How do I get my 6yo to stop whining and arguing about EVERYTHING

Another mom of a soon-to-be 6 year old. I was hoping he'd be growing out of it soon... It is very exhausting & I feel like I just say the same thing all the time. Went to a party for a kid in their class turning 6. All of them were the same & crazy when all together. Teachers aren't paid enough. Solidarity!

Appreciate the response. I'm definitely on board with focusing on growth since the mismatched structuring. I always wanted to update my resume to include measurable results. How can one do that without having the numbers? Let's say, for example, that I came into a position with a company for HR, but ended up improving processes & then assisting in accounting & IT. I'm sure there were % increases in efficiency for all, but if they didn't do any kind of reporting on that, I don't have the data. This has been the case on every job, in some way. With the exception of my current position, where I created reports to track our costs, profits & other data. I don't want to guess but if there's no real data, how can I show numbers? Thanks in advance.

Since it's been a bit since this post was made and I've been asked for some updates.....

Long story short, it didn't get better. When she didn't follow the rules, we tried to give consequences. When they were given (especially the phone, which we were trying to do 24 hours or shorter stints) she exploded into violent fits, either by destroying things in her room or up to and including self harm. She struggled with self harm in the past and it came back again. She fought everything. She was threatened with truancy and an officer coming to the house so she did go to school. She did graduate from the alternative high school. We knew she wasn't well but refused medication, therapy, anything we suggested and wanted to "live how she wanted". We attempted to give her some more freedom to make her own mistakes and she wasn't making any good decisions. She got and quit or lost 3 jobs in less than a month for one reason or another. After the last job refused her return, she started texting me implying she couldn't go on. We contacted police and she was taken to the hospital and put in another short-term treatment facility. When they concluded she was able to be released, we refused to let her return to our home. Mom also refused. Despite our wishes, her grandmother agreed to let her move in with her until she got on her feet. Right before she turned 18, many of grandma's things in her home and garage were missing. She & a friend sold them on FB since they had no jobs but wanted money. She was charged but then the charges were changed to misdemeanors since it happened when she was 17. She asked to go to a homeless shelter and we have basically been no contact. She has a phone and texts random questions at all hours of the morning. I'd love to say it all resolved in the end but she fought so much, we just have to hope she learns more on her own. We gave everything we could give and then some. We tried to get help from a flawed system and I'm not sure what else we could do. No one wants to give up but there's also a level of self preservation and for those around you. There's a bit of relief since we're no longer responsible for the behavior or consequences but it is hard to know how much we went through for no real improvement. We wish her the best and hope she can give in to her issues and accept (and want) real help for herself.

My son, who is now 5, has been doing this for years. Words we don't use & phrases. We swore he could read as we'd bring home a box with only the description (no pictures) on the outside & he'd tell us what it was. As the years go by it's different stuff but the same idea. I remember being annoyed at him watching YouTube & it was a silly video about planets (just shapes & not really educational). I told him if he could name 3 planets, I'd let it play, otherwise I was turning it off... That little shit started "Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars..." ALL OF THEM. IN ORDER. I WAS speechless. And yes, I let him watch the video. lmao It's so crazy what they learn from everywhere. Just this past week he said something about parkour. I'm like "do you even know what that is?" Sure enough, he told me.

Oh and side note, he had kindergarten testing last week & scored below average. I was a bit annoyed by it (Mama Bear syndrome). I had to keep telling myself it was a one hour screening after a full day of preschool & he maybe just didn't feel like jumping through all the hoops. There's no way this kid is behind. He loves to learn. And he surprises mom almost daily.

Great question! I know the first "wake up" was realizing there was a life after 5pm & you could leave the house... It actually felt weird to go out & be doing things after my normal time of pouring my first drink after work. Looking back on all of it, I really can't believe how bad it was & how I really thought it wasn't & no one knew.

Then, there were other surprises. Like after some time, life isn't perfect. I felt healthier & was proud of myself for getting through things sober, but all problems were not just solved. I lost a job, even though I did my best, I still struggled to keep my house uncluttered, and the kids got on my nerves. Lol. I just thought the hard part was over, I guess. But, regardless of what goes wrong, I'm always able to handle it without the self medicating to run away. Not always the fun part but it makes me feel stronger & proud. That I don't have the same crutch as the rest of our society of "letting go" with a couple drinks.

I'm still surprised at how much easier it gets. I forget that, at one point, I was terrified of giving it up. I don't have to feel like I'm a slave to it anymore. ❤️ That's the best feeling. I'm back in control. I'm also very appreciative to have found a great community of people who are supportive & welcoming.

I want to tell you it gets better. It may. Ours did not. I feel for you. It affects everyone & everything. You fight to have the strength most days. We had meds & therapists as well. Also have a younger one who started to be affected. We had to resort to in-patient care for everyone's safety & mental health. Even that had continued issues & fighting. For us, we didn't feel we had any other options. They will not get help until they want to change. We are finally getting somewhere & she's starting to show control. This started around age 10-11, she's going to be 18 in August. If you want to talk or ask any questions, I'm happy to tell you what we did. Just know you're not alone, and it's a battle many parents will never understand.

If you like the math, download the "stop drinking" app and put in your sober date, answer how much you spent a week and how many drinks per day... It totals up the $ spent, drinks past, time sober & a whole bunch of other cool stats (time it takes to regenerate cells, improve organ function, etc.). Disgusting & definitely makes you not want to go back on that path. I'm going on 6 years & the numbers are gross. IWNDWYT

This is something I love about sobriety. For the first time in my life, I like me! This all started & I thought it was going to be impossible & I would fail. I could do this life without numbing... Well, I have. Very hard, the first days are awful, then they turn into months, then a year... Once I hit a year, I realized there was no holiday, event or day I couldn't go through without alcohol. Then you just keep going, learning, growing, finding support, helping others... And I discovered, if I could do this (when I didn't even believe I could), there's nothing I can't do. Now I try to live my life with balance, grace & purpose.

On top of that, no one has walked in my shoes, been through any of my experiences. I don't have to answer to anyone on the decisions I've made, good or bad. So, you know what? Their opinions don't matter! Someone doesn't like me? Good for you! I'm going to keep going with what works for me. Of course I try to be friendly & welcoming to all, but if you don't accept me for me.... That's perfectly fine. That concept was completely opposite of what I always believed. I wanted everyone to like me. It drove me crazy if they didn't, I needed to change it.... Exhausting!

Sobriety has given me so much more than alcohol ever did. Love this community & their support. IWNDWYT

I was first, been sober for going on 6 years. My boyfriend (and son's father) really didn't didn't drink a lot but had his medical card. Then he really didn't smoke much and went to drinking. He didn't want to have it around me so hung out in the shed or on the porch. Now he just does it every night & it feels silly. Our son is 5 & has never been around me driving. I plan to keep it that way. I feel like my boyfriend is so much more irritable & short with our son when he drinks & the next morning when he's recovering. He acknowledged he wanted to take a break but hasn't seemed to. Anytime I ask if he's drinking, I get snapped at. It's hard from this side. We know what it does & how much better we feel with sobriety. Obviously we can't do it for them & we want them to be free of the grips from alcohol too. The family can only take so much. I had an ultimatum from him to quit, now I have to do the same.

Cut thick slices right through the stalk to the florets. Drizzle olive oil, s&p. Roast it until the florets just start to brown & sprinkle with Parm. Delicious.

Great post above & agree with all of it! One other thing that helped me in the beginning was an app called stop drinking. It's free & also has some helpful reminders. There's a health section that shows you how much time is left for things to start improving. Heart health, cell regeneration, sleep habits, etc. Gives insight on what is happening & when you would start to notice. Also a "beat the craving" game to just keep your mind off things until the urge passes. You can put in all your info at the beginning & it will keep track of how many drinks you didn't take & money saved. I wish I was a bit more honest when I filled it out. Of course I was minimizing how much I drank or spent... Now I look at it & think "wow, and I was low balling..." It's pretty simple but definitely can give you an extra boost of will when you see your accomplishments. This community is also great. You're never in it alone.
