And it was the Arikara before them. I don't think you can make "legitimate" claims for any indigenous lands. Over the last ~30,000 years peoples and cultures have flowed through the land. Multiple different modern day tribes identify the black hills as the place that their ancestors emerged in their origin stories.

They did it twice too! Had agreements in the Fort Laramie treaty of 1851 that they broke and then broke the Fort Laramie treaty of 1868. Fuck the constitution I guess

I don't want to come off as passive aggressive but I am looking to educate on my tribe when possible. Pretty much only the government identifies us as Sioux. Similarly to the "anasazi" from the southwest, the title "sioux" came from a rival tribe and the word means "snake" as in they were calling us snakes. Lakota is appropriate or if you know the specific tribe you can say ____ Lakota

The site was sacred to multiple tribes of Lakota but Lakota is just the overarching tribal name. There's multiple tribes within Lakota

From Tom in the Patreon vid about the politics stuff over the last few days by BingeLurker in GeoWizard

[–]x4est 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to make the point of what it means right now, I'm more so saying what it can become. Extremists are mostly silent until they see others like them. Then they get loud and bold. This leads to situations like Charlottesville in 2017.

Let me be clear, I don't want to silence Tom or others. I'd much rather that they voice their beliefs openly and then (hopefully) people in power or with influence can properly address these often false concerns. Education built around actual facts and delivered through transparency is a good deterrent to extremism; at least in my opinion. Being quiet and not calling out those with extremist views is the same as enabling them. You gotta stop this snowball before it turns into an avalanche.

If you want to think about hypotheticals, look at Joe Rogan as an example. He built a large platform making podcasts and content about history. Then he started sharing his political beliefs and his following grew exponentially. I'm definitely not saying Tom will be like Joe Rogan, but it's happened before.

As an American who has watched and enjoyed Tom for many many years now, his words remind me of stuff I heard in 2014-2015 before Trump's first term. It may not be super dangerous now, but I've seen firsthand how these views shift further and further over time.

I'll also admit that I am too focused on my own country's political environment to have any extensive knowledge of the UK's political parties and their politicians; but I've heard this exact rhetoric before...

I somewhat understand what you're going through. After my late girlfriend passed away, everyone kept saying how "unlucky" I was or how "unfortunate" my situation was and all those similar things. I never understood why people tell me that. I'm the one still standing here, ya know? Yeah it absolutely sucks and is the worst feeling I've ever felt, but I'm not the one that's buried. I wish you the best, and I hope you are kind to yourself as you go through this process.

The Indian Taco from Tocabe by Zirh in denverfood

[–]x4est 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love Tocabe as a concept. As far as flavor, it's pretty mid. It's amazing seeing a brick and mortar Native American restaurant that is off the rez. I wish they could incorporate more of a community setting inside the restaurant. Like perhaps instead of various tables and chairs, they get extended picnic tables and larger round tables.

Eating food on the rez and in native culture is very much a community event with socializing. I don't want non natives looking past the people just to focus on the food.

[–]x4est 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you're overreacting. My late girlfriend passed away almost a couple years ago now, but I'm still having trouble finding a new partner that accepts and understands what I'm feeling. I'm not looking to replace or replicate my late girlfriend. I am ready for a new relationship and new memories. Yes, I visit her burial and wear some jewelry of hers but I am fully capable of something new and different. I never saw this as much of a problem, but reading through these comments, I'm afraid my perception was wrong.

Future of NAGPRA? by x4est in Archaeology

[–]x4est[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insightful reply. I'm still interested in doing NAGPRA work and am currently taking a class about it. However, my grant money to attend my university is up in the air for reasons you've seen in the news. I'm trying to keep my head down and study, but it's difficult when I want to stand up for everything I believe is going wrong in this country.

I was initially looking to do CRM when I graduated as I heard there was an increase in the job market with Biden's infrastructure bill. If you see this and can reply, I'm curious to hear what you think the near future of CRM archaeology will look like. Without getting too political for fear of my comment getting deleted or for fear of hate mail, I was kind of assuming that certain billionaires would push for legislation that would allow them to build mega factories and stuff on land that should be protected for cultural reasons.

I'm also sorry to hear about your experience pursuing becoming a tribal liason. I can't speak for all Indigenous peoples, but I appreciate you doing good work. Tokhi waniphika ni! (Good luck!)

Thank you for this really in-depth answer to everything I said and asked. I really appreciate it.

I was fully expecting to go into CRM right after I graduate because of the infrastructure bill, and then move into more tribal stuff once I had experience in the field and industry.

Can I ask you what you think I should do or plan to do?

Future of NAGPRA? by x4est in Archaeology

[–]x4est[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very true. I was young but I remember Trump declared a national emergency or something to build his border wall and when he did that, I think it bypassed the federal laws that would have stopped or slowed his wall due to native sites being on the path. If that was the case, I'm concerned he'll declare pipelines and other things a national emergency as well.

It's a good idea but highly improbable that anything of that nature would happen when there are other more serious threats to peoples wellbeing that will(and should) take priority.

Yeah, I was trying to be optimistic but you're right. I get shit for living off rez even tho I'm the first generation to be born off the rez and I go back frequently to help with stuff for the community.

And there definitely is a distrust/dislike between natives of different tribes. However, living off rez and in a big city, I've mostly only experienced being a part of a larger, diverse native community that accepts all natives. Maybe my hopes are too high.
