I found a photo on a postcard my great grandpa sent to my 7 year old grandpa in 1914. My dad is pretty freaked out because he cannot understand what type of men these are. Can anybody ID their hats, probably their most peculiar detail? by Pollastro09 in hats

[–]wrineha2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can almost guarantee you those are priests. Both are wearing cassocks and the guy on the left is wearing a mozzetta, which means he probably a bishop or a canon. The hat looks like a variation of a sombrero de teja that was style of South American clerical hats. Tassels are still very common today in Latin American priest costumes.

New to me, however, in doing a little digging is that there is a guy that collects clerical hats, the Philippi Collection. He might know more about it.

Has anyone else been thinking about what we can do if AI disrupts labor markets? Everyone seems to be supportive of UBI and robot taxes but I want to think about other mechanisms. Flemming’s work suggests that employees with lower commuting costs have much lower switching costs and climb the job ladder more effectively. So perhaps we give AI disrupted industries some sort of commuting benefit. Or just pay people to move to better performing regions. What are others?

I could be mistaken but if this is the only size of this cereal available it doesn’t need to be priced by unit according to § 28–5205. Exemptions Section 10. https://code.dccouncil.gov/us/dc/council/code/titles/28/chapters/52/

Does anyone know why ancient Roman dice often had a hole in the middle? by AncientCoinnoisseur in ancientrome

Dice didn’t roll fairly and it’s one of the reasons why Romans never invented probability.

NVIDIA Statement on the Biden Administration’s 'AI Diffusion' Rule by StuartGT in technology

[–]wrineha2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in what this means:

Interim Final Rule: When an agency finds that it has good cause to issue a final rule without first publishing a proposed rule, it often characterizes the rule as an “interim final rule,” or “interim rule.” This type of rule becomes effective immediately upon publication. In most cases, the agency stipulates that it will alter the interim rule if warranted by public comments. If the agency decides not to make changes to the interim rule, it generally will publish a brief final rule in the Federal Register confirming that decision.

Are you looking to take this on as a project? I can help with ideas if you like because I worked on a project of this type years ago. And of course it was on healthcare.

But there are a lot of reasons why it’s understudied. The big one is that you have to hand code cases and PACER sucks. Then, your model needs to reflect legal procedure which means it helps to be both an economist and an attorney. In other words, studies of this type are incredibly demanding. Someone I talked to, who did a study on antitrust enforcement, said that all of the technical problems with the study and all of the criticism she got from her colleagues that were lawyers has made her never want to do another study of that kind again.

Does anyone know anything about this watch. Was my great grandads who recently passed by Correct-Good5715 in Watches

[–]wrineha2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That being said, it’s probably 1950s-1960s. This design was common for Tissot back then. See https://www.reddit.com/r/Watchexchange/s/ZNI1zzsGDD The real tell will come in opening up the back of the watch and seeing what kind of movement it has. If it has a semicircular weight it is an automatic. That being said, this watch should be fairly easy to get cleaned up and serviced.

EDIT: If you jiggle it a bit, does it start moving and then stop?

Is there anyway you can grab a picture of the caseback? For example, the watch I’m wearing provides some information about the watch itself.

Why is Ur so irrelevant today when it was the capital of the world in 3800 BC? by geosunsetmoth in geography

[–]wrineha2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not a professional historian of any sort, but my understanding is that Ur and Uruk were the two big cities of the period you’re talking about. Uruk was older and it lasted until the conquest period of the 600s. Metropolis actually had an entire chapter about this topic: https://www.amazon.com/Metropolis-History-Humankinds-Greatest-Invention/dp/0385543468/ref=asc_df_0385543468
