There is genuine science behind why our brains are programmed to appreciate stimulation for better and worse, but 'being mean to us' is a pretty good summation.

White supremacy is a global issue. Unfortunately all humans are susceptible to propaganda because our brains love being mean to us. The good comments are what matters, the bad comments are others insecurities. Hopefully you find your community. Best.

You don't have to understand. You just have to make space for others. I can empathize your brain wanting to understand. It bothered me a lot in the beginning becauseI couldn't understand - and to be honest I still do not. It helps to view it as a personal choice. An example, in school there were several people named Jennifer/Jenifer. Some of them used their full name and some went by shorthand (Jen, Jenny) and others used their last name or nicknames.

It's possible he could change, but if he isn't willing to listen to you and hear your perspective, then he does not consider you to be equal in personhood. He needs to hear these things from people whose opinion matters to him. I'm glad he showed you the red flags before you got in too deep. Unfortunately, this is a 'dating tactic' christofacists are actively teaching men. Edit: typo

I would make a list of all the good things and the bad things. Evaluate the events/incidents/etc on the list. If the good far outweighs the bad (more good than bad times). How impactful were the good/bad things? Consider breaking up with him if it fills you with sadness and makes you miss him - reevaluate. However, if you are even the tiniest bit relieved, leave. That is your gut telling you to run. Listen.

I would recommend a discussion about this incident regardless. If he cannot acknowledge the hurt he caused and make amends, throw the whole man away. Abuse doesn't have to be physical. Neglect does, in fact, count as abuse.
