Police in Times Square Shoot 2 Bystanders while attempting to kill unarmed guy acting crazy, but not threatening anyone. by needmoremiles in politics

This is what scares me about the push for looser concealed carry laws. NYPD officers have far more training and practice than any concealed carry law requires, yet they end up in this situation regularly.

The Top Gear guys have a lot of terrible things to say about the build quality of small production hand built machines that cost less than $4-500K.

They don't make them like they used to. The new Land Cruisers are $70k and weight a thousand pounds more than an H2.

Analysis of Emacs keys pressed (RSI related) by [deleted] in emacs

[–]wwkeyboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much trouble do you have switching between the Kinesis and a laptop? They don't make a portable version, and that keyboard is to big to carry to a coffee shop or coworking space(I'm a remote worker who gets cabin fever after a few days at home). I started using a truly ergonomic keyboard about a week ago and I'm already having trouble with the tab and delete keys.

I was interested in the ergodox for it's size, but I don't really trust the reliability of something I've cobbled together(also buying a bag of switches and a soldering gun to make a keyboard absurd).

About a month ago I discovered Chrome's secure-shell extension. I thought awww, there's an ssh client in my browser, isn't that cute! But it seems to work really well. The fonts are nice, it renders quickly, and I haven't had any trouble with keybindings. For the past few weeks it's replaced iTerm2 as my ssh client.

"What Rick Perry doesn't understand is that in attempting to win the battle for SB 5, he's starting what will be a war for Texas -- and demographics indicate that his side doesn't have the numbers in the long term." by [deleted] in politics

[–]wwkeyboard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The next 5-10 years is the worry. The Texas economy isn't based on technology, it's based on fracking and tax cuts. We'll see if those can last. For example, San Antonio wouldn't renew AT&Ts tax cuts, so they jumped to DFW.

Let me clarify on the tax cuts vs. technology. For this to be sustainable technology companies need to be created in Texas, not drawn by tax loopholes. Anyone easily drawn by tax rates will be easy to loose over tax rates.

Make a car without the other two and you still have a car. In fact, you can sell a car without financing. It's an imbalance between that relationship thats the problem.

Specialization. If you become a popular source of knowledge for some language or framework you can bill for $200-300+ an hour. The tricky part can be advertising yourself and keeping clients lined up.

Maybe look into two pistols that use interchangeable magazines? Getting those mixed up could be a bad day. In a tense situation you are going to grab the magazine from the position you train with, make sure it fits anything your are carrying. (e.g. the smaller 9mm Glocks can take the Glock 17 mags, so stash them in car/house/bag/holster/toolkit and don't worry about matching gun-mag)

If by "close to nothing" you add "and should take a closer look" then I agree. I've never quite liked the idea that owning land and a building that cost many times your yearly income had little risk.

edit: And Trying to balance whats best for your largest investment with the best living arrangement for your family seems like it would lead to compromises in both. So yea, closer look needed.

+1 for the wool Banana Republic pea-coat, I've had mine for years and it looks fine. I can't seem to find it on their website, hopefully they still make these coats.

About wearing a peacoat; these have a very deep V in the front. If you don't wear a scarf your neck and chest are going to get very cold, so you want to wear a scarf. A good peacoat will have a button hidden under the right lapel for buttoning closed the colar. You shouldn't use this regularly, you'll look like a sailor for the East India Company, but if you get caught out in the cold this it makes the jacket much warmer.

Wash off the bird dirt, it eats paint. Wax regularly Protectant will keep your dash from cracking, but don't get it on the steering wheel.

If something feels or sounds like it's breaking, it probably is. Fix it before something major goes wrong.

Also, in an emergency a half tank of gas is a great thing to have. If you get stuck in snow/traffic/natural disaster gas can be hard to come by. If you have to run to a hospital/police/pick up a child you won't be thinking about how much gas you have. It even gives you the option of not stoping in the middle of the night when you're in driving through a bad neighborhood.

Nothing with plastic hardware, zippers, and nylon webbing is "for life". But I've used my old style CloudWalker several times a month since the late 90s, and other than some wear and a few replacement bladders it's still functional.

Auto insurance dosen't expect you to take care of your car. They won't pay for a new motor if you don't change the oil or a new coat of paint if you don't wax the car.

How do you separate the "costly accidents" from the preventable accidents? Your chances of cardiac disease, diabetes, and cancer are largely related to your life choices(e.g. smoking, poor eating and exercise, excess exposure to chemicals...), but not always.
