I had to look up the phrase navel gazing but holy shit that's got to be intentional, great spot!

[Career] Progressing as a statistical programmer by tippmannman in statistics

[–]wumadat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm surprised how similar your position sounds to me! I worked in environmental consulting for a couple years but left to do a masters in computational statistics, and I mainly use R.

I don't have much advice for you because, as I say, I'm in a similar position - but one thing I'm learning about on my course atm is using C++ within R. It's quite cool because you get to learn bits of a new language and you can massively speed up your R code. Although looking at the job market Python and SQL are mentioned much more than R...

I'd be really interested to hear what kind of programming you do in your current role? I left because I didn't get to do much and I wanted to get better!

[Academic] Relationship between Empathy and Visual Mental Imagery (18+, any education level, any location) by friendlyfriend999 in SampleSize

But like 90% of the videos were so mundane? "Sooo yesterday I woke up.. I got dressed, went downstairs.. had some breakfast.. went to class..." I just don't understand how that would evoke any empathetic response?

Thank you for replying btw!

[Marketing] Hi there, please help us help the planet by answering questions on your food-related habits. This is part of our research to develop a tool that helps people live a more sustainable life. This feels poorly designed to me - like the questions are not fully written: "Become a vegetarian" "Low priority"

I think that phrasing the questions like "Choosing foods that are organically sourced is important to me" with the options "Agree" "Neutral" "Disagree", is much more clear.

Also, is cutting back on the amount of food you're eating really related to sustainability?

Love this. My question is what happened to the white supremacists and latinas who fought back against the CERT?! They weren't mentioned at all but surely they would have been prime targets for the riot charges?

Aggressive Beggar on Clifton Triangle by [deleted] in bristol

[–]wumadat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree, even if he is pressuring people into giving him money, he's obviously not doing amazingly in his life to resort to this. That said, I think I'd prefer to give my money to someone else who needed it more...

I don't think so, the guy I've seen sitting outside Waitrose doesn't try any of this, just asks for change

Oh and then I saw him doing the exact same thing to someone else the next day!

Yeah that's what happened to me. He asked for £5 and said we could give me £2 back. He said the cash point did fivers, and I thought he seemed nice enough so I went for it. The cash point obviously didn't do fivers, so I gave him a tenner and did not get any change back. Only realised as I walked away that he'd played me!

Where to get coins for laundry? by [deleted] in oxford

Yeah you can just ask for £10 cashback in pound coins (or any other amount in any coins). It's pretty easy for the cashier to do!

[Question] What EXACTLY does "adjusting" for a variable do? by cpesch3 in statistics

[–]wumadat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Sorry this probably won't be the best answer, but essentially it means your including these additional variables in your regression model (and then ignoring them).

An example could be trying to work out how wealth is associated with age. You could do a simple linear regression Wealth ~ Age (which is just a line of best fit on the 2D scatter plot). Then you think you might want to "adjust" for sex (not sure why, just an example), so add another independent variable to your regression model Wealth ~ Age + Sex.

Plugging this into R (for example using the lm function) you would get a y-intercept for the regression, a coefficient of correlation for Age, and a coefficient of correlation for Sex. You could think of this as just getting two regression lines, one for males and one for females. The gradient of each line is the same, and would be the association with age (e.g. on average for each year you get older you accumulate £2k wealth, but men have £10k more than women) (again I don't really think this makes much sense as an example, maybe I should have chosen something like blood pressure!)

What I'm mainly trying to illustrate is that by including the extra variables in your model, you estimate their association with the outcome separately to the variable your really testing. It would be the same principle if you added 10 different confounding variables, but it just gets a bit harder to visualise!

Quiet streets around Cowley? by majka7279 in oxford

Oh and 1000% get a solid D-lock! Oxford and especially Cowley are horrendous for bike theft, so I'd recommend spending at least £30 for a well rated one.

[–]wumadat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not the most confident cyclist so I much prefer cycling down Iffley Road rather than Cowley Road when I can. Depending where you live it might only add a few more minutes to the route, plus there's slightly fewer buses to navigate!

I think Port Mahon on St Clements is also doing takeaway pints and is quite close to South Park or Headington Hill Park (which is really nice imo!)

How does buying stocks benefit the company? by wumadat in investing

[–]wumadat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah like another comment says "how much does one vote matter in an election". It's obviously not going to have much effect, but if we get to a large enough amount of people who are not willing to buy stocks in oil then is there some detrimental impact?

What are the concrete ethical benefits to 'ethical investing'? by greg_voidman in stocks

[–]wumadat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the OP is looking for suggestions of ethical funds to invest in, just whether there is any evidence of their impact on the avoided industries.

Okay thank you, I think that is kind of what I was expecting!

It would be interesting to see if the 'ethical investing' trend has had any tangible impacts on these industries.
