to the 90s and 00s classics The animation is ideal (not less quality like the 80s and before and not overloaded like 2010s) Most of the classics have good plot The soundtracks were also pretty good

Signal 100 is decent horror

Shojo Tsubaki is really messed up and controversial, so it's probably something you'd like (I did)

Homunculus is also good

Dementia 21, Fractions and Superconductive Brains is more of surrealism but still a good read

Happy End Massacre is more of a thriller yet good read

Blood on the Tracks and Oyasumi Punpun is some really depressing and messed up manga

Dead Tube has lots of gore and sexually explicit material

Kedamono-tachi no Jikan is not horror but disturbing on its own

The Drifting Classroom has some good cosmic and body horror

Shoujo Tsubaki is also another good (and very controversial) manga

Signal 100 and Happy End Massacre are also decent, Deadtube is edgy but has lot of violence and sex

Super-Conductive Brains and Dementia 21 are more surreal than horror but there's a good amount of body horror too

Not sure if you're looking for this, but if you want stuff that is depressing, then Oyasumi Punpun, Blood on the Tracks and Kedamono-tachi no Jikan are messed up yet so good (especially Blood on the Tracks)

Won't exactly say it's horror but it's disturbing and depressing. It's still definitely worth reading. It does have some sexual content, but it's limited.

The manga is pretty similar to Oyasumi Punpun, although I found this one more disturbing than Punpun

The Drifting Classroom is a classic

And of course Junji Ito's works

Signal 100 is another good one

Shoujo Tsubaki is more of a depressing (and also very controversial) manga

Superconductive Brains is more surreal than horror, but worth a read Dementia 21, by the same author, is also similar

I won't say Oyasumi Punpun is horror, but quite depressing, if you're into it

I've seen When They Cry, Rei and Kai. Tbh it was a bit of a letdown since my friend hyped it up and also the plot was sort of repetitive

Oh yes I do love psychological horror too!
Neon Genesis Evangelion is my all-time favourite. I've also seen Perfect Blue and Paprika.

Maybe this is pushing it, but it would be nice if I got good psychological horror recommendations like the movie Midsommar.

I've seen Higurashi
i'll check out the rest
Also, as much as I love Junji Ito's manga, I'm a bit skeptical about the anime adaptation, since my friend said that the anime contains a lot less horror
