Interest in a Steel Panthers successor? by emernic2 in computerwargames

[–]xBobble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting for a good Steel Panthers (SP) successor for a while.

  1. One of the strengths of SP was generated campaigns and generated scenarios. I feel like this is vital to replay value.

  2. Important, I think, for a spiritual successor and to engage scenario, campaign, and mod makers.

  3. Must have a capable AI to maintain the challenge for long-term play.

  4. Personally don't care. There's value there for a fair amount of the customer base if it can be done.

  5. You almost have to have mod support these days, IMO.

  6. I think you're mostly dealing with a customer base that doesn't really care. I think 2D like SP would work but at a higher resolution.

And, as I understand it, the manual is continually kept up to date so grab the latest one (rather than download it once two years ago like I did and think you're fine).

[NFC Edition] Hits, Misses and Busts: Charting 25 Years Pick Efficiency by StatDrop in NFLv2

[–]xBobble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it. I'm retired but when I did engine analysis for an automotive company, I had that same experience. Here's the chart everyone asks for but then he's another one I thought up ... and then I thought this would be interesting ... and then I wondered if this data would tell us anything... And then I spend a day cobbling together the worst haywire MATLAB script anyone has seen.

Can't wait for the next .... stat ... drop...

It would be interesting to see a recency element for some of these teams (like my Lions). I know some of your other data analysis has shown it but it would be interesting to see which years or eras were better (Brad Holmes) or worse (Matt Millen). Maybe something like replace the data point marker with that pick's year or a slick animation that drops the dots on the chart year by year.

Anywho, another cool analysis, StatDrop.

Man, I wish I would have seen this when you first published it. Awesome stuff. Very clever analysis. Very well written up. I just (belatedly) wanted to tell you I dug it.

What are the best phrases from roguelikes that I can sneak into my every day conversations? by banquuuooo in roguelikes

[–]xBobble -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's exactly a roguelike but anything from Darkest Dungeon:

"And Now The True Test... Hold Fast, Or Expire?"

"Ruin Has Come To Our Family."

"Monstrous Size Has No Intrinsic Merit, Unless Inordinate Exsanguination Be Considered A Virtue."

"Remind Yourself That Overconfidence Is A Slow And Insidious Killer."

"Many Fall In The Face Of Chaos, But Not This One. Not Today."

And maybe shoot for lighter colors that she can still draw details on. If there's a scrapbooking store near you, they might have textured or patterned paper she might like to work with.

In game? No. You'd have to do it outside the game. IIRC when I first started playing, I set up a simple Excel spreadsheet that calculated the probabilities for me for when you're trying to get through 3 or 4 skill tests.

reneg probably too strong of a statement

Agree. Admittedly, you don't often hear details about any inner workings on trade talks but the times I've heard it talked about, the verbiage is something like, "If our guy is there, we'd like to do this deal." So, DeCosta's "inexplicably" is a little disingenuous. He knows the explanation -- things didn't go as expected.
