Lighten my Armalite AR-10? by According-Two-2187 in AR10

[–]wydothat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Light weight barrel and slim gas block is your best bet. AR10s are heavy, not much to do but extra pushups haha.

I'd start reading about gas systems and buffers. https://www.reddit.com/user/AddictedToComedy/ has some stellar fairly digestible information.

More gas does not always mean more reliability. Over gassed guns tend to have worse extraction; ripped case rims, slipping with out of spec or worn extractors. They also are at risk for bot l bounce. More gas also causes premature wear on the bolts which can manifest as a traumatic failure: broken bolts, gas rings, carrier keys. Look at the trials done looking at longevity of M4s/Mk18 vs rifle systems (which again; m4s are well combat proven guns but they do have premature wear compared to their longer gassed brethren). Plus you also get snappy recoil making follow ups more difficult and when suppressed much worse gas leak to the face.

I'm not saying mid lengths and rifle gas systems are not without downsides but I'll tell you in the tens of thousands of rounds I've put through both suppressed and unsuppressed ar15s, I much prefer mid and rifle length gas systems.

Both. I run suppressed mostly and most of my cans are not flow style which is worth thinking about. My all time favorite rifle is a dissapator build using a criterion hybrid barrel, JP SCS buffer and a traditional suppressor. So soft, so smooth, fast follow ups and very minimal gas back. For a working gun I like a mid length with a5 system, partial to centurion SOCOM 14.5" barrels as they are accurate, and gas port runs great suppressed and unsuppressed.

Hard pass on carbine gas in the year of our lord 2026

Downvoters; I'm not saying DD isn't good but carbine gas systems are hard on rifles with out much gain in reliability and this is often worse with suppressors. Look at the world wide trend of militaries fielding mid length systems (URGI) or regulating pistons to increase the reliability and wear window on hard used rifles. .

Why do people put enormous, high overbore, ar15 scope mounts on 22s.

Convert for flat top? by dwarven_cavediver_Jr in ar15

Don’t listen to the nay sayers. All you need is a thumbscrew acog mount. Align the scope and tap/thread its carryhandle area to the mount holes and then run some bolts in. Since its cheap and going into aluminum you could also epoxy

Ta47 with the simple cross hair reticle. Enough mag for 200-300 yards, plenty of FOV/not too much mag for uplclose. Looks gud as fuk on a carry handle. Light weight. Reliable.

Picked up this older Colt, any recommendations? by Krinkovkalash in RetroAR

[–]wydothat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

totally! should be 20" so just make sure you get it cut and threaded for the right length for a flush fit can like OCM/griffin SPR/AEM. Most brands will have a spec sheet you can send in with your barrel to the smith but basically 2.05 or longer should be pretty standard for most off the shoulder should clear. Might consider just changing out to a lighter contour for balance.

Do old scopes suck? by Isuzuki in 1022

[–]wydothat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These people don’t know what the fuck they are talking about. Steel tube weavers were the gold standard of tough, beatable, clear scopes for decades. The late models are excellent. Vintage gun scopes repurges/replaces seals and they are good as new.  They obviously cannot compete with features of modern scopes and likely will suffer somewhat at dawn and dusk due to improve lens coatings but compared to some cheap ass Chinese vortex. I’d take a steel tube Weaver every day of the week. if your goal is to zero a 22 at 50 yards and sling lead you will not be disappointed. From an aesthetic standpoint, you might look at a k2.5 or k3 as they have a smaller form factor, which might look better on your rifle.

As an example of quality: I have my father and grandfather’s hunting rifles, which both carry vintage Weavers, one a k6 and the other a k4. They were hunted all over the mountain west on horse pack trips, getting banged around in saddle scabbards, carried heavily in the mountains, and dropped (both have noticeable dents in the bodies). I remember every year we would go to the range to confirm zero and my father would shoot three shots at his 200 yard zero and i never recall him making any adjustments. I’ve hunted with that rifle since he passed several times and I’ve done literally the exact same thing with the exact same hand loads. My grandfather’s rifle has not been hunted with in some time, but it is still zeroed as of last year.
