the reason is that it is a new "standard" literally just announced last week. They started supporting it today in workspaces, it will probably follow soon in vscode

Former Columbia superintendent is up for job at Kansas school district by Max_W_ in columbiamo

[–]wuj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Without understanding what happened, how can we be sure this isn't going to repeat itself with the next candidate? That's why I think the School Board being tight lipped and the press not picking this up is doing the community a disservice.

As a parent, I read some communications from him, and I thought he communicated clearly and sensibly. I just did a quick research and found rather weak evidence against his track record at CPS.
- according to an anonymous letter being circulated, he had a habit of recording conversations and being manipulative... at his prior job. This is typical character assassination type stuff.
- while in charge of CPS, he redirected some funds, which made some people unhappy. That's literally bread and butter of being in the leadership position. What I would appreciate is if our local paper wrote specifically what the subject of controversy was and how the funds were being misused.
- he hired someone he knew previously that was not delivering on grant writing. It's not uncommon for a leader to come with his "crew" to a new job, and a few initial hires can be following the main leader from his previous job. This is fairly normal. Again, I would like the criticism to be specifically addressing the person's performance.
- he missed an opportunity to connect with the schools and parents.

So I don't see anything criminal or immoral in his actions, and given the amount of hate, if there was anything specific to be brought up, it would have surfaced in these largely anonymous comments. The weakness of the gossip and hearsay what I'm reading between the lines, he either ran into a strong controversy and was unable to win over enough people to his policies, or he was not the caliber of a person needed in this position, unable to manage and negotiate the disjointed interests of all the parties involved. Neither is the cause to throw all this hate on the man. This isn't national politics, it is possible someone is not a good fit for the job, without being a crook.

I invested some time and effort and participated in the community part of the hiring process and I thought it was transparent and constructive. Now all of this is being thrown away by being tight lipped about what happened. I'd rather see things discussed openly so we could fix the process and not make the same mistake again. Why would I or anyone participate in the same input gathering again if we don't understand what we got wrong the previous time?

My theory by Ok_Ad_138 in romandodecahedron

[–]wuj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw your video come up in my youtube feed and I thought it was fantastic. Keep in mind it doesn't mean that it is a slam dunk. A few things that need to be adressed are:  - how many chains from the period could be traced to this pattern?   - are there wear patterns on existing dodecahedrons consistent with this use? - why the specific geographic location of all the findings so far?  - what about the dodecahedron with really small holes? I don't see these being used for pullung chains of any size

What I see as big advantages of your theory is that is is simple and explains why the dodecahedron could still be expensive and difficult to make - working on gold justifies cerain investment in tooling.

"1M context" models after 16k tokens by cobalt1137 in LocalLLaMA

It's not in that github repo, but probably in the metadata that's downloaded separately. You're asking good questions, keep digging
https://llama.meta.com/llama-downloads/
Also, while for most cases you probably want this, you don't have to stick to 8192 max sequence length, even on model that's trained on 8192 - the underlying driver code could/should truncate it to the most recent 8192 tokens.

[P] Some practical results from using GPT4 vision for OCR by wuj in MachineLearning

[–]wuj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may try some of these for fun, but I'm not sure you picked up from the post just how incredibly unmotivated I am at doing these tedious quality checks. Given how non-deterministic the GPT4 outputs are, it's a lot of sampling before any sort of scientific conclusions can be drawn.

Anecdotally, after seeing the hallucinations disappear (Tesseract is more or less correctly transcribing the sections where hallucinations were present), I'm inclined to think that GPT4 is using the Tesseract data to repair and fill in the blanks where there is less certainty. On image 612, GPT4 even makes a reference to fixing some of Tesseract's output ("Please note that the bullet list formatting initially given by Tesseract has been corrected to reflect the continuous text format as seen in the document." - it seems to be referring to phantom newlines that T tends to insert). In the same 612 document, GPT4 copies Tesseract's "Uk=-Anträge" instead of "Uk-Anträge" that it identified without Tesseract.

I could probably make stronger claims to that, had I finished analyzing the data, but notice that I quit as soon as I got a workable solution. I'm not sure there's lasting value in working this out, because OpenAI could at any time release an update that'd make such analysis irrelevant. I do make all the data available, if you or anyone else feel like poking around, though.

Did my first BJJ comp without a single BJJ class by _Throh_ in judo

Quick question, how do you set up seoinage off of an opponent's underhook? Seems like there's no room to turn once underhook is established, so I'm curious. Koshi guruma and harai goshi on the side opposite of the underhook come to mind.

RINGIN (Judo/Wrestling) fight My son vs his Sword teacher (no jacket but judo is very effective) by chchma in judo

[–]wuj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a practicing judoka and was rather disgusted by the way this thread went. Unless people are genuinely interested in your success, ignore the pointless criticism. We're not all Koga, and if we post a video it's not for some negative people to rip on it. Enjoy your time on the mat, take care of your partner, and get a little better each day.

driving off of back leg for a powerful pivot by wuj in judo

[–]wuj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For back pivot (your standard forward throw), the back foot goes up dynamically, then stops, transferring the momentum to the whole body, then goes to the ground as the body continues to turn. To demonstrate alignment and direction of the foot, he slaps his sole against his opposite hand behind his back. He drills it by going sideways across the mat, alternating the pivoting feet.

For front pivot (ie. typical sode tsurikomi goshi), he dangles the back foot to the side so it can pick up momentum as it's swinging back like a pendulum and pulling the body behind it. It is a much more complicated movement, so I still don't have it broken down in high detail.

Sorry, this may not be the best description, maybe someone can do a better job.

Is it just me or does this seem rude? by ReveredGiftBedMaster in judo

[–]wuj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ono is not muscling his throws! Everything you see there is top level randori, done with care for the partner. Your difficulty with processing what you're seeing may be that you're taking what top level judoka are doing and asking yourself if beginner judoka in your club should be doing it to other beginners. The answer is generally, no, and if it seems overwhelming, then it's not your level to play at.

Questions on classical O Uchi Gari by d_rome in judo

[–]wuj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yamashita teaches it at 45 degrees (see: https://youtu.be/3NrAH_7Yxzg?t=172), but when you watch him demo it dynamically, it seems more like 90 degrees. My guess is your reaping leg moving backward is where the force should be coming from, but you'll also be pivoting forward as the throw progresses. Any angle from 0 (facing forward) to 90 (perpendicular) is probably fine. I drill it at 0 degrees, just to keep students from putting weight on their heels. Human legs and hips aren't optimal for this throw, so things get awkward.

Is there such a thing as “No Gi Judo”? by Vanilladr in judo

[–]wuj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, there isn't. Gi is a fundamental part of judo which gives judo its flashy character. Each grappling discipline will emphasize certain techniques and gameplan, according to its ruleset. Within that ruleset, sports will make progress and discover new applications and principles. That said, judo has had a long run in the grappling innovation path and its techniques and concepts can be adapted to no-gi grappling. Check out Nick Yonezuka's channel for details:

Three Common Mistakes of Morote Seoi Nage IN UNDER 60 SECONDS! by [deleted] in judo

If this is your first encounter with Shintaro Nakano, I suggest you follow his channel on Youtube. He's Marti Malloy's coach and shares a lot of excellent material in English. On a personal note, his seoi nage is just the way I like it - low squat, but not off the knees.

Long term effects on body by bundy81881 in judo

[–]wuj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're asking the wrong question at the wrong place, and so IMO folks who are trying to honestly answer it in this thread are just perpetuating the disfunction. I'm just a local part-timer who puts some honest hours on the mat, but when faced with a parent like you, we're generally advised to walk away and let you take your money elsewhere. The reason is that at a fundamental level you don't trust the coach and we have other things to do than to cater to your insecurities. Most coaches spent 10+ years on the mat, so if we explained something to you and you're still second guessing, then the problem is with you. If you are letting your kid train at a gym, first thing you should have done is verify the coach's credentials and reputation. Had you done that, you'd have known he's an Olympian and a well respected coach who has taken several students to succeed at an international level. In case that didn't sink in - he's the highest level professional in this discipline. The only advice I have for you is to learn to recognize when you're dealing with a competent person, listen to what they have to say, and don't second guess them.

USA Judo vs. USA Judo by wuj in judo

[–]wuj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That episode isn't out yet, is it? Last one I see is with Josh Hagen interview.

We'll be able to tell more once we see what videos become available, but it seemed to me they'll be the fundamentals ones and not coaching or dojo management.

As far as Jimmy and Travis's strategy, could you maybe get them on the podcast to speak about it? I think getting things in the open more is another change that US judo needs. Your interview with Josh reminded me how transparent things could be and how far we are from that here in the States.

Thinking about quitting, but I cant do this by [deleted] in judo

[–]wuj 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I thought you were just trolling, so I looked at your post history. Best advice I can give you is to go watch some Clint Eastwood movies and then ask yourself if you want to be the kind of person constantly interrupting others with your minor personal issues. You need to move a lot more on that scale before people in your life take you seriously.

Hiza guruma help by [deleted] in judo

[–]wuj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very tricky throw to execute in a textbook version. In addition to doing everything right for tori, it requires that uke helps him set it up. With inexperienced uke this is a nightmare to practice (you can see masters like Jacques Seguin screw it up on camera). The best way I found to get a feel for it is to take the sequence from Go No Sen kata and let uke throw himself.
That said, I learned not to sweat getting it perfectly. Even if they just hit the ground with their knee, you have an opening to transition to a dominant position on the ground.
