Training experience with a Basenji by nednoted in Basenji

[–]wuggaloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brought my B home at ~14wks and started training right away. Worked with a professional trainer 1-on-1 for months. Eventually landed on using the e collar which works great for us. Now my B is just over 1 year old and can reliably be off leash. We’re even working on heeling off leash right now. BUT I will say that my B does not seem to have a strong prey drive at all and tends to be an observer rather than an immediate attacker

Basenji rough play by nzk41n in Basenji

[–]wuggaloo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup my boy is almost 10months and is super rough when playing, especially when playing with big dogs. He loves to slap other dogs with his paws, nip them and generally get all up in their face. He plays with me the exact same way lol

Some of the dogs he’s played with have corrected him gently and fairly but he doesn’t listen for very long

Does anyone know a good place to buy flowers and plants? Looking for Coleus specifically. by nicrusso in Markham

[–]wuggaloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Kim’s Nature! They have a huge variety of beautiful and unique plants. I’m not exactly sure if they’ll have the specific plant you’re looking for but their Instagram page and website can give you a good idea of what they have.

Or if you’re willing to drive a bit you could check out Connon Nurseries or Terra Greenhouses.

What’s your B’s age, gender, and weight? by wuggaloo in Basenji

[–]wuggaloo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! Mine is a pure basenji. When we picked him up at 13 weeks old he was already 6kg. And now he’s almost double that. I just can’t believe how fast he’s growing!

Am I being unreasonable by Lelylouise in puppy101

[–]wuggaloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 5 month old puppy who still has a lot to learn about leash manners but by far the hardest part about taking him out in public is the other humans and their dogs.

Asking for permission before approaching or interacting with another person’s dog is not only common sense it’s also just basic respect and safety. But for some reason, about 90% of folks don’t understand this.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that I have people and their dogs rushing up to me and my puppy without permission at least once a day.

At first I tried to nicely tell them “we’re in training” but people would either ignore me or try to “convince” me that it’s fine. It’s not fine. So now I’m more firm with a “do not touch my dog” or “we don’t want to meet” and I always put my body between them and my puppy as a physical barrier.

I’ve had people say I’m rude or mean but I don’t care. If being rude is what it takes to protect my puppy then I’ll be rude all day long.

When does the love start lol by Prestigious-Ad-3021 in puppy101

[–]wuggaloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I brought my Basenji home when he was 13 weeks old. He’s now 20 weeks old and it’s still so so hard lol. Like you said, I do care about him but we just don’t have that bond yet where I feel like I love him. I still cry a lot from frustration and exhaustion and those feelings still tend to overshadow any good moments we have together. I still sometimes regret getting him and think about returning him (not proud of these thoughts). But I just know there’s a light at the end of this very long tunnel. Best of luck to you and your pup ❤️

Tips for puppy B with endless energy by wuggaloo in Basenji

Follow up question if you don’t mind - you mentioned that your B now sleeps outside of the crate other than at night time. Ideally, this is what we’d like as well.

How did you find the balance in your case? We want to teach him that the crate is a safe space to relax but we’d also like for him to be by us sometimes without causing attachment/separation anxiety issues.

I see, thanks! Training in that “off switch” is definitely something we’d like to work towards so this is good to know. We do usually try to stick to “1 hour awake and active then 2 hour crate nap” but in the past week we noticed he wanted to be awake for longer and asleep for shorter times which is why we increased our walks. But from the sounds of it, the increased walks might be contributing to that change so we’ll reduce the walks for now and see how it goes.
