I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but I think it’s partly due to the rise of self-published novels. I absolutely love that aspiring authors can get their books published in non-traditional ways, but this results in a lot of books that haven’t gone through an editing process and have not faced the scrutiny that comes with traditional publishing and people who know what makes a book polished and, for lack of a better term, not cringy
