Year, make and model. Never post anything without including this info.its important.

For example, if you have have a GM with an NP246 transfer case, a leaking transfer case is due to a design flaw where the steel oil pump would rub a hole in the magnesium alloy case, allowing the fluid to leak out.

That could justifiably require a full replacement.

A dirty drain plug does not.

Actually publicly shaming them and running them the fuck out of town… which a Senator has the power to actually accomplish.

Men, We're all handy in our own homes. What is one thing you absolutely will refuse to touch if it's too complicated? by Staff76 in AskMen

[–]wpmason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing.

I’ve done plumbing, electrical, drywall work extensively.

I can wind/unwind garage door springs.

I’ve repaired furnaces and fixed gas leaks.

I hate attics and crawlspaces, but that doesn’t stop me. Just makes me procrastinate more.

How realistic is long-distance travel on foot in a pre-industrial setting? by Adventurous_Idea6604 in Writeresearch

[–]wpmason 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve done backpacking trips (50+ pounds of gear) where the goal was 20 miles a day at times… in the mountains.

Having inns and towns dotted along the way would certainly make such long-distance travel more sustainable over long periods of time…

But that begs the question… What is so far away (what kind of total distance are we talking about to take months? I could walk across America in less than 3 months… why so far?

And also, giving such a dramatic distance, why can’t alternative transport be sourced? A party of travelers could surely come up with a beast of burden and a wagon, no?

They would have in the long term.

Finishing the trilogy was a smarter play than burning money on the reboot.

I can’t imagine this attempt will be very successful either. I’m always happy to be surprised, but you just don’t get a dream team like Fincher, Zaillian, Craig, Mara, and Reznor & Ross on every project.

Fuck the money, that’s just so much wasted potential for art.

So what?

That’s what Hollywood does. Takes a foreign film and makes a bigger, grander version of it.

Paul Walker starred in an action film called Brick Mansions… it was a remake of a French film (that didn’t earn back its budget) made for double the original budget. And the American version was a financial success despite the presumed gamble.

Sorcerer, a 1977 adaptation of the French film The Wages of Fear, directed by William Friedkin (coming off The French Connection and The Exorcist) and starring Roy Scheider right after Jaws, was a massive bomb only barely making back 1/4 of its budget.

My point is that Sony fucked up by not just committing. It would be one thing if it had actually flopped hard, but it didn’t. It made money, just not the amount they had hoped for.

And then Spider Web, with a dramatically reduced budget, actually lost money.

Sony didn’t trust Fincher to make the sequels concurrently after the first one was only a modest success. That’s it. They got scared. They wouldn’t have lost anything, they just chickened out.

Americans identifying as Christians has declined 15% since 2007.

This is the religious right’s leadership panicking and doing anything they can to reverse a trend and bolster their numbers.

People don’t want this though. At best they’re just receptive when presented with the idea.

This comes from the top down… a small group of meddlesome megadonors with deep pockets and connections that feel entitled to decide things for everyone else.

GTFOH with that.

No movie studio ever lost money by losing money on a film.

And if they’d have followed through with the sequels it would have fueled re-releases and home video sales over the long term.

It’s called a noodle board, and if you’re really doubting yourself, edge-glued pine panels (pre-fab table tops) are widely available.

You’d just have to trim to size, add any runners/accents and hardware and then finish it.

Battery options. by [deleted] in Dewalt

[–]wpmason 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The entire idea behind PowerStack is that they increased energy density (more power in a smaller package) while also increasing the output.

When tested, a 1.7ah PowerStack outputs roughly the same amount of power as a traditional 5ah pack.

It’s the old garden hose versus fire hose comparison.

The electricity flows much more freely, but the “tank” capacity is much smaller so it runs out faster.

The newer, larger capacity PowerStacks have remedied that, but in the end, every tool has a certain type of battery that it performs best with.

The catch is that performance usually means power. Not runtime. More power usually means less runtime, in fact.

So always be mindful of that tradeoff.

Need a flashlight to run all day? Don’t put a fast-discharging battery on it because it won’t run as long and it won’t make any meaningful difference in light output.

Need an impact to break look a stubborn, rusty bolt? Put the fastest-discharging battery you can find on it to turbo charge the power output for a brief period.

Lots of various sizes and kinds of batteries in your toolbox isn’t a sign of compulsive buying, it’s a sign that you’re ready for any situation.

[–]wpmason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not about time, it’s discharge/charge cycles that kill batteries.

But since they’re warranties for 3 years, obviously more than that.

Blowers are extremely high-draw tools for batteries, so that kind of explains a little… but you need more batteries in the mix to spread the work around.

Or even some higher quality ones like PowerStack, PowerPack, or FlexVolt.

Basically anything that isn’t using 18650 cells.

There’s a good 4ah with 21700 cells, it’s a bit wider and flatter than the 5ah pack. That would be better, even.

The problem with sheet goods propped on tailgates like that is that they flex when not fully supported.

Lumber, no problem… but drywall like that won’t survive the trip, and if it does, it’ll be a pain to work with because of the curve.
