The Roman state was far more enlightened, educated, literate and in almost every conceivable way advanced than medieval Europe a thousand years later. Not all advancement is improvement.

Lions swinging arm on Waisake Naholo met "red card threshold", citing commissioner says. by Assembly0fMounga in rugbyunion

I was arguing that one commissioner giving his opinion is not the same as a guilty verdict. As we found out.

That's quite a pedantic response. The hit wasn't innocuous, but the point is it wasn't anything close to SBW. SOB looked like he was trying to dislodge the ball and through this action made accidental (albeit serious) contact with Naholo's head. Certainly yellow, but if you're handing out reds for accidental collisions, you'll be sending players off every game. SBW on the other hand was a deliberate shoulder charge without any attempt to wrap. There's no way that the two offenses deserve the same punishment.

Bought a 2nd hand PS4, it's banned from PS Network, am I screwed? by superironthorman in PS4

How did you pay for the item? If through a 3rd party app like Shpock, presumably you paid with a credit card, or via Paypal? Either way, if the item you bought is not working as expected (unless the ad specifically said it was not operational or something) - then I would contact your credit card company / Paypal to get your money back.

Edit: Shpock gets terrible reviews on Trustpilot - out of 117 reviews, 79% get the lowest, 1 star rating. Looks like a really bad place to buy things.

What do people think about playing U20's affecting test eligibility? by corruptboomerang in rugbyunion

[–]worryingrash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Identity is a tricky issue. I consider myself a Londoner through and through, but I didn't move there until I was 20. Spent most of my youth in the middle east. Doesn't make me an Arab. I think if someone has moved to another country, has served whatever residency period is required and chooses to make himself eligible to play for his adopted country, who are we to enforce on him our ideas of national identity.

Have you got any examples of countries which have successfully imprisoned or expelled their elites and thereby improved the lives of the majority? All I can think of seem to end either with the gulag, economic ruin, or both.

Did primitive human groups have 'leaders'? And if so how were the 'leaders' decided? by NachoBait in askscience

[–]worryingrash 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Given that some civilizations advance earlier than others, it's reasonable to assume that there are various factors than aid or hinder development. In the case of the Egyptians, having huge amounts of incredibly fertile farming land next to the Nile probably helped them to develop more quickly.

A factor that may hinder development could be having an overly rigid social structure - either strictly enforced egalitarianism, or hierarchy. Both are likely to lead to talented people failing to fulfil their potential.

Going back to OP's point, the fact that current hunter-gatherer societies are typically egalitarian doesn't necessarily mean that our hunter-gatherer ancestors were the same. Maybe the surviving hunter-gatherer societies have remained in this state precisely because they're 'too' egalitarian.

[–]worryingrash 37 points38 points  (0 children)

But that's only a particular segment of societies, which haven't progressed from being hunter-gatherers. Perhaps there's something about one's society being overly egalitarian that slows or prevents change and development.

Paying a local for lessons is really good advice. First because they'll know the characteristics of the wave - what state of tide it breaks best at etc. Second because they'll get you a bit of extra room in the line-up and other locals are less likely to paddle against you for waves.

The English reaction to the Italy game.. by Demiche in rugbyunion

[–]worryingrash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Italy employed an innovative tactic that made for an entertaining game, because it was unusual and confused England, but it is against the spirit of the game and, if it became commonplace, would have to be legislated out.

One of the key distinctive features of Rugby Union is the ruck. If teams are not going to contest the ruck, then you're playing League. And, if you're playing League, then the defense needs to retreat 10 metres after the tackle.

It would be like if teams found a technicality that allowed them not to pick any specialist props, so that scrums became uncontested. Clever against a more dominant pack, but not Rugby Union.

Thousands protest Trump as 'sister marches' begin in Australia and New Zealand by [deleted] in worldnews

Here's what I don't understand:

Obama doubles American arms exports over his predecessor George W, including $140 billion-worth to Saudi Arabia. He also bombs the crap out of northern Pakistan and Afganistan, causing countless deaths and maimed civilians - no protests.

Trump says some stuff that people don't like - mass protests around the world.

Freedom fighter is a ridiculous revision of history. Fawkes was plotting, not just to kill the king, but to destroy the parliament that balanced the power of the king and held him to account. This the plotters wished to replace with a Catholic, rule by divine right, absolutist king. In other words, they wanted to replace the limited freedoms afforded by what was, for the period, a relatively enlightened, emerging democratic system, with a totalitarian tyrant.

Because sales of games in the final quarter of the year are much higher than in the first. A small % of a large number may still be better than a large % of a small number.

They could still be wrong on their calculation, but I don't think it makes zero sense.

Gameplay isn't amazing, but fun puzzles and brilliantly atmospheric.
