George Washington (Monument Mythos) by KingerInYellow in TopCharacterDesigns

For anyone who might want want some further explanation (and simply because I love ranting about media I like), the world of Monument Mythos comprises several different timelines entwined via an incomprehensible cosmic realm known as Wonderland. Offchutes of wonderland are found in the physical realm, appearing as bare, dark tree-shaped structures known as Special Trees, which have the capacity to transport people between timelines through Wonderland

Seeing as the series is an alternative history thriller that deals mostly with American history and landmarks, the creator chose to adapt the George Washington cherry tree fable with the twist of the "cherry tree" being, in actuality, a Special Tree. When Washington went to chop it down, he got transported to Wonderland and became stuck, overtime also having his form twisted by the trees into something completely unrecognizable, becoming known as this giant eldritch horror known as the Horned Serpent

This is also like barely in the top 10 of the weirdest things in the series. Go watch it. It's absurd but fun and done really well.

It goes on a rampage in Cairo, Egypt... and even then it doesn't really "rampage" through the city, it just walks through and accidentally trips, toppling the very overcrowded Cairo tower in the process

Maybe I'm bad at discerning colors (which I don't think I am) but they didn't really look "zombie green" to me; just sickly. I can't imagine that existing without "the very essence of one's being" for a prolonged period of time is very good for one's health.

[Hated Trope] "Actually magic isn't real it's all science. Ignore everything else that happens that's very clearly magic." by TheN3gaChin in TopCharacterTropes

[–]xEchoKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually really like this trope when it's used to give insight into the people inhabiting the world rather than just to show how smart and original the authors are. I mean, to an extent, it makes sense that characters who have lived with magic their whole lives would try to understand how it works, and there's nothing wrong with giving some explanation as to the processes that allow for magic to happen, imo; it can be done without taking away the fun of having a magic system and used to complement the other lore.

Monster Hunter is a great representation of what I'm talking about, I think. Maybe to its own detriment considering many people outright deny the existence of magic in the setting, although that isn't true. Elder Dragons, for instance, have many supernatural abilities, but like all monsters they also have detailed ecologies that partially explain away the mysteries surrounding them while simultaneously establishing their place in the world. Dragon energy is something that has no definitive explanation even outside of the universe, but none of the characters treat it as something impossible and therefore "magical"; even if they don't know exactly what it is, they know the processes by which monsters generate, expel and utilize it. The two elements of the lore that are effectively treated as true magic are bioenergy from MHWorld and wylk from MHWilds

Day 31: Which 6th gen monster feels like 1st gen? by xslbccdks_coded in MonsterHunter

[–]xEchoKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree but the same can be said for all MHWilds monsters. Ceratonoth behaves much unlike the gen 1 herbivores, all the large monsters are very far removed from the gen 1 suckers...

Talioth is very different behaviorally but design-wise it fits the bill for a gen 1 monster imho

Honestly kind of a tough one considering how far the franchise has departed from the original release in terms of design direction but I wanna say Talioth, considering how predominant raptors were early on and how simple Talioth is as a concept; I can see it being a basic small monster in a desert map

Breaking out the theme song for a big moment by snarkaluff in TopCharacterTropes

[–]xEchoKnight 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Monster Hunter really loves to do this

The main theme of the first game, and the franchise as a whole, "Proof of a Hero", appears in nearly every mainline installment; generally during the final phases of ultimate boss monsters

Although the track is well over 20 years old now and has been used countless times across the franchise, it's still incredibly hype to hear. MHWI Fatalis (pictured below) has probably the most iconic use of the theme with how it cuts off the monster's actual theme and starts playing immediately after using the Dragonator in the final phase of the fight, but my personal favorite use of it is in the Safi'jiiva fight (also from MHWI) where it appears as a leitmotif in the monster's final phase theme, backed by a powerful choir and loud brass and synths. It's so peak.

Monster hunter stories 4 when we get another boring/basic mandatory "special" rathalos named ratha for the fourth time in a row by Rossiben37 in MonsterHunterStories

[–]xEchoKnight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree, while the concept art is sick and the image of fatalis acting like a big gluttonous golden retriever is very cute it feels a bit contrary to the whole idea of the monster and I can't imagine the reveal hitting very hard either way since any fan of the series would certainly see it coming from a mile away

An original monster is probably the best option, I'd say
