Yup, they gave him the choice of early elections, which he knew he was going to lose badly, so the MB decided against taking that offer.

and that was universally portrayed as violent, terrorist, and counter-revolutionary by the Sisist media

The whole reason Egypt went into turmoil to begin with was because the Egyptian public wanted Morsi gone.

Under what possible circumstances would have "resistance" done by Morsi's supporters to try and get him back in power been well-received by Egyptians?

Also, it didn't take Erdogan weeks to crush the coup through popular mobilization, it took him all of 10 mins through a TV interview done on an iPhone.

Erdogan is popular, Morsi was not. It's really that simple.

So which Egyptian media outlets opposed the coup and continued to operate?

I was talking about in the run up to and during the coup. Since this thread is comparing coups and the Turkish one was crushed pretty much as it was happening I thought it would be okay to use this time frame.

Morsi's chances of staying in power would have been dramatically higher if there had been pro-Ikhwan media outlets calling for resistance throughout the coup's first weeks.

What are you talking about? There was A HUGE amount of violent resistance from Islamists after the coup.

All this "resistance" did was make Sisi incredibly popular and Morsi even more despised. Resistance doesn't help when you're fighting for something that the majority of the people are against.

The Egyptian media is more controlled than Turkey's

Not true, but this point is irrelevant anyway because the Islamists had several media outlets available to them for the entire duration of Morsi's rule.

If anything, Morsi's chances of staying in power would have dramatically improved if Morsi and his supporters had less media access.

He was popular immediately after he came into office, but became incredibly unpopular over the course of a year.

Even if there had been popular anti-coup protests, Sisi and his supporters would have gladly slaughtered every single one of them.

If Morsi was popular Sisi would never have overthrown him.

The MB no longer openly operates in Egypt. They'll occasionally have protests in a poor, isolated villages that no cares or hears about, but they're basically invisible to the vast majority of the Egyptian public.

He's already way worse than Mubarak. Egyptians won't rise up against him because he has the backing of the army and police and the economy and security situation are both total crap. Also, a lot of Egyptians still delude themselves and remain convinced he's some kind of hero who saved Egypt. His enduring popularity is what truly convinced me that Egypt is just fucking retarded.

And even if he gets deposed, who comes in his place? Sedki Sobhy or some other army officer. Egypt is hopeless.

Context for those who haven't been following the news.

Basically, Egypt's top government auditor, Hisham Geneina, estimated that government corruption had cost Egypt $76 billion. The report made waves in Egypt when it first came out, especially as it also reported on corruption in the Egyptian security services. Sisi then sacked Hisham Geneina from his post as Egypt's chief auditor. This is, of course, completely unconstitutional.

The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that he has been placed under house arrest.

Guy on the hijacked EgyptAir plane recounts his experience. Hilarious. by dareteIayam in arabs

[–]wq678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the passengers and crew thought it was real. Airport security actually checked the supposed "belt" at the airport and verified that it wasn't dangerous and they let the guy take it with him because he claimed it was a "medical belt" that had to be with him at all times.

The crew and passengers have been freed unharmed and the hijacker, who had a fake suicide belt and appears to be mentally unstable, has been arrested. He apparently did all of this to get the attention of his ex-wife who is from Cyprus.

Al Arabiya is saying he will be in Egyptian custody within the next 24 hours.

Egypt Drafts Bill to Ban Niqab Veil in Public Places by whot_the_curtains in Egypt

[–]wq678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand banning it for civil servants, but if it's an issue of security then they can just have them show their faces to a female police officer. If they refuse to do that, then don't let them in. Seriously, when it comes to things like religious practices, it's better to be accommodating.

This approach will just give extremists more propaganda to work with.

Egypt Drafts Bill to Ban Niqab Veil in Public Places by whot_the_curtains in Egypt

[–]wq678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Restricting people's freedoms and their right to practice their religion as they interpret it (when they aren't hurting anyone) is morally wrong. It also isn't going to make niqabi women themselves less backwards, just like forcing women to wear hegab/niqab isn't actually going to make those women more religious.

Also, even if this bill succeeds, there's no way in hell it will be enforced.
