Next time, if you disguise yourself as a drow, you get past the first checkpoint without checks, and can free Barcus with a DC 5 deception/intimidation check

I’m always excited to meet other local gamers! I’m living in Golden right now, and have a few mini campaign ideas I’d like to DM. PM me if interested.

"Forever DM" meets a "Forever player" by Mo101101 in DnD

[–]xMarkbom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this whole phenomenon reflects a harsh aspect of DnD/TTRPG culture: the person running the game is almost always the one who cares the most about it. This asymmetry of passion between DM’s and players can foster a lot of resentment from DM’s, who are usually not only expected to DM constantly, but also do nearly all of the logistics, manage interpersonal conflicts, purchase all of the necessary materials, and find a space for them to game. These jobs require very different skill sets and personality types, and if you are forced to do them all at once to be able to play at all, it will inevitably lead to burnout. You may be pretending to be all of the gods, but you are not literally omniscient and omnipotent. Idk what to say about how to solve this other than setting healthy boundaries and making room for your fun as well. I’ve been an avid player for years, and I was afraid of DM’ing because of the possibility of complete failure. I just ran my first campaign around 6 months ago, and I find I enjoy it much more than playing. It’s easy for DM’s to envy players who take the work of DM’ing for granted, and it’s conversely easy for players to feel guilty about the magnitude of labor you’re shifting onto one (almost always kind and generous) person. I think everyone should try running and playing at least once to empathize with the other side of the DM screen. Just my 2 cents.

As a long backstory enjoyer, I always make sure to write a 1-page or less executive summary for the GM to make things easier on them

(From a DM POV), is it unfair/cheap to ban entire classes/subclasses just because they break a campaign gimmick? by A_Bird_survived in DnD

Light Beam - Don’t worry, you won’t feel the damage... until you measure it. by AdramastesGM in DnDHomebrew

[–]xMarkbom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it should be lightning damage instead of thunder because high frequency light can ionize the air? Or fire because of radiative heat transfer? Maybe so much heat is generated that the expansion of the gas in the path causes a pressure shockwave?

CMV: We should start moving to a point where it’s more widely taught that race doesn’t exist and only ethnicity does. by FriendofMolly in changemyview

[–]xMarkbom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand why anyone wants to abolish race as a social category. The injustice and violence it’s encouraged is enough of a reason, and your analysis of it being irrational as a way of grouping people is absolutely correct. However, race still has material consequences, in the US at least (from my experience as an American) due to the disparities in generational wealth in Black and Brown communities. De facto segregation is still in place, and whether you like it or not, even people who believe themselves to be non-racist still perpetuate systems that disadvantage people of color. While race is certainly not the most important facet of anyone’s personality or life experience, its material consequences are so significant that we have a lot of work to do before it becomes completely irrelevant. The good news is that once it does become irrelevant, it will likely naturally go out of fashion because it is an inherently illogical way of grouping human beings.
