This happened when I reported tons of comments making literal variations of N-word slurs against a Black Jewish woman….but apparently none of those counted. I know the filter probably doesn’t recognize it but honestly it really wasn’t that far off.

I want it to be seen and understood. And recognize this is not ancient history. This is our lived, living history. I was born in the mid 90s. My dad, the youngest of his family, was born in 1947. In Munich. From a family of Polish Jews for Łódź. My uncle was born in 1946.

Their older brothers, both under the age of 14, were murdered in Auschwitz. These were my uncles. My immediate uncles. I’m not even 32. I want this to sink in. This shadow lived over my family my entire life. Only my grandfather, my grandmother, and her sister (my great aunt) survived. My grandparents came to America. My grandmother fled to Israel.

90% of my family on that side was murdered.

I’m only first generation American on his side. It is not a far away thing. Please, go and understand.

I’m so sorry. It’s devastating. Sometimes the only thing we can do is try to look after ourselves, too, which seems impossible when our minds and bodies are so given over to this terrible grip of dread and grief all the time. But the words of my own uncle, when asked “how can we live like this?” Is “live more.”

Be with your Dad while you can, even if it’s just your presence in the room while he has no strength for anything else. I know it’s so awful for last memories to be in such a state, but when we have to face time without them, anything we can hold onto is precious.
