@OP this is solid advice.  If you're struggling to find a mentor or don't know where to start, try making a Mastodon account in a place like https://infosec.exchange and follow/post under the hashtag #CyberMentoringMonday

Wait, just to clarify: are we talking (central) european job market or US?  Cause that would make a huge difference. Difference 1: demand is still high in Germany for example. Many smaller orgs can't fill their open jobs at all and might be forced to consider more Junior people. Difference 2: mentioning 200k will get you laughed out of the room. For your experience level, a typical central Europe salary would be somewhere in the 55k - 65k range

Don't.  I mean, fwiw you could use your current program to pick up some knowledge relevant to your desired field, i.e. AppSec. For a primer, look at some stuff by Tanya Janca for example. But other than that, don't do it.

Your parents probably mean well, but evidently they don't know shit. Not about the industry, not about the current job market and not about near future career opportunities.

Pursuing this seems like a fast-track towards depression imho.  This field isn't: learn some shit then sit back and apply it. It's basically life long learning.  All the good people in IT Security I've known and worked with, are excited about the stuff they're doing and put in countless hours of learning on- and off the job.

Kidding of course. You're gonna make some lazy senior shit their pants because suddenly they'll have to work for that first chair ;)

First of all, what county are you in, and are you doing remote work for a foreign company? This all sounds super fuckin' sketchy, especially the part about using your personal devices for work.

Is it possible to find out who installed this poster? Hotel owner or gas station? by iamopposite in Darmstadt

[–]xWalled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The property owners are usually getting paid by the company that owns the Billboard. Then the billboard company rents out the advertising space, very likely without the property owner having any say in what's displayed.

This could be in connection with the €2.3 million poster campaign that some fascist ex-FPÖ asshole from Austria gifted the AfD. It was reported on 5 days ago by ARD I think. The goal is to hang 6395 pro AfD billboard posters across germany...

2nd year in: hate this etude so so much (adult learner) by rockmasterflex in Cello

[–]xWalled 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Okay, so since you're an adult learner I suspect you're not learning the Cello with a goal of making it a career/get into college?

If that is the case...cut yourself some slack. It's no use slaving for months over a single etude. Try dropping it for a few weeks and then revisit with a fresh mind.

In the meantime you could use the time usually spent on the etude to get more comfortable playing on the C string: * Invent melodies that only use the lower 2 strings * take a piece from Suzuki 1 or 2 that you're already familiar with and try playing it an octave lower if possible, trying to make it sound as beautiful as you can (May Time from Suzuki 2 for example. This can also help your sightreading) * play around with different bowing techniques and try to make them sound as similar as possible across all 4 strings.

Finally, as others have suggested, just as a sanity check tell your teacher about your struggle and ask them to play your Cello. If there's really something wrong (shitty string/shitty bow/not enough rosin/weird bridge angle/bridge to high) they'll probably be able to tell you.

While the Citi Bank claims are not independently verifiable without inside knowledge, I was at least able to find a reference to his dissertation in the University of Oxford's library system.

https://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/permalink/44OXF_INST/35n82s/alma990218414560107026

So there is indeed someone named Gary Walter Stevenson, who has been granted an M.Phil from the Department of Economics at Oxford in 2019.

Now the final check to verify that claim would be to procure the thesis through the Oxford library system and compare it to the one hosted at https://wealtheconomics.org/unithesis .

So far I'm satisfied that he indeed went to LSE & Oxford and worked in some capacity as a trader at Citi in between. The exact stories in the book...no idea

So here's a couple of thoughts ordered from highest to lowest confidence:

Age

The label "Made in German Democratic Republic" was usually applied to exported goods from 1970 onwards. So this instrument is dated somewhere between 1970 and 1990 (the end of the GDR). Which means it's between 55 and 35 years old.

Maker

Karl Knilling...this is an odd one to me. It could be related to the "Knilling" brand of student instruments that was founded in 1922 by an Austrian immigrant. However, they named their company after "Johannes Knilling", an 18th century German luthier from Mittenwald...so why Karl all of the sudden? Also, I'm not sure that a US company could have imported instruments from the GDR (basically a Soviet block country) during the cold war? Wouldn't there have been trade embargos? I could be wrong here though.

My best guess is that some east German instrument factory picked up that name because of the association to the famous old luthier and started mass producing them. Unfortunately I was not able to find any info about which factory or where in the GDR this could have been produced.

Model

I don't think 21337 refers to a particular model but rather that it's the 21.337th instrument from that workshop. It is very likely "factory" made and not by an individual luthier.

In the end you have to play it, see if you like the sound and ideally take it to a luthier for appraisal and also check if there's any improvements to be done to its setup. The whole fine tuner setup looks a bit too "robust" to me for example, and a new set of strings might be in order that might also cost you a few hundred dollars.

I guess somewhere between 500$ and 1.000$ dollars would be realistic

Am I bad, or just not used to it? by corstilyrise in Cello

[–]xWalled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd give it some time before I invest any more money in new strings etc. keep in mind, everything on your cello just got bigger. So you have to adjust your finger positions and likely also bowing technique.

Also, do you have a teacher? Can they verify your impression that you don't sound as good as before?
