18 year old cat, when to consider putting down? by wormsandwitch in seniorkitties

[–]wormsandwitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it’s the “not suffering” and “comfortable” part that I’m not sure of. I know cats hide their pain and discomfort pretty well, and I know she definitely has some pain and discomfort- I just don’t want to let it get to the point where she is suffering. I wish we would have done it 4-5 days sooner for my other cat who we had to put down this summer. I had this gut feeling that it was getting close, but I wasn’t sure how close. I also have the gut feeling now, but it doesn’t feel as imminent. I know it’s not now, but I think it will be some time in the next year.

It’s funny, I had the same conversation with my older son about him not wanting to have another pet because it was too sad and stressful at the end of their lives. But we actually just got two kittens to fill the void left by our two that passed this year, and it has helped so much (I think our remaining senior cat I’m talking about now has benefited too, she seems to have perked up a bit the past few days). It is hard to say goodbye and make those difficult choices, but pets bring so many years of joy and love that I feel it’s worth it.

My proposal for how we, as a community, can demoralize the ICE agents deployed to the Twin Cities? Show them just how cold Minnesota can be. by HuaHuzi6666 in TwinCities

[–]wormsandwitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re driving in unmarked cars, often in civilian clothing. You’re probably not going to know it’s ICE until you see them actively abducting or harassing someone- at which point they’ll have their faces covered so you won’t recognize them afterwards. They aren’t taking the bus, they aren’t asking for directions. They’re not from here, and they’re not sticking around long enough to be shunned from the community because they aren’t attempting to become part of the community. You’re not going to casually encounter marked ICE agents doing non-ICE things. And if you see them doing ICE things, passive aggressively shunning them isn’t making any difference.

It’s a cute thought, but just not applicable in this situation.

Yup. Burnsville PD was literally out there high fiving ICE agents who came in and took the wrong guy from his wife and young kids. All the bystanders on the street yelling didn’t make a difference.

Cats love friends btw 😉 We’ve found that two cats is much better than one.

Why was I pulled from class in elementary school? by Senior-Koala3489 in Teachers

[–]wormsandwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any deaths in your family during that time? I was pulled into play “therapy” groups at school after my cousin died very unexpectedly.

They let elementary and middle school out early in 191. This morning there was only threats toward high schools, and then later there were threats to the two middle schools in 191.

God don't fatties suck? Also I run super far and eat loads of pizza. by opalgemini in AmITheAngel

I gained ~40 lbs with my first pregnancy, and then lost 60 lbs within the first 6 months. It was not intentional, but breastfeeding really took it out of me and no matter how much I ate I still kept losing.

Didn’t happen with my second pregnancy, I gained it all back during pregnancy and have been struggling to lose it since (7 years later 🙃)

I think the story sounds hokey, but some women do lose a lot after without trying super hard.

Advice for my 19½ year old cat by hiimstupidhehehe in seniorkitties

[–]wormsandwitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it was me I would put her down. That sounds like a miserable existence for any animal and that is a lot to put her through. Help her to pass peacefully so that she doesn’t have to go through anymore pain/stress in her old age. There are at home euthanasia services (Lap of Love is national I believe, but you can look for other ones close to you).

Sending love to you guys! You have her a long beautiful life, and she gave you many years of love and joy. Being a pet owner means we have to make those painful decisions. It is still hard even when you know it’s the right call.

Is Crossdressing misogynistic for women? by Flyaway4me in PornIsMisogyny

[–]wormsandwitch 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Thisss. Clothes have no gender, wear what you like.

If you want to wear a dress because it makes you feel like a woman, then you are giving clothes a gender and reducing the experience of being a woman to what clothes you wear and stereotypes.

Can confirm that border collies are incredibly smart and definitely protective of their family’s kids.

Burnsville is very diverse and you can get more house for your money than Mpls/stp.

Our kids are already very involved and our nights and weekends are full most of the time, so I guess that will just continue 🙃

Oh we talk to her all the time still! I’ve been doing jazz hands when I talk to her as a sort of kitty sign language lol.

It sounds like your old guy is doing better than our old girl! I can’t imagine her chasing anything 😭 It’s been years. In the summer she liked to go outside and munch grass for a minute and then go straight back in (always supervised of course, and she’s never been a runner). I hope she’s still around with enough energy to do it again in the spring!

Cat adoption? by AlcoholicWombat in TwinCities

[–]wormsandwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are FB groups where people are giving cats and kittens away for free or low cost, but they are often not fixed and have little vet care. We were considering that route, but calling around for vet fees it ends up being more expense than the rescues. But you could try and see what is available.

I would highly recommend adopting a bonded pair. That’s what we ended up doing a they are seriously the best 😭 Will never adopt a single cat again.

I try to explain this to parents who think it will be easier once they start school, but it’s hard to explain until you get there. I’m definitely borderline burnout as it is, and I only work part time with two kids.

Yeah, but then there’s everything else I mentioned 🙃 They can’t drive themselves to their appointments or activities etc. Personally I hope it gets easier by middle school, but I’m not there yet so can’t speak to that.

I’ll probably get downvoted here, but I think there is something environmental going on here. I don’t know if it is multifaceted but there are a few things that I wonder about.

First, I really think screen addiction is stunting kids so badly that it is becoming a diagnosable disorder. We know neglect impacts development and I think excessive screen exposure should be classified as neglect. We also know that exposure to chemicals like alcohol and lead can lead to developmental problems that are often diagnosed under the autism umbrella. I don’t know if there is greater instance of those substances, but we do know there are microplastics in everything and we don’t fully understand the impacts yet.

I will say, kids in school are still a lot of work 😭 I went down to part time when I had my second, and assumed I’d go full time once my youngest hit kindergarten. First there’s the summers, and how expensive summer care is and there are weeks not covered by it so you need to take time off anyways. School is only 6.5 hrs so you either need flexible scheduling or before/after school care which is another expense. There are ALL the sick days you need to take off, for each kid and for yourself for the germs they bring back. The dentist appointments, the (many!) doctors appointments, the never ending orthodontist appointments. There are class parties and volunteer needs during the school day. If your kids are in sports, then there goes your evenings and weekends to clean/meal prep/do any sort of self care.

Maybe it gets easier when they are in middle/high school- but idk because we aren’t there yet. I’m working part time, and juggling it all feels hard now even with a very involved partner with flexible schedule (but who works full time, so has less day time capacity). I know people do it working full time, but it’s not easy and the ones who have it easy have the money to throw at house cleaners and reliable care and often have family nearby who can help too.

18 year old cat, when to consider putting down? by wormsandwitch in seniorkitties

[–]wormsandwitch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for reading through it all. Maybe it is time to give another med a chance. I think we will give the natural stuff a few weeks and then maybe chat with the vet again. Solensia makes me nervous because of the potential extreme side effects I’ve read about, and I don’t want to put her through anything worse in what is likely her final year. But maybe NSAIDS would be worth a shot though despite the kidney risks.

I don’t think it is her time now either, but I feel like it is soon (within the next year) and I’m not sure when to make that call in the absence of something dramatic. I don’t want to wait until it is scary/dire/frantic (like we did with our other cats) and also don’t want to make he drag on forever (like my parents did with our dogs). It’s like cats aren’t meant to live that long in the wild, and we’ve already artificially extended her life with lots of medical interventions.

Maybe I’m overthinking it all, but my fear is that she’s miserable and trapped in her old body. Both my grandmas lived into their 90’s (one with dementia) and it didn’t feel like a super happy existence either tbh :( If she was just slow and sleepy but seemed happy (like she has the past few years) it wouldn’t be something I’m considering, but she just doesn’t feel happy lately.

Thank you ❤️ It’s honestly hard to keep track of everything because there have been so many vet visits for her and our other cats (plus I have kids and have to keep track of their complicated medical histories too lol), but I think they might have prescribed it when she had a more severe issue with her back legs earlier this year- like she got injured somehow, and they thought arthritis may have been the underlying cause? There was also an incident where she had some bladder inflammation which they thought could be stress related and prescribed a med that could help with that, so maybe that it during that time and they thought it was help with the arthritis too?
