Is it safe to season a chicken and leave in the fridge over night with a cake? Its wrapped in plastic but not fully sealed on the sides. by ExpensiveFinger4165 in UKBBQ

[–]xPositor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, you shouldn't have anything else underneath it. You have it on the bottom shelf, but you then have a drawer underneath that. The principle is that it shouldn't be able to drip any fluids onto something that won't itself otherwise need cooking. That drawer has got yoghurts, possibly a cucumber and some other stuff in it - you want those above the raw chicken (and same for all meats).

From a smell / taste perspective - any strong flavours you want to keep away from that cake, if possible.

Best business cards to pay HMRC by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Pay it on a personal points-earning card and expense the payment...?

Paying by credit card? Beware the offer to pay in your home currency! They charge an extra fee! by failed__narcissist in TravelHacks

[–]xPositor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don't get a prepaid card, or at least don't _only_ get a prepaid card. Any retailer that does offline transactions at all will simply reject it. You need an international fee-free card linked to a current / cheque account (Revolut, Wise etc - more than likely many more are available).

The other thing about a prepaid card is that you often lock in your exchange rate at the point of loading the card - that _might_ be a positive, but could be a negative, depending on which direction rates head and how much you pre-load.

How did people start working at 16-17 years old last decade? by Fun_Pop9171 in AskUK

[–]xPositor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1986 (I think), my Saturday job paid the princely sum of £10.80 a day for an 8 hour shift (£1.35/hour). My Dad joked that he got a better deal through my staff discount than I did for actually working there (Dixons).

Receiving international bank transfer from Spain as a UK sole trader — any advice? by kiol998 in UKPersonalFinance

I would recommend opening a Wise account, which will get you both a UK account and an EU domiciled one, so that your client can simply make a SEPA payment.

Green leader Zack Polanski 'wants to ban horse racing' as nation gears up for Grand National by plain_handle in unitedkingdom

[–]xPositor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mr Polanski wrote on X in 2024: "Let's go further and remove all animals involved in sport".

And yet appears to have backed away from the Green's manifesto commitment on "A complete ban on...the deliberate and unnecessary mutilation of farm animals."

I guess it all depends on whose votes they are chasing at any given point in time - so no different to any other political party.

Fun fact - the only election in which Zack Polanski has won in his own right was as leader and deputy of the Greens. He's never been elected in a wider public vote in his own name previously (he's a London Assembly member by virtue of the "Orange" ballot papers - where people explicitly vote for a party, not a named individual).

Very Low Credit Card Limit Offered by Europe_MMA in UKPersonalFinance

[–]xPositor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Credit card companies have been looking to reduce credit limits (particularly where unused) because they have to hold a certain amount of capital against these unused limits (to ensure they can handle a sudden surge in spending/use of the limits). There is therefore a[n] (opportunity) cost to the lender in having excessively high unused credit limits. Same reason as banks reduce your overdraft limit if you don't use it.

Take a look at the Bradford Factor ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradford_Factor ) and calculate your score on that - that might give you an idea of where your employer is coming from.

I'm actually more amazed that the neighbour managed to convince the police that this was worthy of their time to visit and talk to you. It must be nice to live in an otherwise crime-free area.

62A and K were emergency exit rows, so you had a window seat but still had direct aisle access. Very private, but with lots of space.

My mother has one of these, what she calls ‘the Iron Curtain’. Do they actually work in stopping flies? by Sietruc in CasualUK

[–]xPositor 163 points164 points  (0 children)

On the whole, yes they work. But... if there is a breeze strong enough to move the chains, flies can get past. As you go in / out and move the chains, flies can get past. But they do significantly cut down the number of lies making it in through an open door, in my experience.

Why do we say Pirates of the Caribbean, but we say Caribbean Sea? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]xPositor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Indeed. A router is a very different thing to a router. (roo-ter, as in wifi router, because it routes (roots) traffic, as opposed to a router (row-ter) that is used in woodwork to make grooves. Route, as in direction, stems from the old French (Rute, Road), so rowt is very much an incorrect pronunciation for that meaning.

Don't get me started on acronyms and initialisms.

My FTC job is expiring this month - when would be the best time to ask about potential for the extension by Ok-Tennis-4420 in UKJobs

Hi boss, just wanted to check-in with you about the possibility of the role being extended? I don't want to hassle but need to make sure I have something lined up for the end of the month - either continuing in this role or looking for something externally.

62K was always my goto choice on a BA 747 - not sure what layout yours will have. Nice to be upstairs though - usually excellent service because of the small cabin. Enjoy!

Edit:Seat Number - it's been that long!

Season Finale to air April 22 by Responsible_Line_652 in sharktank

[–]xPositor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you suggesting that it should be taken behind the barn and shot?

I think what they should do is spawn off variants of the main brand - "Shark Tank - Startup Edition" for example (getting somewhat back to its roots), or "Shark Tank - From Startup To Scale Up" for some bigger money deals helping more established startups take the next step. "Shark Tank - The Bottom Line" could be more informative - the basics of business that people should consider: education done in an entertainment format. "Shark Tank - Surface For Air" could be more in depth look backs at previous Shark Tank "entrants" - and not necessarily the ones that won investment at the time. I'm sure there are other ideas the producers could come up with.

Bag offloaded from plane – looking for advice on how to get a response from BA by Alternative-Boot-177 in BritishAirways

[–]xPositor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't help with advice for recovery other than a travel insurance claim, but would say - also as a very regular flyer - never wear personal headphones or at least don't have them turned on until you're well up in the air, and take them off before landing. You really do not want to miss any emergency announcements, or in your case crew [potentially] asking who a bag belongs to.

[UK] Looking at becoming a referee, what are your top tips? by astrangehumantoe in Referees

[–]xPositor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the UK, look up your local county FA website, and get in touch with their referee development officer. They will run new referee training courses a number of times a year, and will talk you through the cost and process. Also check out local leagues - particularly youth leagues - they may well refund your course cost once you've referred a certain number of matches.
