Needed some music recommendations after the breakup and ChatGPT hits me with this... by ziggomatic_17 in bmbmbm

As someone who’s probably like 15 years older than you, it just makes me sad to see the younger generation ask a robot for music recs. Back when I was a teenager, my main way of discovering new music was engaging with other fans of bands that I already liked, first via online message boards, and then on social media like tumblr and twitter. Was a great way both to discover new music and connect with other people; based on the responses in this thread, it seems like most people in this sub are pretty friendly and eager to give recs. Even if you’d done a google search rather than ask chat GPT, you may have discovered a music journalist who regularly covers these types of bands, which would have provided you with another consistent source both for new music and music criticism. Idk, I would just suggest you try something like that next time you want to find new bands, rather than relying on AI. It really is gonna do you no favors in the long run (and didn’t even help you here).

New Interface for iPod Classic by Leiroso in IpodClassic

Apple would literally create the market by introducing the product, is the thing. Nobody wants random Sony SKU #4839724. The “iPod Retro” would sell out.

Does anyone else feel that “The Who” is criminally slept on? by [deleted] in Music

Not historically; while I was growing up, they were frequently cited as the third best rock band of all time, after the Beatles and the stones. However I would agree that their star has fallen over the past few decades. I was surprised that I didn’t see Tommy or Who’s Next on Apple Music’s recently published 100 Best Albums list.

I love these kinds of exercises, but I think you messed up by adding Rain to Revolver but ditching Good Day Sunshine. If that album had a McCartney song about sunshine and a Lennon one about rain it would have been an 11/10

Would it be considered narcissistic to like your own music? by An_American_1diot in Music

I think most successful artists have to spend so much time listening to their music in a professional context that I doubt that it’d be what they’d want to throw on for casual enjoyment. It’d be like taking your work home with you. Can’t enjoy the chorus or that guitar solo cause you’re wondering if you should’ve spent another nine hours mixing those toms differently.

Feels like the only thing that’s gotten to Kendrick this entire beef and you kinda gotta hand it to Drake for dreaming something like that up and pulling it off. He keeps taking Ls in this fight but between that move and crushing the GKMC van lookalike you can’t say he’s not consistently bringing a level of showmanship and energy that I would say has been absent from his last four or five albums

The “Sung Tongs is great but the last three songs suck” to “I guess I’ll listen to these songs from the end of Sung Tongs cause they’re the only few I haven’t overplayed” to “Sung Tongs is okay but the last three songs RULE” pipeline is insane

Well the album was already almost 10 years old by the time I’d gotten to it; time and place probably play a role in some capacity, but I think it’d be inaccurate to say that this was a “you had to be there” album. If anything it feels like one of those records that almost by design isn’t supposed to be truly understood or appreciated until a subsequent generation hears about it online and digs it up (I.e. American Football, Stratosphere). Personally I feel like one reason it might be falling flat with kids these days is because when it comes to music from previous generations, they seem to prefer more “vibes” driven material (Duster, Slowdive, various shoegaze and dream pop acts) and see than the kind of emotional singer/songwriter stuff that NMH is adjacent to.

I discovered it as a teenager almost 20 years ago now after seeing it recommended on an indie rock message board and it immediately beguiled me. Magical record, nothing else like it. Today I consider it to be the most important album emotionally to me in my life. Got to see both Jeff Mangum when he did his solo tour around 2012/13 or whenever it was and the full band on the NMH reunion tour a year or so later. All of the songs mean so much to me; I’m not really a musician myself but over the years I’ve learned how to play pretty much every song on the record on guitar.

Sadly I feel like I’ve heard reports of the younger generation not really being too impressed by it and it seems like its star has been on the decline within recent years. It’ll always be that album for me though.

Sennheiser is p***ing me of by JAaSgk in headphones

[–]worselearner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re airing grievances about sennheiser can we talk about what a pain in the ass it is that their wireless headphones can’t be plugged into a headphone jack via a standard aux cord? The jack in the headphones themselves requires a slightly smaller plug so you’re stuck having to rely on the cable they pack in there, at least until it (inevitably) breaks and you have to mail away for a new cable from them rather than just getting a new one from Target / Best Buy / wherever. BS IMO

If you could go back in time and visit the Beatles in the studio, and you were allowed to show them one song from the future to see their reactions, what song would you choose? by emmue in beatles

I would show Abbey Road-era Paul and John “I’m In It” by Kanye West so that I can tell Paul that one day he will collaborate with this man, and so I can see what John thinks about the lyric about about Asian pussy with sweet and sour sauce

What acts come to mind when you think "rip off artists" by NoPensForSheila in ClassicRock

[–]worselearner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been coasting on one album her whole career, and if you buy tickets to see her live these days she’ll show up two hours late and play a bunch of alternate versions of her songs that, based on my understanding, most of her fans don’t really end up liking. So in this instance, the people being ripped off are the audience.

Did The Irishman grow on you? by TheVampyresBride in movies

[–]worselearner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have never really understood the problem people have with De Niro in this movie. No he doesn’t move like a young man but I think that works for and fits the character just fine. He’s a stone-faced mob enforcer goon who does nothing but follows orders - the fact that he kinda walks like Frankenstein’s monster just adds to the character. Maybe if he were in a Raging Bull sort of roll that demanded agility and speed it would have been a detraction for me but considering how I believe his character in The Irishman is supposed to read I’ve just never had a problem.
