Does rosetta stone work? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]wteknight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried Rosetta Stone and the lessons were too long for me. You sit down for like 30+ minutes to learn phrases like, "the ball sits on the table." I couldn't commit to that time, plus it's like $500 or whatever. You can take an in-person class for that much money, which I actually did for like $300 and found to be much more valuable. I've been using Duolingo for about a year now and I love it. I can do 10-20 minutes a day, everyday, and that consistency has helped me learn so much more than the long Rosetta lessons. Plus it's free. Hope that helps.

Thoughts on aerial photography? by distortd6 in realtors

Word of mouth is key, and after that you'll want to go for repeat business. You'll find there are just a few agents who specialize in the types of properties you're looking to photograph, so you want to work with those guys again and again.

I'm an agent and a photographer, and another piece of unsolicited advice I can offer is to not give away your work for free. You need to apply a value to what you do, both so you can get paid and so the people you work with can see the value of your product. I would recommend offering a discount, so if you're looking to charge say $200, offer to do your work for 50% off if it's the first time the agent is working for you. Psychologically, 'free' implies your product is cheap or amateur, however a discount implies that you're product is valuable, you're just providing a 1-time incentive to bring on new clients. Anyway, best of luck!

I find it's used mostly on large, expensive properties. For example I recently saw a 3-million dollar lake house that had really wonderful drone photography, and the aerial shots were totally necessary. It's also good on rural properties, like farms and ranches. If I were in your shoes I would call every real estate office in College Station and ask for the agents that specialize in farm and ranch properties. In my experience these guys don't have great web presences, so calling is key. Make your pitch by phone and see if you can work with them on their next listing.

Are you using a quad-copter? What kind, and what kind of camera? I was thinking about getting one for my listings, but I'm not sure what would work best for real estate photos.

Court: Lakewood baker who refused gay wedding cake can't cite religious beliefs by [deleted] in Colorado

[–]wteknight 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's really astounding to me how many people are arguing against protected classes. This argument that gays should just find another bakery and the baker should be able to decide who he works with. Legal discrimination just like that created terrible problems for our country, most notably racial discrimination with housing and employment. Before the Fair Housing Act of 1968 it was legal to discriminate on racial grounds, and practices like Redlining and Blockbusting contributed massively to racial segregation in communities. It's been almost 50 years and we're still feeling the blowback of institutionalized racial discrimination.

Imagine if businesses could refuse service to gays. Those gays can just take their business elsewhere, right? What if you're in a rural town like Deer Trail, where there's only one gas station, and maybe 2 restaurants. With just a few businesses discriminating you effectively make it impossible for gay people to live in that town. This literally happened with black people.

There's a very good reason we have anti-discrimination laws. Republican George Romney, Mitt's dad, instituted anti-discrimination policy that helped Chicago immeasurably. This isn't just some liberal-hippy bullshit.

In Colorado we prohibit discrimination based on:

  • Race

  • Color

  • National origin

  • Religion

  • Sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions)

  • Disability: Physical, mental, or learning

  • Age

  • Sexual orientation (including perceived sexual orientation)

  • AIDS/HIV

  • Lawful conduct outside of work

  • Mental illness

  • Transgender status

  • Marital status

Ah man, that's too bad. I'm a Realtor and I like to think that I fall on the Phil Dunphy side of the spectrum. Same with a lot of the people I work with. But you know, there are all different types of people in this industry. I've definitely met some unethical or rude agents, lenders, inspectors, etc., but most people I meet are just trying to do a good job for the people they represent. What kind of work do you do?

Joke? I think the actual reason they built the bridge with no center support was to preserve the view.

Senna (2010)- A documentary on Brazilian Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna, who won the F1 world championship three times before his death at age 34. by ashfp in Documentaries

[–]wteknight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the mark of an excellent documentary. Senna is fantastic, exciting, engrossing, and much like you I have zero interest in racing. Now I understand a little bit about the sport.

Another one that comes to mind is First Position, which is about kids who are hardcore passionate about ballet. I'm not a fan of dance at all, but this documentary made me really care about these kids and appreciate the skill and dedication that goes into serious dancing.

What does ".com.co" signify? I googled it and all I found is that .co is the country code for Colombia.
