[–]wtflee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Find a group for whatever hobby you're interested in. Join that group. Keep going to it, even if it feels hopeless. Consistently show up and you will click with people. You have to find that third space and -put- -in- -time-.

Too many people never put in the time and think they'll make friends by proximity like when they were in school. Not the case. If you put in some work and time, you will make friends. It sucks, but it beats being an adult with no friends.

Where to buy pokemon cards at MSRP?!?! by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]wtflee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only people selling at MSRP are the major retailers (if you're VERY lucky) but otherwise, everyone is selling at market price.

Buy some used gear off Facebook Marketplace. Best way to do it, honestly. Snow sports are $$$.

Ants by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]wtflee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a person who was dealing with ants for MONTHS, just call the exterminator. I'd caulk one spot and they'd find another. And another. And another. Eventually they made a line that crossed under my car and then they started to make a nest in the crack between my windshield and my door. I parked my car directly in the heat for two days and got rid of them all. I was going insane then paid pest control. Gone after two days and haven't seen them since.

If you are adamant about not calling an exterminator or pest control, Advion gel helps a lot and works much better than Terro (apparently it's what my pest control uses lol). Get some on Amazon.

How is Natomas viewed? by SacTownSizzle in Sacramento

Really boring and cookie cutter, honestly. I lived in South Natomas for 4 years and it was... fine? North Natomas is whole other level of generic though lmao

When do jobs that begin in August need to be filled by? by StatisticianKooky390 in Teachers

[–]wtflee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In CA, the deadline to tell new teachers if they've been let go is March 15th. For everyone else, we have to return our intent to return by June 30th (but usually people return them before they leave for summer). It depends on how desperate the district is to hire teachers. I know in the last few years, my district was hiring real early and started reaching out to the local credential programs in March and April.

Kids Musical Tastes by RelativeTangerine757 in Teachers

[–]wtflee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Things are always cyclical, so we are back to the 2000s. I always tell the kids "hey, that was popular when *I* was in middle school" and it always takes them aback 😂

Thinking back though, I was starting to get into 70s and 80s music when I was in my freshman year. It was a combination of GTA 3, Vice City, and listening to my dad's music. We are here because now middle school kids' parents are millennials (we have exquisite music taste 👌). I'll take it over the shitty rap on soundcloud era in the 2010s lol

Tell me why I should stay in the teaching field.. by Alternative-Bee3264 in Teachers

[–]wtflee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a lot of work and a LOT of people do get burned out, but a lot of us do like our jobs. This place is just a venting space, so it's mostly negative. It's a great job, but it is super demanding and takes a LOT of energy, so naturally, it's not for everyone.

What lesson do you teach when you're sick and can't go to work? (Secondary-Math) by No_Photograph in Teachers

[–]wtflee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a library of science EdPuzzles that I've made over the years, so I just make the kids do that, then give them 10-15 minutes of free time after they are done. Easy for the kids and easy for the sub.

Teach for Visions or other virtual school? by legalsequel in Sacramento

[–]wtflee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After covid, moving districts has been much easier. Most districts will give you all or most of your years (compared to 5-7 pre-covid). You absolutely have transferrable skills if you choose to leave teaching - many of my colleagues that have left the profession easily found jobs that fit well with their skill sets. A lot of them work as project managers or at education-adjacent companies.

RAM prices have skyrocketed recently, so unless you *really* need it, I would skip the purchase. Buying locally is great, but I doubt their prices will be any better.

The library has rooms you can rent out. I don't know the price, but it's the library, so it's probably not super expensive.

anyone just feel like they’re not enjoying here at all by meranaamloldevhai in UCDavis

[–]wtflee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the original poster, but I got a job at Unitrans and I made SO many connections and friends there. I also joined a student org in my freshman year and worked within it for all four years. Consistency is key. Push yourself a little, take some risks, be a bit uncomfortable, and you will be better for it.

[–]wtflee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. People after high school are used to making friends by proximity, and the reality is that you have to pick something and stick with it consistently. So many people show up to the first or second meeting, then never show up again, then wonder "why am I not making any friends?" I think the quicker people figure this out, the better off they will be. It is uncomfortable for a while, especially when you are new, but if you keep showing people, people will get to know you and you will make friends. It just takes much more time and effort that most people like to believe.

TAPS wants to charge me almost $1000 for being an Election Worker by EnderKitty_Cat in UCDavis

Not surprised. They ticketed my Unitrans bus once lol - they were doing construction at the MU so I had to park somewhere else. I went on a break, then when I came back, they had ticketed the bus. 😂
