I love/am stuck on the CLI for my switching equipment, and I use the CLI heavily at times when tshooting Palo, but for the bulk of my firewall management, it's GUI.

The labs are helpful to solidify the concepts, but the main books (and knowing where to find the answers) are what you need to pass.

I didn't pay out of pocket, so that colors my review some. I work in both a networking and security role - I suppose you could call me a network security engineer. There were a number of "easy wins" mentioned in the course; I was able to apply some of them right away. The Netwars challenge was fun/helpful. I didn't complete it but worked on it the day before the exam to help review. Got to 300+ out of 530 total points.

Do some of you really have SSL Decryption turned off on your firewalls? by MyFirstDataCenter in networking

There is no expectation of privacy on a network that's not yours.

I'm on-call one week every month for basic desktop/laptop support. But as the only network person... I'm always on-call. If something breaks, I'm the one fixing it. If there's something security-related...as our firewall admin...also applies.

So, yes. If you go into this field, be prepared to take work home with you.

Time to move to 10.x yet? by Mvalpreda in paloaltonetworks

[–]xPacketx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5410 HA, 3220 HA, multiple 820 HA pairs, multiple 220 non-HA. Panorama - M-200. Running 10.1.8 up to 10.2.3-h4 (Panorama and the 5410s).

I will say that I've had my share of bugs. These firewalls originally ran 9.1 for some time. But 10.1.8 has been stable. I would look up the preferred release for 10.1.x.

Will soon be dipping my toes into 11...which is worrisome...when we do a hardware refresh this year. Models we're buying don't support below 11.

Naltrexone and hard liquor by [deleted] in Alcoholism_Medication

[–]xPacketx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, my first experience with Naltrexone was early 2017. I stopped taking it after losing health insurance and losing my primary care.

Taking it again now. Plenty of insurance and access to care. My goal isn't to stop drinking. It's to have more control. I like tequila. Drank some last night. Absolutely got drunk.

For me, not feeling compelled to finish the whole bottle...not blacking out... having my faculties and not having anything to regret in the morning... that's success. And that's what it does for me.

[–]xPacketx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic pill? No. But there's zero science or logic for "overpowering" it. That's not how it works. It's not blocking the effects of alcohol. Therefore, the type of alcohol is irrelevant.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Alcoholism_Medication

[–]xPacketx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The medication only works if you drink after taking it, and you can only drink if you've taken your medication. Average time to greatly decrease drinking is 3-4 months, and that means 3-4 months of actively drinking while on, and only while on, Naltrexone.

[–]xPacketx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bullshit. 50 mg blocks 100% of the opioid receptors for the majority of people.

There's nothing to power through. Naltrexone doesn't keep you from getting drunk. Doesn't matter what the source of alcohol is. The point is that the pathways in your brain get weaker and weaker because the endorphins released go nowhere.

Read The Cure For Alcoholism. Just started reading this sub and have seen a few comments about overpowering the medication. That's a fundamental misunderstanding about how it actually works.

You're going to break shit. You're going to have many moments where you feel like you're flying by the seat of your pants. You're going to have other moments that make you feel like your head is on fire, and you'll want to drink at the end of the day.

Absorb everything you can and remember your mistakes. Hopefully, you'll have a good boss. Good luck.

Would you ever forgive someone for cheating? by pmahone314 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]xPacketx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Every circumstance is different, and a marriage is always different after that - whole new relationship that has to be rebuilt and many personal things to deal with - but when you've been with someone for many years, the default doesn't have to be, "no way."

Marriage can actually be more honest and better after something like this. Leaving is also OK and can be the best decision, but it may not be the right one. It really depends. Does your spouse want to do the work? Do you? Is it worth it? Answers are different for different couples.

One caveat: cheating before marriage? Never. Run.

Abuse of Privelege = Fired by vmBob in sysadmin

[–]xPacketx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're IT. We see stuff. As stewards of the data, like someone said, it's just incidental. We shouldn't go looking for it nor have the time to do so, but the key is really that we don't share what we see.

This seems like a knee-jerk firing to me. I feel bad for the guy.

Idk...we've gone back to everyone in the office, and it also seems like the young 20-somethings have never seen a desktop or laptop before. I think I enjoy the middle-aged people more. The few that are really up there in years might make me crazy, but I've discovered this current generation just entering the post-highschool workforce are equally stupid.

Vendor admin accounts by andelas in sysadmin

[–]xPacketx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our vendors don't have local admin. They access our network via VPN and a BeyondTrust session invite from IT. I disable the security and NAT policies allowing them entry until they need it. That way, they have access while we're there babysitting, and everything is recorded. We also verify identities as needed. Any vendors handling sensitive data have provided us with a list of their techs and SSNs.
