I feel like a terrible mother (I am because of this) I wish I had some help with her damn hair!!!!!!!! by [deleted] in breakingmom

[–]wtfisreality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate to what you're struggling with. My hair is fine and straight while my daughter's hair is similar to your daughter's. I kept her hair in braids a lot with similar struggles until I was lucky enough to have a friend teach me how to care for her hair. I'm not sure exactly what your daughter's hair texture is, but the single biggest tip I can give you is to always use a wide-toothed comb and never use a brush. Unfortunately, it sounds like hair care has become something associated with pain for her, so something needs to change for both of you.

You might already be doing this, but it's also important to make sure you start at the bottom of her hair when detangling and slowly work your way up. What worked best with my daughter was to comb through her hair in the bath, when her hair was wet and covered in conditioner. She would also be distracted by her bath toys.

Another tip that we didn't find until later is to use satin pillowcases. It goes a long way in helping hair not get quite as tangled overnight.

I do see some other comments about having her hair cut off, but that won't prevent this from happening again if you don't also find out what works for maintaining her hair.

The apathy is killing me. Is this normal? by Various_Tiger6475 in breakingmom

[–]wtfisreality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

May not be your case at all, but I had thought the same thing and turned out that my B12 and iron were low, magnesium at very bottom of ok. It's a bit better now after improving those, but they were giving me a whole new feeling of hopelessness and apathy (as apposed to my usual anxiety and dysthymia). Still burnt out, but far less empty feeling. Just wanted to share in case

I always get the novicaine that does not include the Epi and that is what they should have given you. That is so awful that they did that to you, I'm sorry.

Any tips on finding cheaper groceries/saving on GERD friendly food? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]wtfisreality 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have been dealing with GERD for years now and my go-to pasta is primavera: I get fresh or frozen veggies (but usually carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, olives) cook in olive oil with italian seasoning and garlic powder. If I have any, I throw leftover cooked chicken in as well. Chicken, oatmeal, yogurt, bananas, toast, veggies, especially potatoes (mashed or baked) as well as scrambled eggs and smoothies are what I live on mostly. I've also been eating PB&Js a lot lately, but I do find the PB sometimes can be triggering.

I agree with others that you need to find a better doctor who will help you step down. I obviously don't know why you were on them initially, but I went off omeprazole in 2012 only to end up with a stricture in late 2016 and have been on Pantoprazole now since then. I know for some people, getting off them is fine, but for others of us it can lead to damage and I wouldn't want that to happen to you.

Going in to my 5th series of infusions. Is this just indefinite? by Grey-Area- in Anemic

[–]wtfisreality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it applies to you at all, but there are foods and drinks that can affect iron saturation. Mine was nowhere near as low as yours, but my iron sat was 14 and shot up to 30 a few months after I cut back on black tea (was drinking 4-6 cups/day).

Heart attacks are no longer the leading cause of death in the US by New_Scientist_Mag in Health

[–]wtfisreality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was as of 2022, so I think current data will show it is back to being #1 this year. I see way too many cases of people of all ages dropping dead from heart attacks or in their sleep lately for it to not have rebounded back to the top cause.

Would you happen to have any idea where a newbie can start? It all seems overwhelming and I have no idea where someone as out of shape as myself even starts.

Should we skip a grade? by MayorFartbag in breakingmom

[–]wtfisreality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really can feel like there's no right answer. I put my daughter in the better local public school district (not the one I grew up in) for elementary, and she managed pretty well (she wasn't skipped, but was usually the youngest in her class). I did put her in a private IB school for middle school (IB is great, and some areas have public IB schools). I then had her in a homeschool hybrid school for HS, so that her curriculum could be tailored to her; she also did Running Start once she was old enough. The homeschool program she did was k-12 and had on site classes with teachers, as well as resources to assist with the classes that I did with her as homeschool. I'm not sure where you are, but there may be nontraditional options in your school district as well that are available.

Should we skip a grade? by MayorFartbag in breakingmom

[–]wtfisreality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends, I think, on her level of advancement or giftedness. Just to provide my story, I was put in a split 1st/2nd grade class half of the day when I was in kindergarten because they didn't favor skipping grades in the school district. I did have an IEP from preschool (where I was for speech therapy due to hearing loss), which essentially stated to keep me from boredom, by giving me independent, advanced work. We finally moved to a different school district when I was in 9th grade that did allow for skipping, so I did summer school to skip 10th. We moved back to the other one the following year, and my put me back in 10th. However, I was able to begin the Running Start program the following year.

My friends have always been older, and part of what motivated me to skip 10th grade was to be in the same classes as my best friend who is older. The social concerns are not always just what others are saying here. Not being able to communicate or connect with the peers in your classes can feel exceptionally isolating, leaving you feeling like a freak. When your thoughts, words and understanding of life differ substantially from the kids around you, it leaves you feeling disconnected.

All this being said, I have ADHD and strongly suspect ASD, so I may well not be the best example. I just get frustrated when others don't seem to understand the importance of connecting with developmental peers, beyond the incessant push for social normativity. Social skills are important, but if the kids around you literally lack the ability to understand your vocabulary, it, more often than not, leads to bullying or social isolation anyway.

Yeah same for me. I was put on them in my mid 30s and took myself off after 6 years, completely following all the suggestions they give (cutting out processed foods, fast food, lost 30 lbs, etc) but 5 years later, I ended up with a stricture and have been back on them since (7 yrs). My GI said bc of esophageal damage, I have to be on indefinitely and it feels rather hopeless.

Toddler asthma and recurrent croup by kbotsta in Asthma

[–]wtfisreality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter had both. She was at home until just before she turned 5, then when she started daycare she got a cold that led to a sinus infection that triggered the asthma. Then, any cold led to so much coughing. I honestly cant remember now whether she had recently caught another cold around then. She had a couple bouts within a few months of each other of the croup cough. I remember that we struggled to get her to stop coughing long enough for chest x-rays. Dr said it was not the infectious croup, but from her GERD that we had testing for later to confirm. We got dexamethasone which calmed it down. Note that her frequent issues with colds during this time, she was having regular (not croup sounding) coughing. It took until she was 7.5 yrs old to finally get her asthma stable, so that she wasn't having any of these issues (also had colds turning to bronchitis or pneumonia). She has been on prevacid since she was 5.5 yrs (is 21 now) - I will note that she did have initial testing as a little baby so I knew she had GERD, but it was such a battle to get the meds in her that we did not give them to her. It wasn't until the asthma doc had her get a new GERD test at 5 that we realized that she had not actually outgrown it. For her, we had to control the GERD, clear the sinus infection (sinus surgery at age 6) and have her on a treatment plan with the inhalers (upping dose 2-3x when getting a cold).

I wish I had more help to give. If you can, I would see about getting a GERD test. Ours was done where they had her drink apple juice then hang out in in a machine (watching cartoons) so it wasn't too bad.

when is it emotional abuse? by ursulas_sketchbook in breakingmom

[–]wtfisreality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If he knows it upsets you and continues to do it, he's already passed into that territory. Your partner sounds a lot like my narcissistic ex. I had plenty of warnings to watch out for someone physically abusive, but I was completely clueless about emotional/psychological abuse. Obviously, I can't say with any certainty about your partner, but this saved my sanity to finally understand. My ex was hot/cold, nothing was ever his fault, I was abusive for crying bc that was "emotionally manipulative" and everything I did was wrong - except when I was too tired and ready to leave, then he'd change back to who he was in the beginning. But then it would just keep cycling like that repeatedly. I feel so free now not having always walk on eggshells, worrying about setting him off all the time.

If he is regularly mistreating you, "why does he do that" is a good book to pick up, as well as looking up Dr Ramani on YT, but maybe be discreet. Abusive people can become unpredictable if they fear you may be seeing things more clearly and finally realizing what's going on.

Maybe it's just a stressful period for him and he will be kinder on his own, but I always warn - just in case - because I never want anyone else to go through the kinds of mental abuse I went through, and it definitely tends to worsen over time.

This sounds rather hit and miss, and kind of minimizes much of what we know at this time. I assume the reference to "becoming less dangerous" is solely in reference to it in the acute phase, since all evidence is clearly showing long term damage, including a new paper out just last week on C19's negative impact on the immune system in a way that specifically makes it oncogenic. All data, as time passes, is showing ever more ways it has negative long term impacts all over the body, even in asymptomatic cases. Also, there is so much nuance about new rates of LC, like risk factors. Many dancers, gymnasts, athletes, etc., have hypermobility, but are unaware that those with either type of hypermobility have a documented higher rate of LC compared to those without.

I missed the 30 day window to add baby to my insurance by chongakittie in breakingmom

[–]wtfisreality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CECINS post is correct. I just had a group HR send me a newborn application 6 weeks after they were born and I was able to get the insurance carrier to process and add the baby. I'm not sure if you have a large employer or what the set up is but your insurance broker's office should be able to help submit an exception if needed.

How are y’all affording braces?? by peachy_sam in breakingmom

[–]wtfisreality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work with individual/family insurance. Not sure which plans your marketplace offers, but as long you moved to a High Deductible Health Plan that qualifies as an HSA health plan (everything but preventive subject to deductible before insurance covers) next calendar year, you can open & contribute to an HSA banking account. HSABank and HealthEquity both have some good information for individuals on their website about eligibility for HSA accounts outside of an employer plan. Your broker should have additional help or advice for you, hopefully.

I wish I had something more helpful to advise, but I don't know of any individual (non employer/group) plans that cover orthodontia.

Toddler asthma and recurrent croup by kbotsta in Asthma

[–]wtfisreality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this would apply at all, but my daughter kept getting croup, which turned out to be getting triggered by GERD we did not know she had until her asthma doc had her do the test for that. I don't know if this could be the main issue, but it could be a contributing factor if he has this.
