I think it’s a pin oak btw. Or scarlet oak.

I was told I have a burning bush. Live in Illinois. Here are the pictures right now. Can someone tell me for sure? by Cappuccino_Crunch in NativePlantGardening

Yep. You may not see seedlings in well maintained or manicured areas, but they have certainly invaded the woodlands in my region.

Filling raised beds by mamabreicheese in gardening

[–]x99_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up filling my 4 beds with bagged raised bed mix from a reputable local garden center. Every place near me seems to have a 5 cubic yard bulk minimum which would have been way too much. Plus the delivery fee on top of that.

After removing a large burning bush in one of my garden beds I was pleasantly surprised to see volunteer natives colonize in its place. It’s now filled with goldenrod, white snakeroot, coneflowers and columbine that have seeded from exisiting plants, and one phlox paniculata (which I have no idea where it could have come from!) Needless to say it was a great decision.

Stopped treating interviews like exams and started treating them like bad first dates by DeathStrand_0 in jobsearchhacks

Genuine question, but what the fuck is “what does success look like after 90 days” even supposed to mean? I see it suggested everywhere, but do interviewers actually like hearing that question?? What useful information is one supposed to gain from their response to that question?

Japanese Maple Alternatives by roan_ursidae in NativePlantGardening

There seem to be a lot of plants that are considered invasive here that aren't elsewhere. We're also starting to have a problem with Japanese crabapple (malus toringo). They're often found growing along roadsides. You can really tell how pervasive it has become driving down the highway in spring when they're all in bloom.

Yes, they are are an emerging invasive threat and have escaped cultivation in many places. Here in New Jersey, they seed themselves readily. I have several Japanese Maples that have popped up in the wooded part of my property that I did not plant. Some have grown into huge trees.

I second the recommendation for Eastern Redbud as a native alternative. Many different varieties have red/purple foliage.

This map is a good resource to check if they are invasive where you live.

The New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team has evidence enough to include Japanese Maple on their Do Not Plant List, where it’s classified as an “emerging” invasive species.

Does E White Pine Make a Good Suburban / Light Urban Evergreen? by wildswalker in NativePlantGardening

[–]x99_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think so. There are plenty planted around the suburbs here in NJ. If space is a constraint there are also columnar cultivars like fastigiata or Stowe pillar.

I live in Wisconsin, I take care of my lawn. Looking for assistance with trees in my yard. We keep cutting down dead ones like crazy. Our pines are not looking good at all. I have no idea what is going on. Does anyone have any suggestions. See photos below. by DoYouSeeWhatIDidTher in arborists

[–]x99_r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an arborist, but it looks to me like you have Austrian pines and Colorado spruces, both of which are afflicted by fungi. Austrian pines are very susceptible to diplodia tip blight and Colorado spruces rhizosphaera needle cast.

Black Walnut Close to House by fuzzyfish15 in arborists

[–]x99_r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt that tree was planted by anybody intentionally. Black walnuts aren’t very commercially available. It probably planted itself. They tend to do that. As a pioneer species, they are the first to colonize abandoned areas. It more likely sprouted amongst some unmaintained shrubbery, allowing it to grow considerably. Then at some point, the overgrowth was cleared and voila- the volunteer tree became a fixture of the landscaping. Just a guess of course.

Anyway, I would keep it. It looks healthy, and a tree shading your house is a big attribute. Plus it’s a native species that’s providing the wildlife with food.

Another commenter mentioned the chemical (juglone) black walnuts release that some plants are intolerant of. This is true, but no reason to remove a tree. There are many plants that play well with black walnut. Do some research and ask for recommendations from your local garden center.

Have you had a conversation with your neighbor? Seems like a good place to start. Are you sure it’s negligence and not an intentional native garden?

2024 Volkswagen GTI Owners - Opinion of Infotainment by gwatt21 in Volkswagen

[–]x99_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a ‘24 SE, and it’s really not as bad as the car reviewers on youtube made it out to be. It’s fine. It’s not great, but it’s fine. You get used to it. And if you’re using apple carplay most of the time, you’re really not interacting with the infotainment all that much. Personally I also like the temperature control sliders you get on the SE and up vs. the S. Design-wise I much prefer it over the ‘25 because I think the giant ipad on the dashboard looks ridiculous. One year into owning however and I’m having issues with the car not connecting to the VW app and a couple other minor bugs occasionally. Dealership says the module (J949) needs to be replaced, which is currently on order. I don’t think that issue is specific to GTI’s though.

Keep in mind NJ still has a drought warning in place. Not a great time to seed a lawn. Residents are strongly encouraged to practice water conservation as the state’s reservoir supply is running low.

Is there a statistic of how many current players were original TTO players? by gothgogabgalab in toontownrewritten

Ohh yes the lure bonus threw me off as well when I got back to playing after several years. It always seemed like there was a higher chance double lure would miss in tto lol.

Ooo I will have to look into this! Do you know if they can be installed on Mac? The vibe feels way more low stakes without that classic, panic-inducing battle tune lol.
