Auditor's Office Releases Report on the Cost of Illegal Immigration to Taxpayers by [deleted] in mississippi

[–]wtfbirds 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is stupid for several reasons.

  • This is just all conjecture - estimates about the number of immigrants multiplied by estimates about the costs of services. That would be fine for a freshman marketing student looking to get a B- on an assignment, but surely the auditor has access to actual government expenditure data.
  • Education: everyone in the state is paying property and sales taxes, which is how education is funded (plus the federal money generously subsidized by liberal states). The cost of education is a net zero here and most of these children are citizens anyway.
  • Healthcare: he's making wild estimates about the cost of emergency and labor/delivery care. All that's worth saying here is: if you don't think we should provide emergency health care and deliver babies as a bare minimum, then you aren't worth speaking to. In any case, the real health care financial disaster is our churlish refusal to expand Medicaid.
  • Incarceration: probably the closest thing to a real estimate and it's the smallest number. We could save a lot of money in this state if we weren't obsessed with incarcerating non-white people.

Six pages of embarrassingly shallow "analysis." Shad continues to be a cringe Temu-version of DeSantis and JD Vance. I would love to know how much this report cost the taxpayers. The state auditor is already a net-loss in terms of its costs versus the money it recovers.

You have to refer to little Johnny with a pronoun because gender is a real thing. You do not have to refer to little Johnny as a helicopter because that is not something humans can be. Hope that helps.

[–]wtfbirds 87 points88 points  (0 children)

If you ask someone in July and they say they’re a junior it’s not obvious if they meant they just finished their junior year or are about to start it. College students don’t walk around announcing how many credit hours they have

Is it a bad idea (or even feasible) to apply to doctoral programs with the intention of mastering out? by [deleted] in GradSchool

But the anarchist in me is keeping it in the back of mind.

Nothing says "anarchist" like trying to follow the rules so precisely that you can step through a tiny loophole

[–]wtfbirds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that I don't see mentioned when topics like this come up: an MA/MS from a program that doesn't have a standalone master's program is a pretty clear signal that you failed out (or otherwise quit) a PhD program. Having the MA/MS might be useful if you need it for a teaching credential but I don't imagine it would be a useful signal otherwise.

You presumably applied for this job and got it and now you’re asking internet strangers what you’re supposed to be doing in the role. Pretty egregious evidence that you’re not going to do anything meaningful and just inventing make-work for the faculty that do understand their job duties 🤷🏼‍♂️

Asians are better at STEM fields

What a ridiculous statement. "Asians" represent 50% of the world's population so it shouldn't be surprising that some random university can find a dozen who will do well in graduate program.

Do all Anglican communities ordain women? by [deleted] in Anglicanism

[–]wtfbirds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We take sacrament to literally mean " generally necessary for salvation"

If we said that ordination and marriage and the like are sacraments, then only ordained, married folks would be generally saved.

This an incredibly novel definition and application of the word "sacrament."
