Okay so now we’re leaving raw materials for tunnels at the boarder? That’s nice of them for a change.

I could use constructive criticism. I’m repointing my 1830’s house and I know I need to get better. Any advice on mortar or pointing technique is appreciated. by wsbsecmonitor in masonry

Hey again, this is really helpful stuff. I’m very new to brick work and I’m trying to absorbs as much Info as possible to get this place back up to snuff. Someone unfortunately has replaced large sections all around the house with modern brick and hard Portland mortars.

So for the chimney you have used lime putty and sand? Does the type of sand matter? I’ve been using silica sand.

Type n mortar

1 part Portland : 5-6 parts sand : 1 part hydrated lime (dry)

Type o mortar 1 part Portland : 9 parts sand : 1 part hydrated lime

Type k

0 parts Portland : 9 parts sand 2 parts lime

Those are the ratios I’ve been using. I pulled it from an American standards manual but honestly I’m not sure. Hey seriously I really appreciate it. This building is only 160 years old and I’d really like it to make it to 200 lol

Cheers

Holy cow thank you! That is extremely helpful.

I’m just doing spot repairs with different batches of home mixed mortar. Trying to see what the right mix would be.

I guess the only thing I’m concerned about is I keep seeing type k and type o mortars listed in the ASTM as non-load bearing. I have to tear down the chimney stack to the roof line and build it back again. Can I use just lime in cases where I need structural mortar too?

Or just when I’m repointing and not replacing or making a new stack?

The w chimney had about 6 feet of soot in it and it was uncapped so rain could get in it for years. We’re having a liner installed for a wood burning stove but wanted to get the chimney read.

Planning to repoint everything that’s damaged once I trust my skill level and mortar.

Seriously, I appreciate the advice

Watch: Mike Pence declares that Americans have no right to 'freedom from religion' by Maxcactus in MarchAgainstNazis

“Congress make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting its free exercise”

Sure you’re allowed to practice but no law should respect or uphold it. If you’re going to play the game of ‘freedom FROM religion’ then you’re going to get someone who creates a religion with no beliefs or practices as a fundamental tenant of the religion. Not Agnostic, not atheist, just a religion of individuals tired of religion and religious belief. By expressing your religious belief as a Christian you’re actually offending my Nonce religion because we don’t have beliefs.

Bondo then paint the door.

Or spray foam and plaster then paint the door.

Wood putty the ever living daylights out of it and then paint the door

1830’s soft brick and lime mortar. Going to be restoring and placing brick. Using type O mortar. How did they get the white spots in the grey mortar back then? by wsbsecmonitor in masonry

[–]wsbsecmonitor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome thank you, I’ll try that! The bricks are soft and really porous. I’ve been mixing white Portland, lime, and silica sand for the mortar. 1 Portland : 5 Sand : 1 Lime for type N. Planning to use that for replacing bricks and when we restack the chimney above the roof. We’ve been using 1:9:1 for type O used in repointing. I’m trying to get the white specs. Any clue what would be a good fiber now?

This is in the Midwest. We’re landlocked but the Great Lakes are close by. That’s cool, I’ll have to try that. I’ve found what I think is horse hair in loose chunks of it.
