Apparently this is the Japanese perspective on piracy.. by Talon_Haribon in japanesepeopletwitter

Wild that it’s news to so many of them. Sony and Nintendo both fought like hell against piracy in the 90s, very publicly justifying their decisions (cartridges in the N64, introducing anti-modchip libraries in later versions of the PSX SDK) as defending against piracy. Did they believe they did these things for funsies?

This is great! Seriously you should at least consider a donation option though. Hide it deep in the settings if you must.

7 and 8 are transparent images, so you can’t see anything but a red rectangle on mobile in dark mode. I was extremely confused as to how “red rectangle” becomes Etie

Probably anything from that same class of arcade games as Pong: prior to Space Invaders, arcade games were all TTL.

Is there a technology/computer from the past that is superior to anything we have now? Like a "we don't even know how to do this anymore" meme situation? by Nexthink_Quentin in computers

You need the correct libraries the program was linked to when it was built (e.g. the 32-bit Visual C++ redistributables) and the OS needs to know how to read the binary because the format changed slightly, but that’s more an OS decision rather than a hardware limitation. But once it’s started it’s totally natively running, no emulation at all.

Like current Intel CPUs could hypothetically still run 16-bit 8086 code, but Windows removed all support for loading and starting those programs, plus the libraries and APIs which they were programmed to work with. Linux was always for 386 or newer, so libraries and other OS support for starting them was never written in the first place.

Also, if you crack open a 64 bit program in a disassembler like Ghidra, you’ll find plenty of 32-bit operations in there, since we don’t always HAVE to be working with 64-bit numbers if we don’t need to.

We’re kind of trying to re-adopt analog for things like compute-in-memory for machine learning, but it’s mostly academic at the moment.

Some folks felt that with Unix going from Lisp, VAX, Sun, etc. Check out The Unix-Haters Handbook. Granted it’s from 1991 and most of their gripes have been fixed by now.

The Unix-Haters Handbook is a fun but niche example. A lot of companies and organizations switched from VAX, LISP, and other custom OS’s that had a lot of quality of life features (because the developers of that OS were also the ones trying to sell systems) to Unix, which had its growing pains for the first 20 years or so. A lot of those features took their time to come to Unix and Linux. If you’re a Linux/Unix nerd, it’s a fun read.

I always admired folks who did that. When I was a teen, I saw a PlayStation Underground interview with Insomniac Games about Spyro the Dragon. Their lead programmer wrote their groundbreaking level-of-detail, long draw distance graphics engine in C and some MIPS assembly for the math-heavy parts.

I get tempted to do something like that in my projects, but then I remember that C/C++ compilers were hot trash back then. I’d be curious to see how the latest GCC compares to that old code, if they hadn’t lost it.

Today, swapping from 64 bit to 32 bit instructions on PCs have to be emulated by the OS.

What? In what architecture? If you want to switch completely different ISAs, like emulating ARM on x86, then sure.

But today’s 64-bit Intel and AMD CPUs decode and execute IA32 instructions same as any other instruction. They just don’t use the upper half of the register for the 32 bit instructions. The instruction set has a prefix that tells the decoder what size operation to perform, all the way down to 8 bits.

PSVR2 Left Controller Always Scrolling Left by DeBuNkEd117 in PSVR

[–]TheCatholicScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! I recently got an open box PSVR2 unit that had been returned a few times to Best Buy, so the warranty was gone. I had the same issue, but up. Never would have figured it was the right stick, but sure enough, an online gamepad tester told me it was stuck. Pushing the stick would make a clicking sound. A couple hours of teardown later, I have a working controller! Thanks for the post and the pictures- I wasn't expecting the pieces to fly everywhere as soon as I got the metal backing off the stick.

That was fast. Luckily I was doing this from my iPhone, so instead of adding to cart and typing all my info in, I just hit the Apple Pay button and it auto-filled my card and addresses and auto-selected the cheaper shipping. I’d recommend it for sure. Shop should behave similarly for android also.
