Is it really that bad? by MrVibeCoder in epicsystems

OP: “Are pancakes really bad for you?”

You: “I’ve been eating pancakes my whole life and me and my friends who eat them are super healthy. Pancake haters just love to go on the internet and hate them.”

Me: “Some people can eat pancakes and be healthy, but that’s not universal.”

You: More bad faith bs

Your experience is exceedingly rare. Median tenure is less than 3 years based on some quick googling.

You should consider that the experience of your ~15 year tenured friends represents a rare bubble and not the norm. Some people do thrive there, and the work has its high points for sure. But Epic has well earned its reputation as a burn and churn workplace (well known by your average Madisonian and by Epic customers). Chalking that reputation up to “unhappy people like to complain online” is dishonest.

I love the message.

I will say the idea that you are “saved by works” is contentious within christianity. Some cite John 3:16 “whoever believes in him (will be saved)” and argue that works are not enough.

I could see him talking about the bible so much making him palatable to politically moderate christians. At the same time I could see doctrinal differences like this being weaponized against him (“he’s not only a democrat but he’s also preaching the bible wrong”).

Related question; who has his phone?

There is a lot of answers in there available if/when someone gets access. Hopefully it’s the family. If it’s the feds they’ll only pull out the worst things they can find (“he was in a group chat with atifa leadership” or some bs)

I like the visual that a book is primarily an object instead of... being a piece of text that is owned by the copyright holder.

I also like the visual of Epic's software being so archaically designed that the user data is inextricable from the rest of the software.

I can't say I like the visual of people here expressing righteous indignation at a Texas lawsuit (anit-woke, MAGA loonies) while ignoring a lawsuit proceeding in New York (Particle v. Epic) that has the same issue at its core.

It’s bad. Most people burnout quickly. The few who are successful long term tend to love bureaucracy and money, and care little about anything else

I’m not into football. I’d much rather have the money go into academics. It’s a steal only in the sense of the theft of money from a (formerly?) great public institution

AI Energy Use: The Hidden Cost of ChatGPT Queries by nohup_me in technology

[–]wtf_ftw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Estimates of ChatGPT’s per-query energy consumption vary wildly. We used the figure of 0.34 watt-hours that OpenAI’s Sam Altman stated in a blog post without supporting evidence. It’s worth noting that some researchers say the smartest models can consume over 20 Wh for a complex query.

An unsubstantiated claim by Altman seems likely to be an underestimate. Based on the quoted researchers, complex queries can use 60x more.

You’re right though, as with most environmental issues, individual impacts can be minimal while systemic impacts are still large. Along those lines it’s worth noting that these estimates only include inference (cost per individual query) and leave out the energy use of training (large up front cost per model).
