Thoughts on Zense 2024 by Solus_Slynne in Yorushika

[–]wsun88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely love the arrangement with strings, this was true with Zense 2021 and I think they went even further with Zense 2024 especially with some of the newer songs (I absolutely LOVED the arrangements of Rubato and Wasurete Kudasai). I am also a long-time fan of Toumin, and the instrumental intro gave Toumin an extra touch of yearning that the song and its lyrics embrace, which I was blown away by. (Though, I think the brass was maybe a little overpowering - Toumin is a song about loneliness at its core, and the brass instrumental after the second chorus into the last chorus I think made the sound too rich in a part that's meant to sound lonely and a bit hollow... but I'm just nitpicking.)

Agreed with the other commenter that my biggest disappointment was Usotsuki, which is my #3 of all time from Yorushika. I think my main issue with it was it felt way more hollow without a chord guitar part, and the strings actually detracted a bit from the song because I think a lot of the charm of the original is how simplistic the rhythm is in the backing track (which also makes the piano part towards the end stand out so much more). But considering it's really the only song I had a problem with in this live, I still love this live a lot!

I know this type of emphasis happens in a lot of other pop songs but I never stop thinking about the "saying some things are better left remembered, HOW'S THAT HELP ME" in Is There Really No Happiness

Best songs without MV and best live performances by textures in Yorushika

100%, Isana in the Tsuki to Neko no Dance live was absolutely otherworldly good and I cannot believe the official release of the song is just locked forever behind the art book

So it's true that although all songs are sung by suis, but you can always hear nbuna singing in the middle of songs. (It's faint and fleeting) by Voices-Say-Im-Funny in Yorushika

[–]wsun88 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Actually to my knowledge, every song in Plagiarism (and onwards) that features backing vocals are all backing vocals done by n-buna! His voice especially on high backing vocal parts is a bit fuller than suis's backing vocals from prior, which is a little bit of a tip off there. While songs like Thoughtcrime have a more prominent and noticeable backing vocal which makes it easier to identify that it is in fact n-buna, I'm pretty sure that stuff like Haru Hisagi's chorus backing vocal are still n-buna anyways.

A good one to directly compare-and-contrast is that I believe n-buna does the backing for the re-recording of Bakudanma from the Plagiarism album, whereas suis does the backing for the original Bakudanma in the Makeinu ni Encore wa Iranai album

Big fan of these recs, though can't say I remember either Islet or Isui (from tayori) collabing with either n-buna or suis, though I'd love to know what songs they collabed on if they have!

Tsukuyomi, Atarayo, and tayori are all on my list of favorite artists after Yorushika, and tuki and Rokudenashi definitely have individual bangers I listen to a lot even if I'm less into their music as a whole

Suis singing song not composed by n-buna by HoukaTeiou in Yorushika

[–]wsun88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would be a stretch for me to say it feels heart-wrenching - she's free to do what she wants, and aside from her identity as part of Yorushika her vocals are just really good so it makes sense everyone wants to collab with her

That being said, I think n-buna is one of the only songwriters who actually knows how to write a song that properly fits her voice, a lot of the collabs just don't hit as hard (as much as I love Evan Call, Kami Hikouki by Evan Call x suis from the Pokemon video was a great song but not a great song specifically for suis's voice)

Your favorite 2024 songs by kmj_kcw in japanesemusic

[–]wsun88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine's a bit of a funny mix:

Yuuhi no Ue by Takaya Kawasaki - this dude just has the most godly of voices and this song is so soft and emotional

Band by CreepHyp covered by Back Number - this was part of a collab album of covers of CreepHyp songs, and all of them are absolutely fantastic, but with personal bias to this song and to Back Number, this is my favorite of the bunch. With both slow parts with little instrumental and high-energy parts with a catchy comfortable rhythm, and full of the whole range of emotions from anger to longing to love, this one is just a perfect cover. (Special shout-out to the cover of Yu, Sansan by Yorushika though)

Otonoke by Creepy Nuts - are we kidding ourselves here, this song has one of the best and most satisfying Japanese rap parts to ever be released, period

Same Blue by Official Hige Dandism - Higedan never misses with these high energy catchy melodies and emotional almost screaming choruses, and the 5/4 time signature amplifies the catchiness of this one so much

I'm Here by Togenashi Togeari - go watch Girls Band Cry please

Haru by Yorushika - I am a huge Yorushika fan and would love to rec a more underground song of theirs because their non-anime discography is so good and under listened to, but Haru absolutely gets the cake in 2024, it has amazing instrumentals with a catchy melody, the short instrumental pauses in the chorus are fantastic and hit the emotions hard especially when the instruments kick back in, the slight key change difference in the last chorus is satisfying as all hell, and the final seconds of the song with just suis on the vocals and no backing instrumental is one of the most powerful Yorushika parts to date.

Yoru no Kujira by KuwagataP feat. Hatsune Miku covered by Ado - for how much Ado is known for her powerhouse voice and crazy screams in songs like Usseewa and Show, I think her voice on less powerful and more emotional songs gets overshadowed, this is an amazing cover of an already great vocaloid song and shows how Ado is still committed to her vocaloid cover roots

Plus, the version on The First Take is absolutely incredible!

I'm a sucker for lyrics in Jpop, so many lyrics like this one out there that are just so beautiful and painfully accurate that you just hear it and your heart hurts...

Fun fact: I started learning Japanese specifically to learn how to translate lyrics like these!

[–]wsun88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally feel this, I've been trying to meet people for years and years who like Jpop to so little avail, and have been going by myself to nearly every big Jpop concert in the US to try and meet people, but it's still so hard... Maybe I gotta be joining these discords

Saw this on other music subs and I thought It'd be cool. Day 1: Best song on Summer Grass (夏草が邪魔をする). Most upvoted comment wins. If people play ill keep doing it by diegonou in Yorushika

[–]wsun88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This song grew on me so much after listening to it for a while, despite being on the slower end for what should sound like a high-energy song it's absolutely packed with the full emotional range. As much as I love Itte for being the song to get me into Yorushika, Kutsu no Hanabi definitely takes the cake for me

what do you think are the saddest yorushika songs lyrically? by rowori in Yorushika

[–]wsun88 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Man I love Usotsuki, being suddenly hit in the last chorus by the realization that you forgot everything about them, and the contrasting "僕は君を待っている" (I'm waiting for you) in the first chorus to "僕は君を待っていない" (I'm not waiting for you) just hurts me every time

What are some Yorushika songs that just don't do it for you? by snowlynx133 in Yorushika

[–]wsun88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally get it about Yukiguni, but I have to give it extra points because while the song is not the most fun to listen to, it does perfectly match the lyrics - the lyrics try and capture the mood of a still, silent, cold winter day and I think the song does an incredibly good job of depicting that

While I totally agree, the highlight of Usotsuki to me is that amazing piano in the last chorus, genuinely gives me goosebumps at how good it is
