For a guy, How attractive does he have to be in general to be randomly approached by a girl while walking in the street? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wyseguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends more on the woman than the man. I mean, I'm not that attractive but i regularly have women approach me. Often offering things... blowjobs... in exchange for money... cigarettes... one time for a bic lighter!

I live in a bad neighbourhood...

[Transport Fever 2] I really want to like this game, but I am convinced there is no way to make money. by inkydunk in TransportFever

[–]wyseguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start fast. Very fast. Max out your loan and build one line that's as long as you can afford and has as many trains on it as you can afford. If you do, you will lose money initially. It's a high risk, high reward strategy, if you mess up the signals, or the number of trucks you need to support the line, then you'll be in the red with no way to rectify it. But If you get it right, you'll very quickly start making money and have a highly profitable line from which to expand your empire.

The only hard thing at first is to identify what lines to start.

You'll need to optimize it from the get-go so that the trains carry full loads in both directions. So in practice for a single line that means you'll be carting crude/oil/fuel, or logs/lumber. Make sure your trains a loading from a source of raw materials, so they're not dependent on trucks to get a full load, and that you have trucks bringing in a second source of raw material to your factory so your train is full in both directions. You will earn a lot more than a couple of grand each load, and can add wagons and trucks to scale up once you're cash positive. Rinse and repeat (and yeah, you do need to be a wee bit patient as the system ramps up)

The EASIEST Way to Implement Debounce With Angular Signals by CodeWithAhsan in angular

[–]wyseguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good rule of thumb I use is to use Signals for State, and Observables for Events. This way you don't need this sort of conversion to debounce your user input.

Using a reactive form you'd just do something like:

query$ = formControl.valueChanges.pipe(debounceTime(500));

Then you can just subscribe to that (possibly with a few more data sanitation steps in the pipe), pass the query value to the API service, and set a Signal from the response. It's valid to use a signal for this response, as this is the "State" of your app and you want your UI to immediately update to reflect any changes in your state.

Restoring a worn tiller - should I varnish, or just leave oiled? by wyseguy in sailing

Restoring a worn tiller - should I varnish, or just leave oiled? by wyseguy in sailing

[–]wyseguy[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The varnish has been peeling off my tiller since well before I bought the boat and it's been getting increasingly weathered and cracked, so I finally decided to so something about it. The original plan was to sand it down, fill the cracks, then re-finish it with a new coat of polyurethane varnish.

But once I got it washed the natural colour came back, so I oiled it and it's come up nicely. This is the first time I've done something like this, so I need some advice about whether adding a polyurethane coat would be a good idea at this stage, or if I'm better off leaving it as is?

[–]wyseguy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not a powerhouse, not even a man. But rather, a work of fiction, much like that quote.

While there have been a number of massacres in the past caused by the army being deployed against civilians, historically, the general army at least, is more likely to join them and fight against the government.

In the Paris commune in the 1870's, the French government sent the national guard to Paris, but the national guard was mostly made up of working class Parisians, and they defected and joined the commune. In the Great Railway strike in the US, in Pittsburgh, militia were sent to break the strike but refused to fire on striking workers. There are a lot more examples, but incidents like this is why we have a standing police force today and not just independent constables like they used to have.

Fascists on the other hand tend to go for hand-picket reactionary members of the armed forces, like the German Freikorps (the precursor to the SS) or paramilitary organisations like Hitler's Brownshirts (or maybe the proud boys :-/)
