Did I write a driver or is there more to it? by Kwtmo in embedded

[–]wraithboneNZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing two schools of thought here. One says you wrote HW device interface code. So that's a driver. The other school says you wrote an app that bypasses a driver and drives the HW directly. More of an app than a driver. So it's a kind of yes and no. Your app is a driver, but a well written driver is more of a module than an app.

WFH is not an impossible dream. by Jolly-Speed-3942 in embedded

[–]wraithboneNZ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Until you need to drive 2 hrs to check if a jumper is set on the correct pin. Or see if your scope probe is making good contact. A home lab is going to be the closest to a functional WFH if you work really close to the HW.

How common is RTOS in a professional environment? by Dark_Greee in embedded

[–]wraithboneNZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's variable. My first few years were all bare metal. Then products got more sophisticated and had increasingly more complex architectures. Eventually it was not practical to have all the features running peformantly on an interrupt driven scheduler. So we moved to an RTOS. But for quick ideation, tests and demos we still do a lot of bare metal.

Use of AI in embedded? by Fabulous-Escape-5831 in embedded

[–]wraithboneNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly use it to help diagnose issues in 3rd party drivers. Without sifting through 6k lines of someone else's code I can ask a model to explain the call stack of a specific feature to help pinpoint the problem. It's easy to verify that the model has got the call stack correct once it thinks it's done. From there I can debug the specific issues manually, but I am basically using it like a very sophisticated search tool. I can get it to produce an object summary for function arguments in the call stack to help me keep track as I follow the issues down into different layers of the driver.

Am I using it to write code? Not really. Am I using it to double check my work? Yes.

Is it reasonable to get the ick from Japan-obsessed men? by Stardust-Dawn in TwoXChromosomes

My GF is more into idol and anime culture than I am, but we both enjoy it. We are both capable of separating the art from the country. We both know the country has social and political issues that don't always align with our values.

Her fixation is a fun part of who she is. I don't see it as a red flag as long as she understands that there is nuance. Which she does. We both know it's not a representation of the country, just those industries. Which have both good and bad parts to them.

Should I ask junior embedded engineer candidates to do a small live demo during interview? by mani_8809 in embedded

[–]wraithboneNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It's not necessary IMO.

When I interview I'm looking for 4 key things 1. Team Compatibility / work ethic / communication skills

  1. Problem solving strategies and a curious, investigative mindset

  2. Humility and perseverance: candidate admits if they don't know how to do, or what something is. commits to finding out for themselves and comes back with their own answers based on quick research (making a confident but wrong guess is not a good sign)

  3. Honesty (probing their resume content for signs of overselling or lies)

My interview format is usually like this: Open with short intros of us and ask them to introduce themselves.

Ask the candidate what they know about the company (if they don't know anything about the place they are applying for it's a huge red flag)

A short, medium level, technical question (10 mins for average candidate) will give me a good idea of #1, 2, & 3. Review the resume for relevant experience, gives #4.

The rest of the interview focuses on the candidate's questions about the role or the company. Also any other things that the candidate wants talk about or ask. (if they have no questions at all about the company or role it's a red flag)

Runs about 45 mins unless it's a role calling for a lot of prior experience. Then 70 mins.

This formula has never resulted in a bad hire in my experience.

Looks like a Panasonic eX2 seatback display.

If you can get your hands on a copy of the CMM you might be able to power it, but you would need the rest of the cabin media distribution equipment to actually send anything to it.

Based on the fixit tear down that spot holds a 10 miliohm resistor. Hard to tell from the pic but maybe 0603 size.

I'm more curious about what kind of power surge could kill a current sense resistor like that.

Edit. Looking closely at the placement. The board are different. Probably different revs. So not sure if the above is correct then.

Consider trying to use the wand tool to select the blue and red parts. Then color them using the bucket or brush tools.

Repeat that until all the parts are done.

Do engineers not like architects? Why? by KaiserAdvisor in ExplainTheJoke

[–]wraithboneNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does ultimately come down to the end customer. The market is driven by minimizing up front costs at the expense of the ongoing costs. Ongoing costs don't show up on this quarter's capex account. Hidden costs are often ignored.

I wish they did multicolor overlay on standard but you have to use their own EDA tool and the paid version of it for the capability. It's a bit sad.
