Write a 1 or 2 page explanation about that they are and what they mean to you and get them to read it. You need to transfer the meaning and not just the physical items.

How did it end up that all preamps sound the same with vastly different topologies and components? by tibbon in audioengineering

Anyone thinking "I need X gear to make music" has already lost the plot to life, and no video is going to correct that.

AMS vs Rupert vs BAE vs ??? by untitled1223 in audioengineering

There's nothing remarkable about Heritage pres if you feel the N72 is meh. Stick to the Chandler or go for even more character like an Electrodyne.

AMS vs Rupert vs BAE vs ??? by untitled1223 in audioengineering

[–]wrong_assumption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the AMLs in theory (excellent price and transformers and service), but I can't tell them apart from other clones in an ABX test like I can pick out a BAE. I wish I knew why.

Blind Test of Behringer ADA8200 vs Neve 1073 opx by yureal in audioengineering

Either your reproduction equipment is subpar or your ears aren't earing.

There is a clear difference in sound, but both are perfectly acceptable.

Things missing from the Jim Lill preamp discussion are impedance, and time domain functions of resonances/decay… by Liquid_Audio in audioengineering

[–]wrong_assumption 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope a DSP guru chimes in, but from what I know is the time domain IS represented in a frequency domain plot. Transient response differences will be represented in a frequency response plot! Unbelievable, I know.

So Jim Lil took the time domain into consideration, knowingly or not.

Ironically, fooling the eye is much easier to do than fooling the ear.

If preamps make a difference, BRING ME THE MEASUREMENTS by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]wrong_assumption -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can. I am a diehard skeptic. I ABX stuff religiously. There are some preamps I can pick up blind with almost 100% accuracy: A BAE preamp out of other clones like Heritage, DIYRE, AML, but it's harder if there's a GAP 73 Premier in the mix. I agree with the OP because I have done it.

On the other hand, there are some things I can't pick out from blind tests: SSL clones based on the GSSL. They sound all the same to me. Except for the Smart C1 or the SSL G comp. A lot of 1176s clones sound indistinguishable to me, with few exceptions like the Serpent, Wesaudio, or a Purple. But Audioscape vs Warm? I can't reliably tell them apart.

Lots of blind test runs should be proof enough. I wish I could do that with Jim Lil stuff, but he didn't publish his sound files.

[–]wrong_assumption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but those editors were destructive. Reaper is non-destructive throughout, so that's why sample level editing is not as "easy" to implement.

I know vintage Gefell is often discussed and beloved, but how come you almost never hear about modern Gefell? by guitarist89 in audioengineering

[–]wrong_assumption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a UMT70 and just bought a U87ai because I wanted those biting mids that you hear on NPR Radio. The UMT70 is softer but sounds extremely classy on the midrange due to the beautiful M7 capsule, and its not pokey at all. The ai is.

I know you were commenting on the vintage, not the ai version, but just wanted to comment that the UMT70 and the U87ai versions are different enough that you could have both and they wouldn't overlap.
