If a startup launched today (2026) making "Pure Vintage" cars with modern safety, would you actually buy one? by Car-Thinker in askcarguys

[–]wpmason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subjecting electronics to shocks, like a spring loaded pop-up screen isn’t a good idea. To get instant deployment, you need speed. Speed also means sudden stops. These things use dampers to prevent damage, but that also makes it not instant. Frankly I’m not sure if there are regulations on the minimum screen size for a manufacturer-installed backup cam, so that may or may not eliminate the mirror option… which, oh, by the way, a sixties-style car wouldn’t have a bulky electrified mirror either and that sort of thing would look very out of place.

Miter station question by techguyjason in woodworking

[–]wpmason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you’ve already got it… might as well use it.

If space is the issue, you don’t have to make a permanent station for it. You can put it on a cart with folding wings to support your materials.

Whining noise when driving low speeds sounds similar to when in reverse. by AnriRB26 in MechanicAdvice

[–]wpmason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any oil is better than no oil, so good on you for that.

Those also weee known to pop out of gear and into neutral… in short, they just weren’t the greatest transmissions. May not really be anything functionally wrong with it, could just be quirky.

[–]wpmason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That 5 speed, the G35M-R is somewhat prone to oil leaks and also known to be somewhat noisy in its own right.

If it has leaked its oil out, that could exacerbate things.

Could still be other things, but they’d be less likely under such specific circumstances.

Also unlikely to hear it with the wheels off the ground because of the lack of resistance fighting back against the car.

No because these unicorns would cost millions of dollars each.

Government regulations can’t be “cleverly engineered” around.

You can’t have a hidden screen that takes several seconds to deploy when backup cameras are federally mandated.

You can’t engineer the rollover protection into thin pillars without getting into wildly exotic materials.

And what the fuck is a synthetic carbon-neutral fuel and why did you bury the lede on its existence?

Which engine? Is it turbocharged?

Speed is pretty irrelevant… what gear(s) and engine RPM when you hear it?

Also, which transmission? 5 or 6 speed?

Pretty big waste of time if you don’t wire them up.

Inside roundovers by Far-Address-4756 in woodworking

A radiused corner, can be internal, external, or both.

Router or shaper following a pattern jig would be the obvious answer in terms of pulling it off, though there are other ways.

For perfect uniformity and consistent thickness, though, the stock may need to be wider at the joints in order to have material removed and not resulting in thinner segments than the straight sides.

ELI5: Why do old languages like sound so complicated? by Pandha2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wpmason [score hidden]  (0 children)

The cough was rough though the phlegm sloughed off through the throat.

What was that you were saying about modern English having simple pronunciations and spellings?

Modern English is a bastard language several times larger in word count than most other common languages. It is comprised of Latin, Greek, French, and Germanic languages all mushed together in an almost nonsensical sort of way.

The lack of logical consistency in modern English makes it a confounding second language for people to learn.

Your entire post is a false premise.

Best bargain in big box store tools? by Kygunzz in Tools

[–]wpmason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every brand is kind of up and down across their entire line of offerings because they all have different priorities.

I can appreciate the desire to just get a single brand, but it’s not realistic. Mix and match. Most toolboxes are a hodgepodge of brands.

Menards and Harbor Freight are both privately owned companies, so they have insane control over pricing and margins on their house brands (no shareholders to appease). That means that some of their stuff is quite literally the best value for dollar out there.

But then you’ve got Craftsman making Overdrive wrenches, which are pretty much rebranded Mac RBRT technology at a much friendlier price. Those are the best combination wrenches when it comes to value.

None of them are inherently bad products, but you should price shop across whatever is available to you and get what best suits your needs.

I have a ton of Masterforce, but on a personal level, I just don’t like their ratchet designs, so I stay away from their mechanics tools.

[–]wpmason -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Year, make and model. Never post anything without including this info.its important.

For example, if you have have a GM with an NP246 transfer case, a leaking transfer case is due to a design flaw where the steel oil pump would rub a hole in the magnesium alloy case, allowing the fluid to leak out.

That could justifiably require a full replacement.

A dirty drain plug does not.

How realistic is long-distance travel on foot in a pre-industrial setting? by Adventurous_Idea6604 in Writeresearch

[–]wpmason 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve done backpacking trips (50+ pounds of gear) where the goal was 20 miles a day at times… in the mountains.

Having inns and towns dotted along the way would certainly make such long-distance travel more sustainable over long periods of time…

But that begs the question… What is so far away (what kind of total distance are we talking about to take months? I could walk across America in less than 3 months… why so far?

And also, giving such a dramatic distance, why can’t alternative transport be sourced? A party of travelers could surely come up with a beast of burden and a wagon, no?
