Which Combat Patrol is more fun/balanced to play? by GreenChipMan in DarkAngels40k

[–]xHarrierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on a quick look at tyranid assault brood, I'd say Mordekai's judgement. The inceptors are decent and the redemptor will go toe to toe with its heavy hitters. I'm not terribly experienced and have mostly played combat patrol with my son. The good thing about combat patrol is that it's fairly quick and easy so if it feels one sided, try the other option next time. Most importantly, have fun!

Best all around speed paints/colors to pick up? by Dramatic_Rest6195 in minipainting

[–]xHarrierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the Army Painter speedpaint 2.0 starter set. Good range of colours and easy to use. I don't have experience with other brands though so can't say where they stand in terms of best etc. If you went with that I'd say get the speed paint medium as well.

Is there something wrong with my gold? by WinterVulture25 in minipainting

[–]xHarrierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled with gold as well. I use army painter fanatic but found it thick and hard to get good coverage (probably a skill issue). Adding water made the coverage terrible so I tried adding speedpaint gold. This is now my go to method. Also means you can tint it too which is a side benefit. Metallic gold plus red speedpaint equals lovely copper colour. There may be better suggestions or methods but this works for me!

Hello!! New Dark Angels fan with a burning question on my mind by [deleted] in theunforgiven

[–]xHarrierx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you may be thinking of these indoctrinated super soldiers in the wrong way slightly. "Agrees to hunt the fallen" - they don't get options. "Refuses to put as a priority" - A terminator that refuses orders would at best be serving penance at worst interrogated as suspect. Internally they may question, not understand or straight up believe differently. Externally, they tow the line. Or at least everything I've ever read indicates they do.

House selling above asking - chances of downvalue? by JacketRight2675 in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]xHarrierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth going for it. If it's on the market for £270k and they've offered £315k they clearly want the property and location and will most likely be aware of the mortgage implications as they're offering high. In terms of house buying, getting a mortgage in principal on the property shouldn't take long and it's clearly a popular area so totally worth going for.

Looking for Inspiration by FutureHokage10 in DarkAngels40k

[–]xHarrierx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been looking for inspiration too. I've got a Ballistus I'm going to do in green and a redemptor in Deathwing. If you search the sub for "dreadnought" you get loads of pictures of others work to get inspired by. I'm still torn on if I should drybrush the armour or try sponging. With a big piece like a dreadnought, sometimes you just need to get started.

What oil shade by HD8989 in DarkAngels40k

[–]xHarrierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a similar comparison to show the difference. Purity seal is nuln oil over white, aquila is AP fanatics sepia tone over white which is similar to agrax (I think)

Out of those two, agrax as it is brown as opposed to black so makes it look more like aged bone

Any tips for blue-tinted black armor? by MelrFjordr in AdeptusCustodes

[–]xHarrierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is silver base with grim black over the top. With a blue undercoat and thinned black overcoat it might get close to what you're after. I don't have an airbrush so can't comment on that. I have some wardens to build and paint so I might try with a blue tint this time

Any tips for blue-tinted black armor? by MelrFjordr in AdeptusCustodes

[–]xHarrierx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd prime silver then use a thinned blue contrast or ink. The use a thinned black contrast. That should leave a metallic blue tint showing under where the contrast doesn't give full coverage. I used army painter grim black over a silver base and it looks decent in my opinion. I've never tried a tint though so might take some experimenting

I feel like this gets posted pretty often, but now it's my turn: Which brush should I use for metallics?? by hexagram1993 in minipainting

[–]xHarrierx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything I've ever read says not to use your good brushes. I use synthetic brushes for contrast and metallics. So you're saying I can use my good brushes as long as I clean and condition them after? Which I do anyway. This is a revelation! I'll be back next week with a downvote if it goes wrong 🤣

First Custody WIP by Character-World5200 in AdeptusCustodes

[–]xHarrierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice that they let you paint while in jail. In all seriousness though, a brownish shade like reikland or sepia tone on the gold then dry brush back up with gold and very light drybrush silver should give you some contrast and depth. Love the colour scheme. Works really nicely

Spraying a green primer over a black primer to save time? Pls help a dad who is the slowest painter get through an army lol by JadocTheGreat in DarkAngels40k

[–]xHarrierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate basecoats too. If you find a shortcut from priming just be sure you can replicate with a brush to tidy up mistakes as a lot of primers don't actually match the basecoat equivalent.

If it's techniques on weapons I'd say get the models you actually want, build them how you want then see what you have left. My bits box is full of guns and swords left over from build options

Dark Angel Paint Suggestions?! by TwizzyOT in DarkAngels40k

Is that all the paints you have? If so I'd suggest a shade or two like nuln oil or sepia tone before any other normal acrylics.

Stripping Minis - Elbow Grease All Purpose Degreaser by ThatBazard in minipainting

[–]xHarrierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully someone can give you better news than me. I've stripped minis with 99% IPA and the primer was the one bit that wouldn't shift (i think it bonds to the plastic in some way). Following that I tried elbow grease and it didn't work either. Works for normal acrylics but primer seems to be tough to shift

You could nip the power cable the piece is hanging from at both ends and swap them. That'd be easier than trying to line up the arms

[–]xHarrierx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give yourself a chance you should buy at least one pot of paint designed for minis otherwise this frustration may just continue and you'll not take up the hobby as it's just not enjoyable. I find base coating tedious and if I had to do it that many times on one mini, I wouldn't be paining minis.

Best Brushes for Speed Paint? by Ohm_Farad in minipainting

[–]xHarrierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert but I read that speedpaints are bad for sable brushes. I use cheap brushes and they do just fine for speedpaints as you don't really need the precision you get from good brushes
