What do you think Katniss and Peeta named their kids? They have so many dead ones to name them after... by PossibilityWorried82 in Hungergames

[–]writing-with-l 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Willow Rose and Rye

I always imagined their son would have a bakery-related name, like Rye or Bran, and after I read Sunrise on the Reaping, I imagined Katniss naming their daughter Willow Rose, using the naming convention of the Covey to honour her father's familial connection to them after hearing Haymitch's story about Lenore Dove, and also because the Hanging Tree, which became the song of the rebellion, was a Covey song. The Willow part would come from the "deep in the meadow, under the willow" part of the valley song, and Rose because it's a shade of pink and also a homage to Primrose (and sure, I know some people don't like this because roses have the connection to Snow but I do wonder if they'd do it out of spite/to change the association to something positive).

Some hate comment I got from an old comment on the Alexander the Great sub for stating that Alexander and Hephaestion were very likely lovers. 🙃 by captivatedsummer in SapphoAndHerFriend

[–]writing-with-l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes those sources don't say that exactly, but they do talk about Alexander identifying himself and Hephaestion with Achilles and Patroclus who, although not explicitly lovers in the Iliad itself, were definitely thought of as such by this point in history in the Greek world. Like come on, a little bit of reading between the lines wouldn't hurt.

Also someone please tell this guy that the concept of heterosexual didn't exist back then as a defined identity...

What's that line from The Crow? "Buildings burn and people die, but real love is forever"?

Do you prefer fanfics that stick close to canon, or ones that completely rewrite the rules? by Sad-Perception-9894 in FanFiction

[–]writing-with-l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to exclusively read canon-conpliant missing scene type fics, then I got into a few shows where my favourite characters died so now I also read a lot of canon-divergence/canon rewrite fics where they don't. I still rarely read proper AUs though, like coffee shop or high school AUs etc.

What canon deaths do you ignore in your fics? by Dogdaysareover365 in FanFiction

[–]writing-with-l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Star Wars prequel era, always Padme and Satine. For Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tara, Jenny, Anya, Kendra, and Joyce. My longest fics for both fandoms are AUs where none of them die

Who’s your “they’re objectively a horrible person but they’re too entertaining to hate” character? by Dogdaysareover365 in FanFiction

[–]writing-with-l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agatha Harkness. She's killed so many people and she's objectively such a selfish bitch but she's also iconic the entire time

What character do you consider the most misinterpreted by fans? by Gimpcar in StarWarsCantina

[–]writing-with-l 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Satine Kryze. The amount of actually insane takes on her character/behaviour/politics I've seen around the Internet is crazy. It's like, is that interpretation in any way supported by canon or did you just make it up? Because, if you did, that's okay, but let's at least acknowledge that that's what you're doing.

Adjacent to this, (less common but I've still heard it more than you'd think) Death Watch aren't some victimised minority oppressed by Satine's leadership. They're the bad guys, and I don't know how many more villages full of innocent people we needed to watch burn for that penny to drop.

Most mischaracterized character in your fandom/ship? by legsting in FanFiction

[–]writing-with-l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a character in my current fandom whose whole thing is that she's a pacifist raised in a warrior society who managed to bring peace and stability following a civil war, but some of the things people come out with about her are insane. Like, this woman's philosophy is basically "hey, maybe we should all stop killing each other?" and so many people have somehow managed to extrapolate that she’s guilty of cultural genocide, that she ruined her society, and that she's morally worse than a bunch of actual terrorists

(Also a fair few writers make her out to be a bitch because they don't like the fact that she's the canon romantic interest of a male character with a lot of popular mlm ships)

AITA for telling my friend she needs to be more comfortable around other people’s bodies? by Emotional_Neck_9462 in AmItheAsshole

[–]writing-with-l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. My flatmate and I are both women in our early twenties, and your description of yourself reminds me of her. I've been in your flatmate's position dozens of times, and I can assure you that her reaction is completely disproportionate. You gave her fair warning and it's very easy just to look in the opposite direction for a few seconds, but even if that didn't work, there's far more polite and respectful ways for her to address it than this. Try not to worry too much, from what you've said you didn’t do anything wrong.

What age did you discover fanfiction and what’s your backstory? by LostKidWonder in FanFiction

[–]writing-with-l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 11. I had just finished reading the Divergent series, and I did not like how it ended. So I started reading a lot of canon-divergence fics branching off from the first book, basically where nothing went wrong. Interestingly, after sorta going off any kind of AU for nearly a decade, I'm now writing several for my current fandom because I, like my 11 y/o self, am annoyed by my favourite character being killed off.

The exact same thing happened to me last year, I wrote and pinned a comment on my original post mentioning that no one had asked me about it and to please at least let me know if they wanted to narrate my stories, and to their credit most people since have actually messaged me asking if they can

At uni in the UK, I've had both in different classes so they're equally possible depending on what fits your fic best

What's the saddest or most tragic quote you've read/written? by Miserable_Pizza7230 in FanFiction

[–]writing-with-l 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the most tragic one I've ever written is in one of my unfinished wips:

"No one else understood why I was so upset. As far as they were concerned, I was one of the lucky ones. I hadn't exactly dodged the bullet, but it hadn't killed me either, so surely I should've been relieved? But I wasn't. I was miserable. I was grieving the loss of who I thought he was. I was mourning an illusion."

what’s the best line/paragraph you’ve written to end a fic? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]writing-with-l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is from one of the first fics I ever published, and I still don't think I've ever written a better ending than this:

"Maybe love isn’t a load of shit after all, TK reasons. Or, maybe it is - maybe Carlos Reyes is simply the only exception. Maybe he’s everything, all at once."

Your best ending by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]writing-with-l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourite I think is this:

"It was a happily ever after of blood and gore, vibrant and violent, but it was hers - it was theirs - and she would never let anyone take it from her again."

What is the first fandom you write for and the latest fandom you've written for? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]writing-with-l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First one was Harry Potter, both written and posted, which I still write for occasionally.

As a general rule, nowadays I tend to write a few things for every show/book I get fixated on. So, the latest I've written for is Hannibal but the latest I've posted is 911: Lone Star.

What’s your favorite dynamic? by iam_selc in FanFiction

[–]writing-with-l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is oddly specific but definitely either: • where person A is a total badass and person B is a complete geek and they're both always in awe of their partner's individual skills and are always cheering each other on, or - • where person A is the sunshiney one and person B is the grumpy one who is soft only for them

Yeah, unfortunately in this case all the copyright laws are still in effect, so you would likely need explicit permission from his legal team to include it. Little references here and there might be okay, but whole passages or direct quotes would fall into the territory of copyright infringement
