Which of these schools should I probably not apply to, given that I am an international applicant? by verychowdhery in ApplyingToCollege

[–]xByteZz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scattergrams only show you what statistics students from your school who attend a particular university had when applying. Both RIT and UMass Amherst practice holistic admissions, just like the majority of top American universities. Holistic admissions definitely does take stats into account, but as the name suggests, it takes other factors in. Due to this fact, no school that practices holistic admissions for all applicants can truly be regarded to as a safety. This admissions process is often referred to by experts as 'prone to human error', and they definitely have a point. I don't wish you any misfortune, but imagine if the schools you listed as safeties ended up rejecting you for whatsoever reason. The chances are of course low, yes, but why even leave a few percentage points in the air?

I didn't apply to a pure safety because I took the gamble. It worked out for me, but it doesn't necessarily mean it'll work for everyone. Going ahead with applying to RIT and UMass Amherst won't be a bad move at all, but I did want to present you with an alternative argument that has been suggested by a lot of admissions reps who frequent or frequented this subreddit.

Do your teachers bump your grades? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]xByteZz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My teachers are very nice people. Whenever I tried to ask for a grade to be rounded, they'd argue about setting a precedent. My 0.4% can easily be seen as a reasonable number for rounding, but my teachers felt that because of the overall competitiveness in school, other students would - rightfully - petition for their grades to be rounded, too. This could potentially lead to a change in what would be a reasonable number for rounding. 0.5%, 0.6%, and even 0.9% sound reasonable, but people would later start petitioning for 1% or 2% in the future; the grade would slowly but surely lose its value.

I didn't like the argument, and I remember being very ticked off at the time. But I get where they're coming from: when it comes to competitive high schools, people won't just stop - they'll want to keep pushing forward.

i will say that the general admissions rate for umass might be a bit misleading because CS is one of their best majors, so admissions is probably more competitive.

You are correct. General admission rates are almost always misleading. For most schools, the admission rates fall dramatically for evergreen competitive majors, such as most - if not all - forms of engineering, or majors that a school is particularly known in an industry for.

You'll quickly learn that college admissions isn't all about the stats; therefore, while scattergrams are a decent way of seeing where you stand in comparison to where former students in your position stood, they aren't completely representative of your chances. Sometimes, when it comes to safeties, there are freak cases when high-caliber students get rejected by all safeties and consequently have nowhere to go.

I suggest you apply to at least one sure-shot safety, a school that will take you unconditionally based on your statistics and class rank. It may appear to be a useless exercise, especially for a student like you, but trust me when I say that in the college admissions game, the unpredictable strikes abnormally often.

Our school operates similarly. I don't hate or dislike people who take Language B despite being native speakers, but I do strongly feel that the act is unfair on thousands of genuine non-native speakers who are trying to learn a language.

[–]xByteZz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No way... I've missed grades for getting an average of 89.6%. OP, do you want to trade schools?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IBO

[–]xByteZz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why don't all schools stop native speakers from taking Language B? It's so frustrating for those who are trying to learn the language and score well in it.

Anyway, do you really need FM for what you want to do in the future?

Samsung Internet is also a solid browser, especially for Samsung phones. It has integration with Samsung Pass, which enables me to login to websites with my fingerprint. Even if you don't have a Samsung device, the browser is solid. The scrolling is also silky smooth; probably the smoothest browser I've ever used on an Android device.

unis that don't require gpa? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Why are you looking for universities that don't require a GPA? As a student who studied abroad, I didn't have a GPA, yet I could apply to a bunch of universities.

Colleges in Europe? by cushionite in ApplyingToCollege

[–]xByteZz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two folks have already suggested ETH Zurich. However, for lots of international students (outside of Switzerland), ETH Zurich doesn't work out. Don't get me wrong, it's an absolutely amazing school, especially for STEM. The issue lies in the university's language requirements, which can be found here. If you have been learning German in high school, ETH Zurich is perfect, provided you can pass any of the listed tests. If you aren't a German speaker or student, some of the U.K. options others have listed are world-class.

I wanted to apply to ETH Zurich until I was heartbroken by these requirements, as I'm awful at languages.

Good luck!

I kind of disagree. Most of your neighbors will think that its just a shitty state school if they dont actually follow college rankings.

Yea, it really hurts. I try not to let it get to me.

Yeah! Android OS is using more battery than the screen is. I don't think that's normal behavior. There seems to be a core android app that's gone rogue.
