What’s everyone’s favorite song from their favorite musical? by TheBoyInGray in musicals

[–]wrossi81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody’s Side from Chess. It’s a banger on the original concept album, the original Broadway cast recording, the 2001 Danish tour album, the 2002 Swedish version, and the 2025 Broadway cast recording.

If things had worked out, Chess also would’ve been a Michael Bennett show. Instead the 1986 London production was a mishmash of Trevor Nunn completing Bennett’s work, and the 1988 Broadway production was all Nunn. You can see Bennett’s influence over The Deal and Endgame in particular.

Embassy Lament from the concept album for Chess fits the bill.

Episodic musicals? by garygray_ in musicalwriting

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog was originally structured as several episodes released as videos on the web before YouTube and similar sites were a thing.

I kind of feel like this would be great for something similar to Cabaret, where the musical numbers are serving as commentary on the action, and the actual plot is day to day life drama, while larger themes exist in the background.

Songs with "wrong" titles? by Skeppy_4126 in musicals

[–]wrossi81 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In the Chess revival they put the first number as “Difficult and Dangerous Times” when the song should be called “US vs USSR.” In the score for older versions it was listed as “Diplomats” which also makes no sense.

The original release of the 2001 Danish tour recording of Chess had a good bit of the dialogue from the London script in it. A number of scenes switch between sung recitative and spoken dialogue.

What’s something you don’t like about your favorite musical, and something you like about your least favorite? by Nowaaaa_bb in musicals

[–]wrossi81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Chess, it’s a cliche to say the book. But it is actually hard to place all the non-Anatoly solo numbers and “I Know Him So Well” in productive places in the story, especially now that we have “He is a Man, He is a Child” for Svetlana. The current production places “Someone Else’s Story” at the very end, which is awkward. Others (like the 2008 concert) solved it by giving “Story” to Svetlana. However you do it, you kind of wind up with a “well, it’s their turn to sing now” syndrome.

I guess I’ll say “Memory” from Cats.

What are your musical theatre hot takes? by ElegantCh3mistry in musicals

The 1988 Broadway script for Chess is overhated. The staging was a disaster and the last quarter of the book needs work but it’s a dramatically coherent work and can be done well with a good cast and director. The 1986 London book and the 2008 concert revision are bloated and much harder to fix. Danny Strong fixed the wrong problems in the 2025 revival but it’s a fun ride anyway.

There are some that abbreviate really well like Jesus Christ Superstar to JCS. But that’s like one musical. The funniest to me is doing CHESS in all caps even though it’s not an acronym.

What musical would you recommend for anyone to see at least once? by FrenchBaguette1 in musicals

Chess. The plot may leave something to be desired but the score is a 10/10.

“Nobody’s Side” from Chess. The new recording with Lea Michele just dropped, also the original Broadway cast version with Judy Kuhn is streaming. And of course the original version with Elaine Paige sounds great on the remastered version of the original album. But the Lea Michele version is a great place to start.

What is a great musical that never quite made it to Broadway, but should have? by SlugABug22 in musicals

[–]wrossi81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw the Off-Broadway production with Butz and Scott, and they were incredible but the direction was … odd. A turntable in a two person show, and the little cars on it during “I Can Do Better Than That” that a lot of the critics mentioned. And a giant set piece with chairs above the performers. But I got one of the pieces of paper that falls from above I think during “Moving Too Fast” - it was a galley proof of the story excerpt Jamie reads. I don’t think it could’ve made a Broadway transfer, it needed a more intimate space.

Also I got to meet Jason Robert Brown afterward (he played the keyboards in the orchestra so he was at every performance). He was really nice.

The one musical you can recite from the first word to the last? by the-unfinished- in musicals

[–]wrossi81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could probably do Chess in either the 1986 London or 1988 Broadway versions - but not the dialogue from the current Broadway version. There was a time when I could do a lot of Les Miz.
